Lapps has been in the Navy Blue for so long I forgot he was a St Kilda reject.

Harry falls into that category too.

Would be interesting to see our strike rate, as we had some horror pick ups from other clubs too.

Hicky & Rice were my favourite "rejects".

Simon Verbeek - my all time favourite reject. Quality bloke and gave everything he had to give.

If you are talking reject who came good you would have to put Spalding and Madden as the 2 that gave the best value to Carlton - and really worked on their deficiencies to become really good players for us.

Brad Pearce was another reject who was supremely talented and realised his potential at Carlton over that 94/95 injury free period he had till his dodgy hamstrings finally curtailed his career - he could have been anything as long as he had 2 tall forwards around him taking the heat.

I'd have to go with Spalding and Madden as being the best value.

But I can't go past Hicky in the favouritism stakes, he did so much for us. Bled navy blue :)

Spalding wasn't rejected by Melbourne, he left for money.

He was just as good at Melbourne as he was at Carlton, he just didn't have the cream around him that he did at Carlton.

You must have taking all the cream in Melbourne's Salary Cap around that time hey Ox!!!

Tell us why do you display such hatred of Carlton and a complete lack of professional research when you discuss our list on SEN Ox???

"Rejects" make up only part of the equation. There can be "re-cycleds", "pick-ups", "Re-treads", "trades" etc. The only rule is they came from another club.

Spalding never got to settle at Melbourne. One week he'd be at CHF the next at CHB. Carlton gave him the chance (after a bit of a teething period) to nail down CHF, and he did so very well.

Sticks - 3 time b&f for Glenelg before we poached him. Almost single handedly won them the 85 premiership.

Bradley - 3 time b&f for the swampies before we poached him.

Hardly can call it poaching when we offered them a chance to parade their wares in what has always undisputedly been the big league.

Couldn't kick to save his life at Melbourne. At Carlton he learnt how to kick (think Ken Judge may have taught him).

I would prefer to call them discards...Dean Rice was a favourite..similar to Chris Johnson from Brisbane...good skills, very brave and great clubman...considering his injuries the qualityof his footy was excellent and he was a player who was reliable and consistent as anyone in that era...

Val Perovic was the other...played on the wing at the Saints but when he went to CHB at the Blues became one of the best we have seen in that position if not the best....you want real football toughness...didnt get any tougher than Rice or Perovic....they were real footballers....

Yeah I forgot about Val Perovic - he was a great get, however you will find that he played CHB for the Saints before he got to us.

alex ruscuklic or rodney galt

    :)

on a more serious note: kevin heath wasn't too bad - played mostly as a CHB and BP, but could also switch ends)

greg wells only stayed with us a short time and participated in a premiership (his time was up at the demoNS)

What about Jim Francis? He'd go close to our best ever, considering his contribution to Carlton over 30 odd years. Recruited from Hawthorn, here are his achievements.

162 Games, 52 Goals
Best & Fairest 1935 & 1940
Premiership Player 1938
Captain 1936 and 1941-43
Vice Captain 1937-40
Senior Coach 1956-58
Coach Carlton Under 18s 1945
Coach Carlton Under 19s 1946-50
Vice Captain of Victoria 1941
Height 183cm, Weight 80kg

I have to somehow squeeze Rhys into my top 3!

I wonder how Nick Stevens will be viewed in ten + years time? He's still got a lot of footy ahead of him and should win at least one or more B&F in his time at the Blues.
