We all want 10 first round draft picks. We all want access to the best young talent in the comp. But the difference is, I think we should do it the right way. Which is the way we are doing it now. Playing a young developing team and trying to win as much as we can. That's why we got Pratt. He's a winner and won't tolerate losing. Why do you think he jumped on board this year? It's because he knew it was time to stop losing. He knew we had gathered enough talent to start turning the club around. He jumped on baord because he is a winner and he knew it was time to start winning. Comparing this year to 2004 when we won 10 and picked up Russell is ignorant. We were a completely different team then. We were made up of recycled hacks who were playing for their careers,. hence winning games that didnt truly indicate where we were heading. Every game we win now will be completely different. It will give us confidence. It will give the kids an indication of what we need to do to win. IT WILL DEVELOP THEM. Because we will be winning with our future (the kids), not with hired help.
Can't you see that having a losers mentality is sending this club backwards. And watch how much more difficult it is going to be to hang on to our players at the end of the year with the way we are going. And watch how much harder it will be to attract good players from other clubs.
As much as I would love a priority pick (because we deserve it given the last 5 years), I would much prefer to see us win 7-8 games, finish 3rd last (as we will anyway) and have pick 3 in the draft and pick up another young gun.
Let's face it, the chance of us winning only 2 more games for the year is about 20%. So the question really is ... who would rather win 5 games and have pick 3 ... Or who would rather win 6-9 games and have pick 3.
You would rather have us win 7 to 8 games and finish off with Pick 3 - rather than only winning 4 games and having Picks 1 and 4.
The players WILL hang around this year - they will not want to go no place once Round 22 is over dont worry about that.
The only players not hanging around will be those that will be delisted to make room for Picks 1, 4 and 20 etc.
nytdog - you have spent far too long in the USA.
Where in the NBA - a single first round draft pick has a 20% impact on a starting 5 in a basketball team.
Remember this a single first round draft pick in AFL only has a 6% impact on a starting 18 in a football team.
So do the maths - WE NEED PICKS 1 & 4 - not just Pick 3.
