I would personally have to say (Tree trunks - Big Nick ), then Jezza then Kernahan - Have spent some time with Bruce McMaster Smith who is still a gentleman of the game and a great bloke. He used to say that when big Nick went in all you heard was bones cracking around him! :banghead:

My avatar is the one !

Stephen Kernahan.

Premiership Captain, Club President & Glenelg Number 1 ticket holder...

Anyone they get Bruce Doull to speak to and tell 'em to join Carlton must be good....

The reason why I love the Blues !!

This has been done to death.
At least the new title provided the opportunity for some good one liners.

If we're talking just names, the silvagnis would have to be right up there.....what with the old man, SOS and soon to have a few new ones join the list.

bondiblue has it nailed BIG Nick all the way. Did not play for Brownlow votes though.

The thing with Carlton is that there's no ONE player who stands head and shoulders above the rest. When one club contributes 20% of the AFL's Team of the Century, it's clear that there's been many of the very biggest names with us over the years.

How can you rank Jezza, Nicholls, Doull, Silvagni, Kernahan 1,2,3,4,5... crazy stuff.

And those five are just from the last thirty to forty years...

True

But if I was forced to do so....I came up with Big John Nichols, but I have to say I was a bigger Jezza fan growing up...he was the showman, Big Nick was the engine (and enforcer; you always need a bit of that toughness in a team).

I think Carlton walked taller with Big Nick in the team moreso than any other player I can think of.

Not too long ago Elliot was a huge name and a lot of opposition supporters hated us because of Big Jack.

More recently Pratt has been a big name.

But no name is bigger than Kernahan.

Bondi, Graeme and others on the money.

1. Nicholls.

Daylight the rest.

And that's saying something, when you consider who the rest are.

I never saw Big Nick play. I started going in 1975, he'd just finished. But I've spoken to my dad about him alot. My dad is a very level headed supporter, and has been going since the early 40s. He watched the 1945 grand final from the police horse enclosure! Anyway...the way dad describes Nicholls, his impact on the Club, on those around him, on players, the opposition, on everyone, was immense. He reckons easily the greatest captain he ever saw. No coincidence that Carlton's golden age dawned when Nick was in his prime.

It's easy for us to get caught up by those we actually saw. For me, it was Doull, Jezza, Kernahan, Silvagni and Williams...the best I ever saw. But when you talk to someone who saw them all (well, post 1940 anyway), most of them are in agreement - Nicholls.

I've been watching the Blues since 1968, so I've seen all those you mention, and truly there was something special about Big Nick's presence on the field that gave us strength of character...I haven't seen that since.

When other teams shat themselves with Carl Ditterich, we didn't, we had Big Nick. The same goes when I think about all those thugs we faced from Richmond, Essendon*, and yeah South Melbourne. The other teams didn't have enforcers like ours...Tuddenham was just a king hit man.

I saw the vast majority of Big Nick's career, and with due respect to all the others mentioned,
nobody comes close to old ''crystal eyes.''
This man had ''presence'', to a certain extent he was Carlton !!
The enforcer tag is somewhat overplayed because what shouldn't be overlooked is that he was
a highly skilled champion in almost every facet of the game.
One of the few players I've seen who had a genuine aura about him.

When he walked past me along the boundary line after the last game at Princes Park, the hair on the back
my neck stood on end.

He was my hero as a kid, and if honest I'd say he still is.

Ron Barrassi
George Harris
Alex Jesaulenko
Stephen Kernahan
and very soon Chris Judd and Bryce Gibbs

If The Blues happen to win a flag under Brett Ratten, he'd certainly be pushing for Top 5 . Greg Swann might be up there too some day if we win a flag under his reign.

At the after-party for the last game @ PP, I stood next to Big Nick and despite my never having seen the great man play, I can vouch for his presence. I was very inebriated when I asked for some photos with him; however, those "crystal eyes" were coldly and firmly fixed on me and I stood to attention! We both stand at roughly the same height and I have seldom felt so chastened as I did. Shows how much "pull" he has, even now.

Another story I heard recently was that he pulled a very drunk and reckless B Fevola into line after few rather intemperate remarks directed at the MC during the B&F in 2005- Fevvy listened hard and credited big Nick for changing his attitude and form during the 2006 season.
