It's my belief DB the day itself, should not be a holiday as not everyone is Catholic.

If I want to take the day off to observe the religious significance of it then I will.

If we remove Good Friday as a holiday, then the whole subject becomes irrelevant and the game will become part of the normal Friday night match rather than this perceived opportunity to capitalise on the boredom that most people have with this day.

Good friday will remain as a public holiday as we live in a 'Westernised Christian' society...

But the benefits of Good Friday football are huge.

Not only will it promote the exposure of the Carlton name/brand accroass Australia, but if done correctly could be a massively positive promotion with regards to the Good Friday Appeal.

This may encourage future sponsors etc to the club.

As an evangelical Christian, I have nothing wrong with people doing things on Good Friday, including footy. Christian doctrine emphasises the power of Christ's sacrifice on the cross EVERY day - Good Friday is simply the day that he was crucified. Yes it is important, but because it is so important, I reflect on the cross every day, not just for 1 day throughout the year.

My main argument against it is that people are less likely to go because they've gone away for the long weekend. Deano, the interstate argument suits people like you and I who might do it, but most Carlton supporters live in Melbourne, that's a cold hard fact and I doubt that just because interstaters could get down there for the game that that would offset the numbers who would not go because they've gone away for the long weekend.

The other thing I'd point out, tubbs, is that in the USA, Good Friday is NOT a public holiday...

Good Friday 2008 - March 21
Good Friday 2009 - April 10
Good Friday 2010 - April 2

With 2008 out of the question, by the time this thing gets off the ground - the pre-season competition will be out the door...new format in - the AFL will never schedule Round 1 over an Easter weekend...I have my doubts.

Do I attend Church on Good Friday - yes...would I attend the Footy on Good Friday - yes. Do I think Jesus would mind that I attended the Footy on Good Friday - not at all...particularly with a great percentage of gate takings going to a very worthy cause.

It'd be contradictory of me to say 'NAY' to Good Friday professional sport. I follow the NHL almost as religiously as the AFL...and have attended games in North America on Good Friday. I'd be quite happy to attend both - I think you'd find a lot of people would do the same thing.

Umm... But if we don't play on the Friday then we'll be playing on the Saturday or the Sunday anyway Clem. It's still part of the long weekend and people who have gone away will still be away.

I'm in there like swimwear for good Friday footy!

Like bluegirldanielle said, you can always head off Sasturday Morning! (and come back Monday)

And it's using abit of forward thinking as the Blues and Hawks will be kick ass teams in the near future, just like the good old 80's 8)

The religious argument is a moot one, surely. The fact is that we're not all religious creatures, so either the holiday should go altogether, or it should be accepted that not everyone has to adhere to these 'restrictions' placed upon Good Friday by religious groups. Why should the AFL selectively kowtow to Christianity?

Denying Good Friday football on the grounds that many people are holidaying is also devoid of logic - wouldn't this argument justify the cancellation of the entire round?

Oh, and yes, I do eat red meat on Good Friday.

Good Friday wont be a success...

We are better off getting the Easter Monday holiday or Queens Birthday game...

Funny how some people cant use one day where there are no distractions to spend time at home with their families...
They feel the need to be entertained...

Now as Greek Orthodox.. its not often our Easter falls in line with the mainstream Good Friday... but i love that day catching up with people im close to..

anyway each to their own... i wouldnt go -even if it isnt my Easter...

get off your silly high horse and spend time with your own family Synners.

I spend time with mine, as others do, we all construct our lives differently - funny how some, though, always desire to tell us how we should construct them.

na just hate people who try to sound all righteous and virtuous. Honestly, you've banged on about this one before. Do you really think you need to stand up for the families of the world?

Build it and they will come.

Good Friday footy will go right off. Mark my words. I hope like hell we're on the bandwagon.

Prefer the Monday twilight - people will be better off coming back after the long weekend.

It's a moot point for next year because GF will be before Rd 1.

Our attempt to get a blockbuster needs to be at another time - anytime on the Easter weekend will be hit and miss.
