Just doing the post Xmas clean up & came accross some old things from my teens, notes , scores , goalkickers etc .I had written while listening to the The Blues on the radio in the 70"s . It provoked the thought , which player/s landed on the scene , made a splash , were there for a few seasons but unfortunately just didnt finish it of. Player that came to mind was Rod Galt , I seem to remember two 6 goal bags in a row & thinking here we go this could be special , but just didnt continue on. Any other favorites out there?

The Buzz would almost have to be the player who made the biggest impact, in the shortest amount of time.

Warren Ralph comes to mind. I remember him kicking 9 on debut against North at Waverley in Rd 1 '84. Fraser Murphy and David Honeybun debuted that day too, and we smashed 'em by 100+ points. He hung around until the end of '86, but didn't achieve much else (except for famously missing a shot on goal after the siren against the Pies ). He went back to WA and I think I'm right in saying he won the lotto!?

I also remember there being a lot of excitement about Alan Thorpe when he booted 7 goals against the Tigers in a pre-season game in '95....I left Waverley that February night proclaiming Thorpey as the "saviour".......and, um, yeah, I don't think he ever played a senior game for us...

Greg Towns was so dominant playing in the centre for us in his first year of 1974; that he was leading every Media Award halfway through the season; and was red hot favourite for the Brownlow.

However.....that brilliant form faded; and after 87 games over 6 years; he was delisted and picked up by Footscray, where he played a further 23 games.

Tommy Alvin too.

Checked the bible and Wayne Blackwell also debuted that day.

Wayne Blackwell was a fantastic player. Unlucky not to have played in a premiership. Unfortunately for us, I think the apple might have fallen slightly further from the tree than we hoped

Peter McKenna and Billy Barrot both played some great games for Carlton....especially at PP.....Barassi has always said that Billy Barrott won 2 games for us almost singlehandedly.

McKenna kicked 36 goals in just 11 games; although past his prime.

Ditto Barry Mitchell.

Two that I would list...

1. Stephen Oliver. THAT game against West Coast where he looked like he could have been anything. He probably had the whole kitbag, but AFL footy wasn't his scene.
2. Ron DeIulio. A little harsh here given the number of games he played, but does anyone remember that first half of the season in 1992? Looked an absolute GUN! He ended up playing fair footy for us, but never to the extent that those first few games suggested.

Two favorites of mine growing up were Ross Ditchburn and Richard Dennis.Both had great seasons in premiership years but didn`t last too long.Was a big Mark Naley fan also.

Damien Lock looked a future star one preseason.

Sean Charles was BOG in an intra Club match preseason at PP before he broke his leg and never played again.

Mark Majerczak looked a class act in the Reserves but didn't kick on.

Agreed. Ronnie was touted as the next Johnno (a tad optimistic!) in early '92 - ie. former VFA player, explosive half forward etc... He ended up having a reasonable career, but it was nowhere near the early expectations...

And I still have a pang of sorrow when I think of how good Oliver could have been if he'd wanted us as much as we wanted him ...He touched up Jackovich in that game, when Jackovich was in his prime!

Peter Motley really got my interest. He was our James Hird. He moved magnificently and exuded class.

Rod Galt was a very handy player for Carlton after coming across from St Kilda he and Peter Brown at Full Forward had a good understanding between them with both of them were kicking lots of goals, but unfortunately the Players Association had just been formed and by memory Rod Galt became their secretary and it did not go to well with the VFL and Carlton after he published some sort of a cartoon which offended the VFL and then he lost al his good form all of a sudden, strangely enough Peter Brown also lost his brilliant form after Galt departed and was cleared to St Kilda a year later.

Same year Rohan Welsh looked the goods too. Both he and Ronnie had magnificent starts to their careers.

And then there's Lance Whitnall's first game - I thought we had the next Kernahan, but fours years younger than when we got the original.

Tony Southcombe was a cult figure if ever there was one.
Red hair, big 70s style sidies, played with his glasses on and looked like Graeme Garden from The Goodies.
He came down from Bendigo as a mature age recruit - played 13 games and kicked 11 goals in 1977 and was gone again.
