I still refer to Greg Williams as a "Moral Triple Brownlow Medallist" because of this travesty of justice

While the cream of the crop usually pick up the award, it SHOULD NOT BE the umpires' job to worry about who was best on ground.

The Brownlow voting process is a joke and the award is overrated.

I actually recall there was even a song written about it....the chorus went "44 possessions number 2 doesn't gaurantee you fame.....44 possession DIESEL you really have to lift your game"

I think it was by the musicmen or someone like that....

McLeod was robbed of the 2001 brownlow too. He destroyed the Kangaroos here one night late in the season gathering 35 possessions and 3 goals, his game was even greater than diesel's infamous one IMO but he got no votes either.
Don't think any umps were getting even with him as he's pretty quiet, I think they were protecting their bets.

Maybe the umps backpedalled on the 93 stuff up by helping him out a bit more in 94. Peter Matera got 27 votes & missed out by 3. That would've won in any other year :P

It's a part of folklore now that the umps simply didn't want Williams to win it, and that during that particular game when giving the votes the reaction was more or less "F*^% him!" because he was mouthing off at them all day.

Wanganeen on the other hand had won little to no other player-of-the-year awards from anyone else (Diesel won most of them, Jackovich won a couple if I remember correctly), but ran away with the umpire's choice. There was no doubt the umpires loved Wanganeen. How many frees to you think he got from arching his back and diving into the turf? Even today I have no doubt that the 93 brownlow count was pre-planned by the umps because they wanted Diesel to lose in the most painful way possible.

Losing the GF was one thing, but it was after the brownlow of 93 that I truly hated those f%^#ers from Windy Hill (and umpires too) and have done so ever since. It began what I can only describe as a single-minded attack on us from everyone for that whole week (who can forget the ad where the old man purposely destroys a record playing "We are the navy blues"?). It seemed the whole world wanted us to lose.

An absolute disgrace that robbed one of the game's greats of a rare standing in the game alongside Skilton, Bunton, Reynolds and Stewart.
