I burned my 2005 Wizard cup Premiership poster at the end of that season.
I'm just sick of being below average.
I'd love to be as "good" as we were in one of our average seasons like say 1992 or 1985 when I considered us a joke!
Ah... to be considered a nuisance...

Yes its frustrating.

I felt like that recently too.

I went to the Carltonm website and had a look at our young players.

When you look at it, we do have enough talent there to get back to some playing finals again soon.

I choose not to think in terms of seasons but matches.

Carlton is about 40 matches away from being back to a spot in the final 8.

Interesting you should raise this - I was thinking about the night series in the 80s the other day.

From memory it was played during the week…with quite a few reserves players (?). What month during the year was it? I seem to remember even some non Vic teams participating. Can anyone remind me how the comp was structured…

cheers

It varied from year to year - but in the early 80s involved all VFL teams and some interstate sides. It was played in Tuesday nights at Waverley and ran until around June/July. Quite a few reserves players did play, as you said. The year we won (1983) it was the Sterling Cup and the Grand final, as I recall, was postponed by a week due to the condition of VFL Park. I seem to recall, re interstate sides, that one year we lost to an interstate side - I think the year was 1980 and the team South Fremantle

Thanks for that.

I had a feeling it was played on Tuesdays. So teams would play on Sat...then Tues....then Sat again!

32 cents and your a member, come on and join the Escort Club.

I remember as a kid listening to the night series (1960's). Lou Richards was one of the callers (might have been on 3DB). It was played between the 8 teams who missed out on the finals, from memory on a Tuesday/Wednesday night. The venue was the South Melbourne Lakeside Oval and the lighting was so dodgy rumour had it that if a player ran into a particularly dark pocket with Ted Whitten in tow, he more often than not didn't reappear. Great fun for a kid with the tranny under the blankets. For some reason the Hawks seemed to have a mortgage on the cup.

In hindsight I have no idea how a series among teams who missed out on the final 4 could have worked but that's my hazy memory of it.

I have a recollection of a game where a SA team tore a vic team (maybe St Kilda or Essendon*?) a new one - they had this big bastard at full forward who destroyed 'em.

Think the team may have been Norwood...
