Inspired by a conversation over in talking recruitment, thought I'd create a thread.

Given a few of us will be approaching their 20 year mark (&, by extension, the 20 year anniversary of Black Friday, uuuugh), interested to hear if people can recall at what point in Carlton time they joined.

Believe it or not I'm sure I actually stumbled across TBV (but didn't post) when we traded in Mckernan. End of 2001. Most likely when I wasn't occupied browsing rotten.com, although I guess the mckernan trade could've been documented on there also

Had a read over a day or two at work, then left my office job, & didn't even have a PC at home, so that was it.

2003 got another office job & once again found TBV around trade week. This was the year Pagan went shopping in the bargain basement, & it was actually a pretty exciting time. Even synbad thought Pagan was a genius for getting so many solid B graders through the door

Except most of them turned out to be C graders at best...

Started posting in that offseason, then in early 04 went to the first bounce gathering, upstairs in the old social club. That was a good night!

I still didn't have a computer at home in those days so on weekends away from the office I'd go to an internet cafe in Preston, just to catch up on TBV.

Interested to hear others' reflections....

Well…

D-day in 2002 happened and I wanted to know what I wasn’t hearing.

Everything I saw of Daniel Wells struck me as the sort of player we should be targeting.

And our club was sick.

I wanted us to get well soon.

Get Wells Soon.

GWS.

I searched online and ended up at CSC.

That became my version of Carlton online for the next few years but as the lines started to blur and CSC ate itself I joined TBV and then moved to TC for all the obvious reasons after that.

In the wash up of the salary cap scandal we lost Daniel Wells and Brendan Goddard and I was left with a name that would one day be attached to a footy team in the western suburbs of Sydney.

I reckon I joined late 2001 and definitely the mckernan trade featured a lot in early discussions.

Hard to believe Mckernan was only with us for 2 seasons.

Felt a lot longer.

I was a long time poster on U2 mailing lists/forums throughout the mid-late 90s, and when they released an album I hated in 2000 I went looking for other internet based forums/lists to argue on.

I joined Knees Up Mother Brown, a West Ham Forum, in 2000 and TBV the following year I reckon.

I reckon I joined TBV in that same 2003 off season. Was on a day off when GoBaggers had his meltdown and watched the demise of the forum in real time.

From memory CK you missed the whole thing whilst at work…?

Came over here as soon as it was created. Met some great people through this weird community over the 2 decades.

What times….

some were the best of them…others were often
the worst…of them…!

there was word we were going to be stripped of our
picks…”surely NOT” i thought…that’s un-HEARD of…!

I’d left for work early…driving from Berwick to Edithvale
to open my flower shop…opposite the railway
station there…beach side…!

driving down Thompsons rd I’m thinking…gee nothing
on the radio…looks like everything’s going to be ALLL-right…
welcome to Carlton Brendon and Daniel…!

as I’m approaching Patterson Lakes…driving past the
sewerage treatment plant…I’m pretty up beat…
even the fine “aroma of the people” wasn’t going to
get me down…!

as i drive over the Frankston freeway…i begin my
right hand turn to head North towards Springvale rd…!

right on the bend there was a news break…not sure
what happened…but all my brain remembers
hearing was…”losing their picks having been found
guilty”…!

i lost my mind…couldn’t wait to get to the shop to
set up the radio properly…!

fast forward to mid 2003…and my band buddies
decided i needed a pewta…if I’m running a business…
i need a website…!

so they bought me a years subscription of broadband…
how nice of them…about 700 squid…full dial up stuff…!

i don’t know how it happened…NO idea how i found it…
but next thing i know…it’s TBV…!

what joy…my people…!

and like Charles…i didn’t have anything at home…so if
there was a breakdown…or i got desperate…I discovered
the Internet cafe…weren’t they wonderful…
speaking of…”aroma of the people”…!

i remember meeting folk from here early doors…
and many of my friends would call me out…”ya going to
meet your internet geek buddies hey”…?

we wouldn’t have it any other way would we…!

kindest regards tommi

That was the one that broke him onto the scene. Not to sound pretentious but I was into the album he put out before that one

Tommi it was the one about a suit you borrowed from a friend

I was pretty much unaware of online Carlton forums but in the excitement of the Judd trade, I came across TC and joined.

not sure when I joined but yes, it was in the dark cavern of confused turmoil that I saw this faint blue pulsating light and finally found a place to weep and rage and rejoice regardless of what the @#$%&! was happening to our club.
