A girlfriend of mine who works at the Hun has told me that the Scum are placing an ad in the paper for Sheedy's coaching milestone and in the ad there is a serious of thank yous - thanks for the 93 Granf Final, blah, blah.

One of the thank you's relates to the Carlton game of 1981 - I'm not proficient in using the Blueseum, which I will be going thru tonight and upskilling myself on this wonderful resource tool for all things Carlton, but does anyone know why Sheedy should be thanked as I cannot recall the game?

I was 3 when this game was played so I dont remember it either, but I've heard recollections of what happened over the years... apparently our boys started celebrating after we kicked our last goal and thought we had it all rapt up and took the foot off the excellerator... then the Scum made their move :(

Now I remember - the free kick against Fitzy.

Shocking decision then and now!

They obviously have soooo little to be thankful for that they will latch onto everything.

Can you imagine an ad for us if we were thanking David Parkin? :-D

I was at that game as a plucky 11 YO. I distinctly remember the incident which shattered the fans - especially as Fitzy was in the process of kicking the ball when the umpire blew the whistle.

I also remember the Blues fans booing Sheedy as he walked around the boundary. Even in his first year he was hated at PP  . Seems we were very astute judges of character.

Essendon* were flat track Home and Away bullies in those days - they usually choked at the Elimination Final stage.

In 1981 and 1982 - they were like Spike the Bulldog - big and tough on the outside but "weak and puny" in the ticker department.

A big bunch of would haves, could haves and should haves.

Fitzy held up the Premiership Cup at the end of 1981 and and Neale Daniher was on crutches.

It was the start of a 'wood' over us that continued for many years. From memory Essendon* were on an absolute roll and I think it was something like there 14th win in a row as they charged to the finals. We were on top and looked to have the game won deep in the last quarter when Fitzy got called for time wasting. Neale Danniher ended up kincking a couple in as many minutes and we lost.

We did have the last laugh though - Essendon* didn't make the finals and we won the flag. :) Good to see they are thanking Sheeds for mediocrity!!!!

- Thank you for taking Campo (or should I say 'compo'), Matthew Allan and Justin Murphy off our hands.. what recruiting masterstrokes :P
- Thank you for the look on your face after the following games:

Oh yes I remember that match very well.
Standing in front of the press box with my brother and cousin and we had a clear view of the Fitzpatrick time wasting incident.

Thanks Kevin for introducing backwards kicking.
Thanks Kevin for the intro of the 50 metre penalty for "professional fouls"
Thanks Kevin for the introduction of four on the bench and the subsequent rorting of the interchange.
Thanks Kevin for Collingwood beating you in 1990.
Thanks Kevin for the "Carlton retirement home" in Windy Hill.
Thanks Kevin, I sat behind you at the 1982 GF when we beat Richmond and we gave you heaps.
Thanks Kevin for the look on your face after the 1999 Prelim.
Thanks Kevin for Barnes your runner, becoming an extra man on the ground for you.
Thanks Kevin for being coach of Essendon* for so long, as with the sides which you had, someone else may have won more than just 4 flags in 26 years! May you stay there for many more years.

Above all thanks Kevin for bring football down to YOUR level.

Dad and myself left this game with 5 minutes or so left on the clock when it looked wrapped up. Made it back to the Kingswood in time to hear Harry B ranting about a miracle win by Essendon*. We sat there stunned for about five minutes.

I never ever leave/stop watching a game early regardless of the score.

Game had it all. A Jimmy Buckley 70 metre torpedo goal put the Blues 26 points ahead at the 20 minute mark of the last term. Instead of going in for the kill the Blues tried to slow the game down. Mike Fitzpatrick got pinged by Umpire Robinson in front of the Social Club. From the free kick Glen Hawker kicked a point. Sheedy shifted Neale Daniher into attack where he proceeded to kick three goals including the one to put them ahead by a point. Daniher was arguably the hottest player in the comp at that stage but sadly he injured his knee the following week v South Melb in what was game 66 and managed just 16 more over the next nine years.

I was at that game. It didn't really matter in the end. Fitzy was absolutely robbed .

We made up for it beating the filth in the GF when once again they thought they were home. I can still see the filth supporters crying after the game. It was one of the best sights of all time.

The scum thought they had "the best side ever" in 1999 when we fixed them up. :-D "The best side ever" won one flag in a row. Ha Ha Ha

Thanks Kevin for helping create 'journalists' who do no work because they can rely on you for a ridiculous headline

Thanks Kevin for using Richmond to prop up your salary at Essendon*

Thanks Kevin for giving us such precious football moments as when you did the 'cut the throat motion' to a WCE player who it was proven had done nothing wrong
Thanks Kevin for being able to divert attention from your inept coaching year after year by blaming it all on a single injury, eg Solomon or was it John Coleman :)

Thanks Kevin for allowing a long line of hack footballers play the game and contribute nothing but being negative eg Denham

Thanks Kevin for justifying a thug footballer who has the longest list of the worst offences, as simply being 'gangly' - Dustin Fletcher - kicking several times etc etc

and spot on bluey Carlton. Sheedy introduced backward kcikig to the detriment of the game. yet journos still are convinced he is an innovator

Thanks Kevin for

just wanted to say I am loving these 'thanks kevin' comments - but I'd like to add that today the umpire would have just called play on rather then a free kick - really shows how ripped off we were,

thanks Kevin for bagging the Melbourne Victory - a team that play a more exciting brand then the bumbers

I was there as a 15yo.
We were home and hosed.
Some fool in the social club played our song 5 mins too early.
Players started walking off until they realised it wasn't over.
Fitzy got shafted.
Some sheep farmer kicked a goal.
Shattered faces at the Healtely Stand end.

The irony is that Sheedy now says he views flooding as a cancer on the game. YOU HELPED FRICKING INVENT IT!!!

Thanks Kevin ..... if it wasn't for you in 1990 the pies would still be searching for their first premiership in 300 years (or thereabouts) !!!

  POTW!

and many of these great moments in our darkest years!

Cant let Collingwood win its only flag in 50 years of football off either!

And I was at that game in '81, Essendon* owned us around those years, Fitzy got pinged against Collingwwod the previous season for time wasting as well, the only 2 times I ever saw that free paid, we lost both games by under a goal.

Neale Dahinher was a freak that day.

We held up the cup though, so who cares!
