Blues will defend 'tempo'

Quote:
FACED with supporter criticism for using "tempo" football during its loss to Geelong, Carlton has mounted a spirited defence of the keepings-off tactics it employed before half-time on Saturday night.

I thought the booing was from the Geelong fans.

Anyway, if it helps us win, I'll take it.

It doesnt help you win... what it does do is it hides your deficiencies for 6 minutes..... confuses you and then youre going backwards...

Absolute horrible football.

What I hate about soccer- kicking the ball backwards, uncontested football.
What I hate about rugby- stop-start "stacks on the mill" scrums.

Now these are features of our game!

What happened to contested football, high marks, individual contests, ruck work?
Features that made our game different.

Coaches and (umpiring) are ruining our great game, turning the game into copies of other codes.( soccer, rugby, irish)

Thanks Kevin, your lasting legacy.

It wasnt so much that it was hard to watch... and it made you cringe....

but...... it was without purpose and point...

the players wernt too sure where it all was heading so they wernt heading anywhere.... if youre going to snuff the clock just so you dont have to block.. tackle.. and move the ball with purpose..
.....you are truly struggling Ratts...!!!!..

We got a goal on the end of it.. lucky... it could have gone either way...cos the players didnt know what they were doing.....

... and then we got thumped!!!......... but what did the players actually learn from it???... thats it is easier to do circle work than real work????

For mine it wasn't hard to watch and it didn't make me cringe. The Cats were surging and a bit of hold-on football to slow it down made sense. The fact we got a goal out of it is irrelevant (wasn't that just a holding on to Ling, who holds 100% of the time so who cares?), but any tactic to hold the fort whilst you're under siege is acceptable in my view.

Alot of teams do it, and we've hated it when other teams do it to us because you know you can't get the ball off them. A Swans game at TD a few years ago, where Bentick won votes and Saddington's first game (he kicked a goal in our surge?) showed Sydney knew how to use it. And they won the game.

I disagree that you aren't learning anything by trying it. Younger players are learning a tactic to hold on to the ball and that sometimes its good to slow (sometimes its good to speed up). In the end if we had a better structured forward line or better marking targets (or even better teamwork, to pick up on other threads) we may have been able to advance in say minute 2...or minute 3.... but we don't, and we didn't.

I'm an unabashed baby steps fan and I think we're still making them. What is more disappointing to me is the lack of run but maybe there is some team transition still to take place over the next few years, with Anderson, Armfield and Browne formally replacing Russell and other erstwhile defenders in terms of setting up other forms of forward entry.

C'mon mate, seriously. You of all people should know the benefits of tempo footy, surely.

The issue isn't with the style of football. It's about negating the opposition when they start to gain momentum - something that unfortunately quite a few teams manage to do against us. It isn't necessarily about 'snuffing the clock' (man - that sounds dirty... lol) - and more about slowing down the pace, letting the team catch their breath and thoughts, not giving the opposition the chance to boot another 3-4 goals (which is more than capable with a team the the Cats) while our young guys are struggling.

The issues are when to use it, and how effectively you use it. There's no good playing this style of football at all if your foot skills are crap, and although we aren't the slickest team out there I'm just glad that Carlton sides of 2-3 years ago didn't play tempo football as much as we have this season - if you look at times we did in the past, sloppy possession and turnovers basically forfeited the benefits of tempo football.

Simply out, tempo football used correctly can have it's advantages - but unless you are very good at it, you run the risk of oppositions kicking goals on you - effectively while you are not attacking at all and therefore no chance of scoring.

The team hasn't screwed up with it too many times this year, in fact - I think we used it against both Collingwood and more importantly West Coast to good effect.

Don't get me wrong, it's ugly and I hate it (especially in the dying minutes of the last quarter, our team or someone else!) - but it does have it's uses.

Youngest team in the AFL, versus the reigning Premiers, who at the time were on a roll.

I don't have a problem with the tempo footy. All clubs do it, and for obvious reasons we need to do it.

It stopped an avalanche of goals so it was worthwhile. Or would you prefer Geelong to have been 10 gls up at half time?

The fact Geelong hammered us in the 3rd Qtr is irrelevant, they were just too good. But at least we stopped them hammering us in the 2nd Qtr.

It's sheer madness to expect the youngest side in the AFL to match a team like Geelong.

Young side needs to learn defense as well as attack, and needs to learn how to stem the flow of gls the other way.

Agree with the point..'making baby steps..armfie,joey.ect replacing russel..' on the money with this point.

Finally we are re-stocking the yard with hard running players who wont take a backward step and have some creative flair about them!

It hit the point completely - Stop Geelong from kicking another goal before the end of the quarter that's the purpose of it.

Modern football is played at tempo. We have to learn how to do it. I think it is great that we momentarily halted their momentum and scored a goal. Good for the team and where this club is going in the modern game. If it was the 1980's then I'd complain... but it isn't, so the tempo style was good and I hope we maintain it where necessary.

If you criticise it you don't understand it.

So going by that rationale, my criticism of the Bush Government's foreign policy was in fact internally driven, because I just did not understand it.

Conundrum

We used tempo footy beautifully against Collingwood to
1Protect the LEAD we had
2 We did for the last 2 minutes or so of the quarters not at the 20 minute mark

This is planB if plan A doesnt work which is moving the ball from the backline with hand and foot.

the chip shit should be plan C

We dont have the cattle to exexcute breaking zones because are foot skills and smarts and run are not good enough

That was a joke on Sat
We were 19 points down

It reminded me of a boxer about to get knocked out.
The knockout punch occured in the third because Geelong knew it was all over at the half. So did we.

W should have lost that game by 100 points if geelong kicked straight
Straight kicking for goal by us helped as well.

38 shots to 17 is a more accurate summation of the game not the 57 point margin.

We must recruit skilled players in the next 2 drafts because I reckon we havent improved that much.

No Conundrum. The subject is tempo footy and the comment pertains specifically to the topic being discussed, nothing more.

Keogh if it was in the last quarter I would agree with you that it would be a joke however we were approaching half time and they did not want the lead to blow out.

By the way who started the Tempo on Saturday night, it was the captain so he must of felt being out there and not in the stand that we had to slow the game up or we could be going into half time 6-7 goals down.

Club doesn't need to justify it...

Gee short memories, inability to do this is why we lost the Bombers game...

Previous years we didn't have the skill to do this..

Either way I see it as improvement
