No offense but why would anyone bother posting a team with a guy like Heath Scotland on the bench? We all know very well that Heath is one of the first picked every week.

Cause our young guys are automatic superstars that have already overtaken him...lol

No offence taken. I think it's an indication of how the team is starting to develop and the pace and height of some of our youngsters. Robinson is the one that I am taking a gamble on. From the training reports he's been tearing it up runs straight at the ball and has pace. Most coaches introduce kids into the AFL through a role down back and there is no set incumbent for the back pocket and once in the team it sounds like he is going to be hard to displace.

I tossed up between Stevens and Scotland for HBF and went with Stevens. Then when I looked at the squad I didn't think Scotland was quick enough for the back pocket and couldn't play him as a forward in front of Houlihan Betts Yarran or Fisher so he was on the bench. When I looked at the players on the bench I chose Russell for the run with tagging role which seems to be his position. It's was a toss up between Scottland and Hadley to pinch hit in the centre and on ball clearing it out of the congestion. This year I think it might be Hadley. Grigg is taller faster and more versatile. Fisher got the nod as he can pinch hit as a key forward option.

My guess for round 1 of the season proper:

FB: Armfield Jamison Thornton
HB: Gibbs Waite Bower
C: Scotland Stevens Simpson
HF: Walker Kruezer Grigg
FF: Betts Fevola Yarran
R: Hampson Judd Murphy

Int: Cloke Carrazzo Houlihan Johnson

EMG: Anderson Browne Robinson Hadley

Robinson and Hadley could easily slide into the team to replace a couple of names. The NAB cup will help with sorting out a few of the form players. Waite still has to slot in at CHB due to his physical presence and aerial ability, and the MC seems to have the same line of thinking based on recent reports.

Here I was thinking Santy was the only one with the serious uphill battle at the moment; Fisher is officially in strife with Robinson's intra-match form.

One injury and the ruck line-up becomes set in stone, which is a bit disappointing. If Jacobs doesn't develop we will need another big man.

Has there been talk that Stevo will play as a half back this year or is this just personal opinion?
I think his foot skills would be great coming from back there but not sure about his accountability and general defensive skills.

Refer to training reports from Dr Sherrin and CJ69. One of them referred to a drill where it seemed as though he was training in that position. IIRC the drill was focussed on penetrating a flooded backline in the kick ins and Johnson and Stevens featured in the back half. Stevens' ability to pinpoint passes upfield from defense looked good.

B: Bret Thornton, Michael Jamison, Andrew Carrazzo

HB: Heath Scotland, Paul Bower, Shaun Grigg

C: Bryce Gibbs, Nick Stevens, Kade Simpson

HF: Brad Fisher, Jarrad Waite, Andrew Walker

F: Eddie Betts, Brendan Fevola, Cameron Cloke

R: Robbie Warnock, Chris Judd, Marc Murphy

I: Matthew Kreuzer, Chris Yarran, Ryan Houlihan, Simon Wiggins

E: Chris Johnson, Mitch Robinson, Jordan Bannister

*Waite has to play forward, he is a very ordinary defender. Also makes forward line look stronger.
*Midfield awesome.
*Versatile team with plenty of players who can play in multiple positions.

Yep this side looks pretty good.
However I think Scotland will probably return when fit (ahead of Johnson) and Stevens is best placed on the HB line.
There is plenty of depth with the likes of Browne, Warnock, Austin, Armfield, Fisher, Carazzo, Anderson etc pressing for selection.

I am not sure i agree with everyones thought's on Steven's in the backline. Being responsable for an opponent has never been a strong part of Steven's game. Player's who use the ball well(like Houlahan and Steven's) need to be forward of the centre. When the real stuff starts, he will be back in the middle!!!!!!!

We need Stevens in a Luke Hodge type role and the new recuit Chris Johnson with his kicking accuracy in the Brent Guerra type role. Also it would be good if Waite was to play similar to Richo...I think he should play wing and go back/forward when required.

One of Hadley and Banister (injury free) must also be in the 22 to block for our midfielders (Tyson Steingline role).

Nearly there for CJ, but can see Carrots and Scotland in for Johnson and Russell.

Carrots, 2007 B&F winner, 4th last year, leadership grp - just can't see Johnson displacing him at the minute. We'll know more about Johnson v Dawks next week. Alot more. Handy back up and liked what I saw the other night.

Scotland and Carrots both way ahead of JR, think Robbo/Wiggo to do JR's role in our best 22. Still, he's another handy back up.

- I'm a big believer in giving the opposition what they would fear the most or what they would like least. For that very reason Waite would line up in my Fwd line instead of back!! 3 talls in defence is enough for mine... play Waitey where he is most dangerous and where he's most needed

- Whenever I look at someone's best 22 the first thing I check is whether a tagger has lined up in the midfield (most dont include one). A tagger is an absolute must in finals footy so I have Walks as my nominated run-with type player in my best 22. Reckon he'll be a gun in that role!

- no room for Carrazzo, Russell or Wiggins in my best 26 *puts on bullet proof vest*
