I know he was tired, but I was disappointed in Teague's dismissal of the importance of the biggest rivalry in the Country, bar none.
I get it, and his focus and tired, Hub pressures, perhaps a night on the piss, or family interuptions, but he could have acknowledged he knows how big this game is on the Australian Sports Calendar, and due to Covid its another Hub game.
Just sayin' it shits me and I hope the PR machine tell him so. He's a former B & F for the club FFS. This rivalry means something!
I just saw it for the first time and I thought he was short with the questioners, almost terse.
Usually he answers and rattles on a bit but in this one, it was short and crisp followed by silence while the next question got looked up...
The rivalry bit is not as important for the young ones as it is for us oldies and the 1970 GF for most people is just a story. "OK, so it was the biggest comeback in history and OK, the biggest crowd yahdy yah but I wasn't born then."
In the John Nicholls interview I posted earlier in this thread, I did take note of the fact that he was introduced in the leadup as 'the Captain of the 1970 Carlton GF team, John Nicholls'. My instant reaction was one of,
"Hey, you! This bloke needs no introduction." but then I remembered that it was 50 years ago after all and anybody under 55 probably can't even remember it.
Anybody under 45 looks at the 79 and 81 GF so it is relevant for them.
Anybody under 35 looks at the 87 and 95 who weren't against Collingwood anyway.
We read it here all the time about the rivalry with Essendon** and Geelong and StK, Hawthorn. In 1970 Hawthorn was on its last legs.
It's a sign of the times.
When Teague played, the rivalry was against.... well nobody really because we were barely relevant, even struggling for our existence.
In that light, I don't mind he brushed it off a bit. The current players have no idea. They know of a huge rivalry between Sydney and WCE. Teague did acknowledge it but the current rivalry between the clubs is pushed by Eddie and the older brigade of players and supporters. It will happen again when we are playing them in finals and all the old vids get re-resurrected.
Well said. Good argument.
Fair enough Teague is focussed on the now, as he feels there's no need to draw on inspiration from the traditional rivalry.
I'm sure he would if he though he needed but he is focussed on playing our way, in our half, for 4 quarters.
He is a man on a mission.
I'm sure every player knows about the rivalry between Carlton Collingwood.
Its the biggets rivalry in the country.
No need for stand alone game like an Anzac Game, Queens Birthday Game...to get 90000 at the ground. Wonder why?
No doubt the rivalry is still significant for most supportes because its been drummed in on them by their parents and the greater football public.
Those born since 2000 can't miss the fact its a great rivalry. Its in their face. Not pushed just from Ed Maguire.
I'm OK with it, but I prefer Carltonians in Melb acknowledging the rivalry in the media, because they certainly are up here in Sydney and this is Swans country.
This morning at kids footy, the talk was about this Carlton Collingwood game.
The rivalry between these 2 clubs is bigger than you think for any age group.
My kids loved the acknowledgement made by the locals.
