My personal favourites were Stan "the man" Gilday and in particular Mark Hegarty...Both should have made it..

I think you forgot about Spiro; 7dom....played 62 games for us -1981-86; and 35 for St.Kilda 87-90.

Greg's part of my list above at 20 years old in 1987.

The team listed was of 23 players....someone had to miss out.

I was really irritated to miss that one - I was in Europe an missed the entire season. The only game saw the the Battle of Brittain - which we lost!

Look at the reserves team and think about how many senior teams it would beat today. We had a list then.
I was also very disappointed that so few of those kids went on. Mark Edwards looked very promising, as did Phil Poursanidis.

In the days when the lists were around 45 to 50 you could carry a host of good junior players in the ranks - but our philosophy in those days was to recruit as many as you could from the Bendigo League and as many interstaters as you could, it was very hard for juniors to get a run.

But I recall in around 1981/82 (our back to back years) we played a game against Geelong - with a near Reserves Team that included the likes of Brendan Hartney, Rohan Burke (who were all pretty good players). We had a host of injuries in the firsts and we had about half a dozen players from the Reserves called up to play. We were not expected to win but we did under very trying circumstances.

David Parkin ordered that a plaque be put up in the Social Club with this teams details on it honouring those who beat Geelong that day. I am not sure if the plaque is still there.

What happened to those boys called up from the Reserves that week you may ask?? Probably dropped back to the Reserves the following week - to allow, Fitzy, Dominator, Harmes, Sellers, Bucks etc to come back in. :wink:

I think it was Round 18 - 1981, we beat Geelong at Princes Park with a virtual Reserves Team (17.13 to 12.10) I think the rover you are referring to is Rod Waddell who does post here from time to time.

Note also only 4 players over 6 ft!

Thanks warby, some of that information will be perfect for the Blueseum.

Think I will have to create a specific reserves section to detail some of these premiership sides.

WRT jumper numbers, a couple of those boys never played seniors I think, that sort of info is perfect for the new Squad Locker Room section of the site which will hopefully highlight some details about listed players who never quite made it to senior action.

Hard to imagine these guys were only 27 and basically at an age where they should be in their prime, but unable to get a game.

Anyone know how many senior games Buckley and Harmes played in 87?

I didn't know he played U19's. Not the surprise selection afterall in that pre-season draft.

Jimmy Buckley played 2 games in 1987, in rounds 13 and 14, named in both games on the interchange bench. Did come back to play 12 games in 1988 though.

Harmes never played a game in 1987, but played 11 games in his final season of 1988.

At least they avoided retirement in Moorabbin.

Love this thread ... some of my old favourites from the early days (well, MY early days anyway) have actually been mentioned:

* Mark Majerczak
* Darren Ogier
* Paul Starbuck

All we need is Dean Strauch and we have a set!

Sheldon, Buckley and Harmes were all probably just too old, but I'll stand corrected.

Sheldon debuted in 1977 - I think as a 17 year old, Buckley debuted in 1976 as a 16 year old, I think Harmes debuted in 1978. I remember Marcou playing in the reserves in 1978.

Sheldon, Buckley & Harmes were 19 in 1979, but whether they were too old for the U19s depends on the cut-off date and their actual birthdays.

I think Marcou is a year or two older than those three.

1990 Carlton 14.15.99 v Melbourne 11.15.81

At the time a lot of Melbourne fans complained because a fair number of the Blues' players had senior experience. Players like Dominic Fotia, Simon Verbeek, Stephen Edgar, Andrew Phillips, Jamie Dunlop, Tim Rieniets, Ashley Matthews. The core of a top-flight Senior AFL side, that's for sure.

The squad (as per the Grand Final Record) included Michael Sexton (3 senior games at that stage of his career), Fraser Brown (14 games), Brett Ratten (1 game) and a certain A. Koutoufides (no first name is listed and this chap was yet to make his senior debut and he wasn't wearing 43).

Listed in the squad was David Glascott. If he played it means he'd been part of Carlton premiership sides in the U19s, Reserves, and Seniors (and possibly Night (1983)). Is there any other player with such a claim?

The coach of the team was Rod Ashman.
