yep. we're the closest we've been since '95. this season revealed some chinks and deficiencies. fix them, upgrade some positions and we're right there in the mix next year.

You missed - modified game plan

One of the two forwards to play back - that solves a significant issue

Most teams field two tall forwards, but I concede that you've qualified that with "really competent".

Forwards who played in the remaining finalists' most recent games:

Brisbane.
Daniher: 201cm
Hipwood: 203cm
(5 goals total)

Geelong.
Cameron: 196cm
Neale: 203cm
(6 goals total)

Port.
Marshall: 198cm
Georgiades: 192cm
(4 goals total)

Sydney.
Amarti: 197cm
McDonald: 196cm
(2 goals total)

Vs Carlton.
Curnow: 194cm
McKay: 204cm

no one in that lists warrants us spending a combined 2.5 mil in cap on FB, with weiters and sam.

only the bulldogs have the forwards that need two really good FB's ... but hawks with the smallest key backs in the game, handled the dogs rather easily in the elim final.

we definitely need another key back. it's a shame young never worked out. he's the right profile for the job.

I hope houston saves us from ourselves and stays at Port.

Get cheaper trades of players that are not getting opportunities to fill needs. I would sell farm for Sam Dekoning as he fills a strong need. But not Houston at that age.

I would still trade Kennedy, and Owies. Maybe keep Carol if we dont get another mid. Sign weitering and TDK to long term deals. Sign Walsh for 2-3 years.

Let Cerra and the rest wait till next year and see where we are at with durability, need etc.

Go to the draft with the rest. Change the game plan. Get us fit.

With the new Tassie team coming in soon we need to hang on to our pick 11.
Agree with SDK but I can't see him leaving Geelong.
TDK is a priority to re-sign followed by Walsh. If rumours are true Weitering will re-sign soon.
Interesting times ahead.
A new game plan is a must.

i'd be ringing hawks and seeing if jai serong can be had. battle and barass push him so far down the pecking order, he'll never get a game. he's big enough and athletic enough to do a job for us.

192cm, don't we have a glut of defenders at that size?

Sam DeKoning or Dan Houston either would an important addition if we’re to be so lucky, it doesn’t take a genius to that out.
Got the fingers crossed, a bit luck makes all the difference.

Yes I noticed - maybe SDK is 'gettable'. The Dogs will want more than pick 16-18 for Bailey Smith however pick 11 should be enough.
SDK is 4 years younger than Houston and I can't see us challenging for a flag with Young or Sam Durdin in the side.

6'3" and athletic is good size? weiters is 6'4" and barely leaves the ground.

At 23 I would give up 11 for SDK before Houston.

Weiters
SDK
Crippa
Harry
Charlie

Looks good to me.

he would be cheaper than Houston as well I suspect.

If he's not in their best 23 for a final we should drive a hard bargain

I’d give 11 and 31 for SDK if we could move next year’s first into this year.

That’s the spine sorted for next 5 years

Unbelievable.

Any wonder the horoscopes made it into the nightly news.

Dan Houston is a star, but the Blues don’t lack for speed and dash off half-back, their issue has been a lack of maximising them strategically. They kick long and wide to contests out of the backline, rather than picking their way through defensive zones.

If they hand over pick 11, are they missing a great opportunity to add some young talent into a list that will soon begin to profile older? They’ll add the Camporeale brothers - Ben and Lucas - under father-son rules, with both expected to fall outside the top 35 picks.

Carlton has been prone to making big trade period splashes in recent years – Williams, Cerra, McGovern and Saad were all big additions, and Houston feels like a similar play.
