I hope he's umpiring the game when Fevola kicks his 100th in a year. Cause when i jump the fence, i'm running straight to Ray to 'Celebrate' with him.

A blight on the game, when he goes out there, its all about him.

But of course, any criticism from the people who matter will just be swept under the carpet by the communist AFL, so were stuck with Gay Chamberlain for now

Generally I'm not anti-umpire...but they're on a lot of money doing what they do and unlike players - have the opportunity to have a full-time job as well. They make mistakes, just like the players - although next week they might be enemy number 1 - whereas if Chris Judd has a shocker next week - he'll still be one of the best players in the competition...so it's a tough gig...but they're well compensated.

Last night however I tuned in to a bit of pre-game Triple M radio talk while I sat at the game in the AFL members. I spotted Michael Roberts (MMM boundary commentator) and little Ray speaking. That's nice I thought - but then Robbo comes on the radio and says - 'Umpire Ray Chamberlain has come over for a chat and he wants everyone to know that his fellow umpire Luke Ryan (#4) is wearing girls shoes tonight'. The boys in the box had a bit of a laugh. I shook my head in disgust. This bloke brings it all on himself. By doing stuff like this - he's wanting to become part of the action...and the game was 10 minutes from starting.

When he came back to the AFL members side of the ground in the third quarter - the crowd gave it to him big time. I'm sure all he would have heard was noise...but he deserved all he got. His umpiring was woeful. Unbelievably Bryce Gibbs chopped across the shoulder of Rhan Hooper seconds later. He tentatively called 'Play On' on what was a clear Lions free...Ray just shit himself. On that - and that alone - he won't get a final.

Agree Dr. Geishen needs to tell him to cut out the self promotion and just concentrate/improve on his umpiring. He`s not going to get paid anymore for being a "personality".

The umpiring is getting worse, and less consistent.

There is only one person to blame.

Gieschen.

Failure.

yep

syd v Essendon* game

-ball out of bounds in the direction of a runner - runner goes to stop it with his boot - it goes off his foot into the crowd - 50m penalty

-man on the mark - umpire yells out 'move it on' - defensive player goes over the mark to tackle the player with the ball - umpire blows whistle - 50 metre penalty and goal - umpire says ' i said move it on - not play on'

WTF !?!?

where has common sense gone

the maggotts think people go to watch them - it is a disgrace

the AFL is quickly being shown up as an amateur organisation and footy is becoming extremely hard and frustrating to watch

If you look at games from say the 80s and 90s, the umpires were invisible. You would hardly know they were there. They blew the whistle ran in bounced and moved away. Now it's like a whole production for them to pay a free kick.

Simmo last night gave away a 50 metre penalty for touching, yes touching not holding a man after he took a mark and he only touched him because he slipped on the turf. Then later Fev takes a mark on the 50 and Merrett falls on him after the mark with knee in the back and nothing.

And don't get me started on the holding the ball rule and illegal disposal.

They are an overpaid protected species.

Also in the Hun today an article said the players from the Hall of Fame game last week donated their match payment of $5K to charity. The Umpires did not feel as generous and pocketed their fee.

I want to know what dirt Gieschen has on The Spew to keep him in the job.

Jeff Gieschen: Dud player, dud coach, dud head of umpires.

Sack him!

Chamberlain copped some sensational abuse - sustained for well over 2 minutes - from a bloke in the Social Club last night.

Some of the best uses of a hyphen you'll ever hear.

And Ray heard them. He definitely heard them.

Should give him #32 NOW.

not just chamberlin

but the numpty in the No 25 is also a huge concerns. we have had a him a few times now, and he seriously smashes us every time.

i go and watch footy, very rarely to do i get upset with players, from either side (expcetion being Monga, i always give it t him)

but, i lose my mind at umpires, they just infuriate me at times.

they are just so inconsitent, make decisions and get involved, when it isnt necessary.

they shouldnt be mic
they shouldnt be in the program
they shouldnt be put on the big screen
they shouldnt be talked to by radio personalities

for too long the AFL has pushed for them to be part of the game, and whilst they are indeed a very important part of the game, the less involvment they have in a game the better.

umpire standards, get worse and worse with every game

People go to watch the players. Umpires should not be seen and only rarely heard.

Interesting the comments about umpires years ago. Watch the 79 GF and see how many tiggy touchwood frees there are. I'd swear Billy Picken gets a dozen. YET, you don't notice the umpires and players just got on with it no matter how bad the decision was.

The 50 metre penalty for stepping one inch over the mark has got to go.

I watched Geelong vs Richmond and the Geelong bloke didn't step over the mark at all, but because he didn't turn around and have a conversation with the umpire - 50 metre penalty.

It isn't common sense stuff. Ok if he holds onto the bloke for ages -give the penalty. That is the only instance for a 50 metre penalty.

If anything, I would like to see players stand on the mark more these days instead of 3 metres behind the mark.

And also if someone takes a mark near the boundary line...stand on that mark as a defender, don't wheel around as if the forward is going to go off the mark. Make the angle more difficult for him as they steal a metre or two in angle when they do that. A teammate should cover the run in.

I was completly befuddled by the umpiring on Saturday night.

But then I am befuddled most of the time.

Their is no doubt that the torch of the "Torching Carlton Umpires" has been passed:

- Ian Robinson
- Peter Cameron
- Darren Goldspink
- Ray Chamberlain

Peter Cameron will never be surpassed. His screwing of us was legendary.

I remember one day at PP - the umps had to walk past the cheer squad about ten minutes before the end of the ressies to go to the Carlton rooms. We gave him an earfull, as you do. The result? Not one free kick to us for the entire first 1/4.

He was a bastard.
