Seriously, we need to get someone like Rod Ashman to take the kids under his wing and teach them some things about both life and footy.

I also like what Thompson did at Geelong by installing someone (an outside consultant perhaps) to teach leadership skills to their senior players. This could be just what our future leaders (Murhp, Gibbs, K-Dog, Waite, Fish, Walker etc) will need to help them take that next step.

There was an article in one of the weekend papers in the last month about the consultants in footy clubs. I was surprised to see that Carlton was one of the teams that had apparently been using the same company for a couple of years now. One of the main ppl in that business was a certain man named Hotton...

Something, that if true, has been kept pretty quiet around these parts is Carlton's interest in recruiting Nathan Buckley as an assistant coach in 2008, as revealed by Gerard Healy on last night's episode of On the couch. Eddie was the guest and he was visibly taken aback when Healy made the comment. You could almost see his sphincter tighten up. McGuire then went on a bit of a rant and rave about not wanting Buckley to learn bad habits at any other clubs and he would be advising Buckley to attend coaching courses overseas, or going to Beijing as part of our Olympic coaching team...

Really? That's very close minded of him. I thought eddie was speaking of that for other reasons eg seeing how the bigger name clubs do it o/s and business backrounds...Not for a small minded reason like 'bad habits at other clubs'...that's ridiculous. If anything he'd learn more (both what to do and what not to do) from other clubs, as Collinwood haven't actually won that many flags recently...and he picked up his current coach from another club, not an MBA grad from Harrvaarrd...

Yeah, it was the usual self-promoting crap we've come to expect from Eddie. :garthp:

Remember that most of us aren't as clued in on the character of coaching prospects as those in the industry.

The following are examples from Andrew Rule's article - http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/footys-finest--young-rich-and-out-of-it/2007/03/10/1173478727321.html?page=fullpage:

Angwin's point is backed by a former AFL coach of impeccable character and high standing. He tells the story of a Crows star (with reputed shady connections) taking a fishing tackle box on a team trip. Inside were not hooks and sinkers, just dozens of brightly coloured pills. Drugs.

Quote:
One of the Blues' great finals players reputedly played under the influence of drugs — "his eyes would be rolling around like mad", recalls a contemporary — and later became a dealer among younger players. He saw a Carlton player at a nightclub during the finals in the late 1990s and, while commiserating with him for being dropped from the side, slipped the embarrassed player some drugs. He is still reputed to deal to players and is not the only one.

But it's hard for some to go back after walking the wild side. One All-Australian player who made too much of his days in the sun boasted to a club official: "You haven't lived until you've had (a beauty queen) snort coke off your d---."

He's a classic Eddie, it's all about him and by extention Collingwood. Healy suggested that Tony Shaw's decision to stay and not become an assistant at another club, may have been part of his problem. Eddie's response was to say that's way in the past and not relevant. Reading between the lines Buckley is Malthouses successor in McGuire's eye's and he doesn't want to lose him to another club. I think Healy is right he's heading down the Shaw road to failure, if he stays at Collingwood and doesn't go outside to see how it could be done elsewhere. If he's serious it's interstate to West Coast, Sydney or Adelaide to see the new way of doing things that has bough success in recent years.

A former premiership player like Montgomery would be a good get and bring alot to Carlton having played under Williams, Eade and Wallace.

Peter Jonas

not sure if we still have a slot available with rumours of Buckley, Laidley and now Montgomery but Peter Jonas might be worth looking at .... why...he has been at Central Districts on and off for over 10 years (i think) and Central District are about to play in their 8th straight GF. Pretty amazing when you consider they have never in their history made one until that point

if anyone is interested in a good book 'any give team' is highly recommended, as per the article in the age re performance improvement consultants who recently worked with Geelong and helped them, the first place they ever did their work was at Central Districts and they have delivered sustained success - 8 GFs

Peter Jonas was there at the begining when the club started to turn it around - has spent time at (Port Adel I think) and is now back at Central

anyone thought I would through an interesting name into the mix .. 8 GF would be nice for CFC :)

Peter Jonas hasn't been at Centrals for about 5 years.

But seriously, I have always been a huge wrap for him. He started Centrals on their incredible run, worked as development coach at the Swans, and is now in charge of the Crows midfield IIRC. A few years ago I was really keen on him to for Carlton senior coach, but I don't think he would leave Adelaide now, seeing as he would be a good chance for the job after Neil Craig is gone.

A good appointment, some fresh blood..........

Geeze... Carlton is going to be such a different place (for the better) next year... What a difference a great President, CEO and Footy department makes...
