I don't know what Michael Voss will be like as OUR coach. I do know he is one of the best AFL players in history. He was hard, never seemed to compromise, did not shirk a contest, was physical, but maybe most importantly was a team player that never accepted anything below best effort, nor did he give it.

Now IF he can translate all of that into his coaching, get our team on the page, add a consistent reliable game plan which instills clear plans for both our defense and attack, can identify AND implement each player into their CORRECT and most damaging position and give them some continuity in that role/position, instill a never say die attitude on the field AND provide some decent winning ways, this guy maybe the best thing that has happened to our club!

No pressure. Its a lot to ask, but sorry I've heard the "I will do this and bring this" etc mantra for decades, and the most recent celebration of premiership success was over 20 years ago and you can bet 80K members plus countless supporters are crying out for on field success again. I know I am.

Good luck Michael Voss!

Also, it would be refreshing to see the majority of Carlton supporters get around this guy and give him a chance. 3 years is not long. Lets try not to hang him after a handful of games....

Finally, bring us Lappin and Scarlett as Assistant coaches please!

Well said.

Same.

I am genuinely excited to see what happens with Stocker, Kemp and Dow under Voss.

Others also.

He was a great player and I can only imagine that getting sacked from a club where he was an absolute legend would have been a crushing blow. There's not many larger public humiliations than a superstar player/senior AFL coach losing their job.

But instead of sooking it up and walking away, he has gone back to hone his skills. He's moved his family interstate, swallowed his pride, taken a secondary role and put in the hard yards to start the learning process again. I like his pathway. He knows success, he knows leadership and he now knows humility and the frailty and uncertainty that we mere mortals have to contend with.
If he understands his weaknesses, surrounds himself with complementary people and most importantly, allows them to do their jobs, I think he'll be a great coach.

Good point BV.

Contrast that to Hird.....

It's horrible to say, but i could never in my life imagine a Carlton player playing at that level.

Maybe Scotland on his very best days

Let's hope Voss can change the culture.

Yes but I also sensed he was slightly embarrassed by Sayers' gushing about him. Let's hope he's got fire in the belly to ensure Voss is a success

My advice, Des, is to sit back and enjoy the off-season while Voss and Co get to work.
If you - like me - find it difficult to switch off, focus on the trading/drafting and hearing about how we are 'flying' on the training track and never been fitter/stronger etc...
Then, get back into it for Round 1 next year and, as we start to win more than we lose, I think your dislike of Voss will start to subside...
Hang in there

Thanks. I’ll try my best!

That's the ticket.

We're all in this together: a united front.

I wasnt sure about him either, but he starts off having denied the immortal enemies Collingwood 1 and Essendon*** 2 flags as a player (obviously as part of a team).

Then you watch videos like this, and you go, he had some serious talent, and was hard as nails.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bizIJRKG_-U

Unfortunately that talent won't help him in the coaches box.

I'm sure he picked up something along the way.

Life's experience, is experience in life.

He's not going in the box as a novice of the game.

I'm sure it will help him.

I got to see that interview and announcement LIVE.

Shed a tear TBH...

3 new leaders at the helm before my eyes: Sayers, Cook and Voss.
I thought it was a huge improvement on Teague, Liddle and MLG for a start.
Felt like a new beginning. The start of something big.

When Sayers took liberty to let the audience know what happened this morning he mentioned how the same 3 gents were in contact with the players and staff. I suspect it was a zoom call and they were the first to be notified of the Voss appointment. The bit when Sayers said the audience started the chant "Vossy, Vossy, Vossy.." then "Cookie, Cookie, Cookie..." I was deeply moved. Softcock like.

Told me that the players have already got their heads in High Performance mode, and I bet, a sense of belief. Two days before the AFL GRAND FINAL. Talk about timing!

I assume Sayers would have told them, like he did in the live stream that he knew the plan to achieve High Performance culture across the club was going to show a dip on th back of that, hurting good people, and their families, and on long established relationships within the club. He knew he had to get the positions of the most important roles in the club fixed and grow on the back of that.

I can feel the sense of relief from the players, Sayers, us, the fans, and a feel we have come out the other end in a better place than we were not only 3 weeks ago, but also throughout the dreary year.

I don't share that feeling of ambiguity and underwhelmed like some other posters have said. I can't see why I would after that.

This is a great moment we all share here at Talking Carlton. One we will never forget, just like the day Juddy signed. Too easy to be a glass half empty and see dark skies ahead given what we have endured for 20 years. For me, its Finals next year.

Sayers President
Cook CEO
Russell High Performance
Voss Head Coach

The Playing list, I believe in.

New Assistants will be better than before.
Everything in between a better place.

The $50M upgrade.
AFLW season to look forward to.

We are a Destination club...welcome Cerra, welcome Hewett...

Blue Skies

and once again, the biggest story during the AFL Finals series and the week of the GRAND FINAL.....CARLTON!!!!!!

Bring on Premiership #17

wow, Bondi.

just wow

reading this post actually made me nervous for the first time in a long time that we could actually acheive. i havent had that feeling with this team for a long while

I'm pretty sure players are going to be far more intimidated getting the 'Glare' from Vossy, more than they ever did from Teaguey.

Imagine fronting up to explain your late night drinking during rehab to Voss, Scarlett and Ayres.

Frightening.

Is Ayres coming on board Cazz?
I reckon he will be brilliant...have banged on about it for weeks with my mates

No idea but I did hear a rumour that he was at Icon Park a few weeks back once the selection process was in full swing. Personally I just don’t see how you go wrong with Ayres on board.

I heard him interviewed on SEN recently and he rocked. How he managed to keep Port Melbourne so, so competitive over such a long period, as a stand alone club speaks volumes for his standing as Coach and mentor of young men.

I talk about Neil Balme all the time and Ayres is that same worldly, level head in a crisis character. Within football circles you never hear a bad word about him. He is spoken about glowingly by important people.

Regards Cazzesman

And he would be a great sounding Board for Voss , ayres has been thru it all

That's not a bad thing. Sayers is one of the most open and enthusiastic communicators I've seen and he will cop a bit of shit for it from time to time. :)

Unbelievable. Not only that but the eye contact and respect that all three showed each other throughout that presser was so great to watch. I honestly felt like I was watching three people with genuine trust in each other. Confident and resolved and dare I say..... aptitude to each do their job and do it well.

One thing I'm certain of.....this Sayers bloke and what's his name Cook are going to be well liked and will get the very best out of people.

How is it inspiring outside of the novelty of having a new coach.

You can have all that but means nothing if you struggle in the coaches box.

We had to rummage through the $2 bin to find the last experienced coach.

His winning record is worse than Teague's and he set Brisbane back years.

He may be better this time round but why risk it? I would've taken the easy solution and looked for an upgrade, which is what you do if you change coach.

It's not about the easy solution it's about picking the right person. You just don't take that risk.

Have a look at each and every bitter sentence above.
Is this a balanced view? Is this the prose of someone bitter and twisted?

Have a listen to the football world. You're on your own jim. The last jeer.

Have a good think why Teague got SACKED. Everyone knows why. Started well then the facade was broken down by our opponents...got worse and worse.

$2 bin...very nice welcoming jim ... to a legend of the game.

You've judged him before he even starts...how do you know he's not the right solution Nostradamus?

This guy is about connection and care. There's a challenge ahead of him, just as there would be for any new coach. He will change the narrative for the better. The players now have a coach, not a mate.

The club went through a thorough process. Kingsley has missed out 5 times that I can recall, ditto Voss. Both have reached the last 2. You weren't at any of the interviews but find it comfortable to degrade his achievement whilst you also degrade your club.

This post is a disgrace. Its not an honest opinion. Its too bitter to be honest or reasonable.

Like I said a few days back...let go of your hate for the club, and of sacking of Teague. Teague failed and consequently sacked. He's gone.

We are all moving forward.

Voss was unanimously selected. He was selected by the likes of Williams, Parkin, Kinnersly, Cook.....you know better than them?

Listen to the players like reigning Brownlow Medallist, Ollie Wines and what he says about Voss. Look at what he's done for the Port midfield group...Boak in his 30's, players who were on their last legs.

Voss moves hearts and minds. He has a huge job to do. Cook will improve the club culture and support around the coach and players. We all know that.

Sayers has put the right people in the important seats because he wants best practise and a high performance environment. The Review must have found some shortfalls. He's done something about it. Already, without a ball being bounced, we look a better club and sound like we have stepped up another level.

Like you said "only hinsight will tell us [if he's the right choice]", yet you have written him off before he starts. Get a grip.

Put your rotten tomatoes back in the bin, where they belong. Wash your mouth and pay some respect to the process we have craved for, for the last 2 decades, and give the man a go.

Good one mate.

How refreshing was that presser , no bs talk or jargon , all spoke transparently , sayers busting for 2022 to start to prove the worth of this mighty club

And Voss ready to show the boys the leadership they need

Big career defining preseason coming for everyone at this club ,

Let’s go baggers

I really like this article, even though it's short.

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/afl/the-remaking-of-michael-voss-carlton-coach-20210923-p58uag.html#comments

From that angle, his development and his second chance kind of make more sense.

He talks the talk, at least. Let's see what he can do.

It actually hurt my ears...every time he started to speak...

Wife would hear him from the other room and she would call out to me..."your coach is on tv" incase I wasn't in front of the set.

The first thing Voss should do is make Weitering captain and Walsh his deputy
Let’s hope he has learnt from his mistakes

And most importantly how will he be innovative
Time will tell
Sayers always wanted a big name

Personally I would have gone for Kingsley
