I’m actually not as critical of SOS as some others.
However, he does tend to redraft players he has previously picked even with the hindsight of seeing them underperform at the level..
While it is true he is not alone in picks/trades that don’t quite work out, I don’t think there are too many with such a prolific record of redrafting their own draft picks who have underperformed or continuing to over-rate players despite ordinary exposed form?
I'm confused
You are or you're not critical of SOS redrafting his failures?
SOS has a blatant achilles heal. Arrogance.
To clarify, I’m not as critical as some of his decisions, particularly early on, at Carlton. I think the approach to go for the spine first and then the mids makes sense, esp with those available in the 2015 draft.
With the redrafting GWS players, we didn’t have much to play with at the time and needed to turnover a lot of average players on our list so I can understand him taking a punt on recruiting a bunch of ex-GWS players. It was a bit of a Hail Mary hoping that one or two might prove to be worth their initial rating.
However, over time it became clear that it was less a calculated Hail Mary and more about a faith or arrogance untroubled by actual performance which prompted him to redraft players who did not make the grade.
So, not as critical about his approach at the time.
But recognising the unvarnished failure of this approach and, yes the arrogance in his dogged pursuit of players he liked irrespective of performance.
