Setterfield - Silvagni - Murphy - ??

The VFL bye came at a bad time.

O'Brien? Hasn't had a chance to regain his spot. Provides run, perhaps?
Kennedy? Extra mid support?
Schumacher? Half-back replacement. Knows the system.
Pickett. Extra run?

Pickett is out for the season.

I mean Garlett. (Which is embarrassing for me.)

It would annoy me greatly if Garlett is selected ahead of O’Brien or Schumacher.

You'll require a 7th defender for rotations. Schumacher is probably the better option.
Otherwise push Jack into the defensive rotation. Then reshuffle the front half.
Our midfield has been a strength. Cripps, Dow, Fisher, Cuningham, Murphy, Setterfield, Walsh, SPS all had centre square stints against the Pies.

Given Levi will need to play 2nd ruck from defence, and given that GWS have some size in attack, I reckon the 7th defender needs to be able to play tall-ish to give us flexibility with our rotations. Goddard has been in reasonable form in the VFL and knows the system. But I would prefer Jack be used as that 7th defender who can also play other roles (mid/forward) as required, and then bring in O’Brien to give us a bit more outside run off the bench.

The net result is we lose a little size for extra run - ie:

In: Newman & O’Brien
Out: Plowman & Williamson

Schumacher doesn’t look ready to me. Although if it comes down to a choice between he & Garlett (eg. if Newman doesn’t come up), I would take Schumacher. That says more about my opinion of Garlett as a defender than it does anything else.

I would give Schumacher a go
Gartlett is crap
Lang ditto
Goddard will struggle at AFL level as he has because he is so slow

Sometimes you need to take a risk at the selection table
Schumacher May achieve expectations

Make McGovern be second ruck or play down back
Start earning his pay packet

Our depth or lack of it is starting to be tested

Yep.

Thankfully my son's game at Heathcote starts at 12.00 and finishes before 2pm.

Plenty of time to get out to showgrounds and support the great jumper.
I love that Boutique Stadium.

I am expecting GWS to be frothing at the mouth after their pitiful effort on the weekend.
It is their home game too. So not expecting a win, but anything can.....

We will be there to support and cheer the good stuff, both sides...but louder for the Bluebaggers.

If they are training on Friday, I might go out there too.

Being a Sunday game I thought they might have a training run Saturday
I am going - if you want to say hello just look for the Old Misery Guts

Like the idea of Walsh HF for at least one game for the "rest" and see what he can do. Push the versatile SOJ to HB. Kennedy in as another mid and we have one other I would leave to the selectors ....

The problem with playing Levi back this week or bringing in Goddard is that GWS whilst they have height in the forward line have athletic mobile talls and neither Cas nor God can cover that type (well actually God I guess being omnipotent could by definition, but I meant GodDARD not the Alpha-and-the-Omega).

We need mobile height down back and with Plowman out, Jones apparently out again and Macreadie not close to ready for selection our stocks in that regard are stretched very thin.

Marchbank, Weitering and Casboult is enough height.
Bringing in Goddard isn't like for like as a replacement for Plowman IMHO.
Casboult can take Finlayson and Weitering can have the big job of Cameron. Marchbank can take Himmelberg.
Newman, Daisy and Stocker can fill the smaller defender roles. The rotating defender is the interesting scenario. I'd consider putting Ed back on Toby Greene. He can also go with him up the ground.
The other option is play Daisy on Greene and bring Schumacher in as the 7th defender.

THIS weekend could mark the anticipated return of Carlton defender Nic Newman.

Newman is one of a six inclusions to an extended bench that also features Alex Fasolo, Jarrod Garlett, Matthew Kennedy, Harrison Macreadie and Lochie O'Brien.

They replace Lachie Plowman and Tom Williamson, who have come out of the side through injury.

The extended interchange will be cut down to the final team of 22 on Friday at 5pm.

The new recruit sat out the last two rounds after sustaining a patella tendon injury during their Round 6 clash with Hawthorn.

After an injury-riddled couple of weeks, Carlton’s backline would relish in the return of an experienced head despite having been well-managed by youngsters in recent weeks.

Harrison Macreadie has also been named in the extended squad for what could be his first senior game of the season if selected.

After an impressive debut season in 2017, the young defender missed the entire 2018 before a back injury delayed his pre-season. He showed some signs of his class in his two VFL games for the year.

Off-season recruit Alex Fasolo has also been named in the extended squad after a six-week stint in the VFL.

If selected this would be the ex-Pie’s third senior appearance in navy and first since the Blues Round 2 clash with Port Adelaide.

Sunday’s game against the Giants begins at 4:40pm at GIANTS Stadium.

I’d be a bit worried if I was Schumacher. Macreadie (2 VFL games for the year and hasn’t played for 3 weeks) is named ahead of him in the squad. If Schumacher can’t even even make the squad with all the injuries we’ve had to our defenders, you do start to wonder where he’s at with his footy.
