They should fly in the morning and fly back after the game no need to sleep over. If there are no planes then Im sure Dick will fly them back with his jet. And the AFL pay for fuel :-D

First major test of this new board IMHO. If the game is moved, there will be a lot of angry CFC fans. Will be seen as more of the same, AFL telling us what to do (loss of independence due to financial position, etc).

If the game is moved, CFC should be given a massive payout (think what Melbourne/Hawthorn/Kangaroos get when they move a game interstate - something in the order of 250-300k, taking into account publicity, membership and merchandise).

Good luck Mark, and thanks for the update.

This whole thing should be put in perspective.

1. We have had NO contact from the AFL to suggest the venue is even under review. This certainly suggests that the only thing going on at the moment is a Brisbane campaign to have the game moved being played out in the media. Something this new board won't have a bar of.

2. This is not the home and away season where home teams get any share of revenue. That's why your membership doesn't get you in this week, nor through the whole NAB cup. This is an AFL run comp. FYI - we sold very few memberships at the Essendon* game, most were sold the next day at the family day, and after the Hawthorn game we sold solid numbers each day via the internet so it is debatable whether the game at TD will result in membership sales.

Ditto for merchandise sales where our share at TD is very small anyway.

3. What is not in dispute is how great it would be for our kids to play in front of a huge home crowd, and how disgusting it would be for us - the supporters, to not get the chance to see our team live.

BUT, the NAB Cup rules, venues etc have always been dictated by the AFL. That's why teams play all over the country.

AND I reiterate we have had no indication we will be asked to play elsewhere.

If that request / demand does come, it has nothing to do with the AFL loan. This is the NAB Cup.

But John M does have a point about Raheen, but not sure our President will be too keen to have a slumber party with the Brisbane boys.

And one final point.

I don't actually want this to happen but from a pure business perspective you could argue the game is worth more to us being telecast live around the country in prime time from interstate. It gives our sponsors additional exposure and ultimately the dollars clubs get from their majors is directly related to the number of times their brand is eye balled on telly. I am not sure a TD game will be live into Melbourne. And live footy rates much better than delayed footy.

I reiterate, putting aside my board responsibilities, I am a diehard traditionalist so I want to see TD packed with navy blue and I want our success starved supporters and members to have the chance to see us play. But the notion of compensation is pretty far fetched.

I'd generally agree with you IF there was decent FTA programming into Sydney and larger markets, but it looks highly unlikely that any FTA coverage into Sydney will start before 11:30pm.

Yes, Fox may be carrying it live, but remember the Pay TV penetration in Australia is still less than 30% (IIRC...I could be well wrong).

Thanks again Mark for keeping us up to date. I understand that the AFL has final say, and also that at the moment it is all speculation.

Why didn't the AFL tentatively book rooms in the hotels they usually use months ago, when there was always the possibility of this scenario?

I was thinking of merchandise in terms of sales at the store - not that hosting the Grand Final necessarily means that we will lose, but it is certainly an advantage with all of the Lions travelling in recent weeks. Things like DVD sales (I for one bought the 05 game) and other options for memorabilia pieces, etc if we win. And I think a win at home would get quite a few supporters to become members if the tents were open on the bridge after the game.

Not sure that seeing the game live on TV would persuade people to buy a membership - just as likely a pay TV subscription, seeing we will be on there most weeks.

Two options the way I see it.

1. Play the game in Melbourne.

2. Brisbane forfeit it and we'll have an intra-club.

I'm sure Brisbane would prefer option 1

the afl website has it at the DOME.

under the ticketing link for the NAB cup and challenge.

2007 NAB CUP

2007 NAB Cup Grand Final: Carlton v Brisbane; Saturday March 17, 7.10pm Melbourne, Telstra Dome

so surely the venue wont be changed.

Question for you Mark...

Is it really the AFL's call? Surely if it has a set of rules in place, it cannot simply go and change them on its own whim? It's one thing to say that it has control over venues during rounds 1 to 3, which it openly stated before the competition starts that it does. It is another thing completely to state that the final shall be played at the home venue of the club that kicks the most goals, and then decide on a whim that that rule shall no longer apply?

It seems to me that in this instance, the AFL should only be able to change the venue if it gets approval to do so from both clubs. I, for one, would like to see the Carlton board sit down and decide which venue is best in the interests of the Carlton Football Club. If that is holding it in Brisbane, fine, let the AFL change it if it wants to (although I would trust that the Board doesn't come to that 'decision' because it is the easy wayout to not rock the boat with the AFL).

If, however, it is decided that the best venue in the interestes of CFC is the Dome, then CFC should be firm that the venue will not change, and argue that the rules are there, and must be abided by. It is time that CFC was seen to be standing up to the AFL, in an appropriate manner, and appropriately asserting its rights. for the good of the Club, its members, sponsors and supporters.

As I stated from the outset, the only mention of a possible change of venue was initiated by Brisbane. The AFL have said nothing. And ofcourse the Club would object to any last minute changes. I don't think there can be much doubt that it is in the best interests of CFC to play in Melbourne in front of 40,000 fans. In the interests of the members, supporters, players and I would think the AFL.

As of this moment, the Club has not been contacted by the AFL regarding any change of venue. In my view this means the venue has been finalised. The fact tickets are on sale is a bit of a give away too.

Look forward to seeing you all at the Dome on Saturday.
