I believe so ...

Going by an article in todays HUN it is not official just yet but apparently just a formality.
Article mentions he could be a chance for round 1.

Cottrell too. Well well well.

Hear he's training well and for a spot.

More good news.

Both add value to the squad.

Gibbons desire to make the grade, Cottrell's elite running capacity, along with walshy's class can only keep lifting the bar for the rest.

CARLTON Football Club is delighted to announce the signings of Michael Gibbons and Matthew Cottrell as rookies for the 2019 AFL season.

Both players had their dream of joining an AFL list realised on Friday when they were informed of the news alongside their new teammates at the Blues’ pre-season camp on the Sunshine Coast.

The emotional moment was the culmination of a lifetime of hard work for the pair.

After emerging as a star of the VFL, Michael Gibbons will get his AFL chance in navy blue. (Photo: Carlton Media)

Gibbons’ story has been well-documented, with the versatile midfield-forward spending the last five years as a consistent, standout performer for Williamstown in the VFL.

In that time, the 23-year-old became a dual J.J Liston Medal winner and Norm Goss Medallist in the Seagulls’ 2015 premiership win.

A natural ball-winner with great athletic ability and a supreme hunger for the contest, Gibbons has also been named in the VFL Team of the Year in each of the last three seasons.

Cottrell did not take long to establish a reputation for himself at the Blues as an elite runner.

The impressive 19-year-old blitzed the Club’s pre-season time trial, running sub-six minutes to dethrone the Blues’ annual time trial king and fierce competitor, Ed Curnow.

A wingman who possesses outstanding endurance, Cottrell was a state middle distance runner through juniors before spending the last two years in the TAC Cup with the Dandenong Stingrays.

Under the pre-season supplemental selection period, Carlton had until March 15 to sign both players: however, their impressive pre-seasons to date meant that there was no reason to delay the decision.

General Manager of List Management and Strategy Stephen Silvagni said the Club was excited to officially welcome both players to the Blues.

“Michael and Matthew are talented footballers, but even more importantly they are quality people who we think will really add to our group on and off the field,” Silvagni said.

“’Gibbo’ in particular has done everything he possibly can over the last five years to give himself an opportunity and now he has one. We believe he will really add some energy for us up forward and through the middle of the ground.

“Cottrell has hit the ground running from the moment he walked through the doors of our club. His running ability will be a real asset to our list and we look forward to him developing his game even further.”

SOS could have gone either way with our choices.
Youth or experience?

There are other players he could have considered but didn't.
IMO, the 2 selected are fantastic for our squad.

Gibbons is salivating, and has runs on the board against big bodies ...has since 2015.
He's neither young nor old. He's perfect for a hole we have, in form and super fit.

Cottrell is a project player. If we can use his running weapon in 2020 onwards bring it on.
I like a project player or 2 with x factor, that might work out with good development.
I believe today we are as a club who can develop properly.

SOS thinks Gibbons is ready to play forward midfield.
As far as forward ability is concerned imo he fills a hole.

I heard from a mate in Tennis Australia today.
Yesterday he spoke with someone in the tennis organisation who was a pioneer of Aussie Rules pre Swans.
He rang me to tell me this Administrator said he and his mates think Gibbons is ready to go.
He also said he thought Gibbons will make it before any 2019 draftee this year, and possibly play round 1.
He's a perfect fit.

I pondered and thought of the prospect of Gibbons playing in round.
Maybe Bolts makes FP a spot someone has to take from him.

From what I saw in the preseason, Gibbons gives us intensity and heat on the opposition.
He's exactly what we need fo play a Betts Garlett x factor in the FP.
He kicks goals...and plays midfield.

He will turn out to be the rough diamond replacement for a Bugg.

I'm excited. I really believe he's ready for AFL.

Nice one, but I think our #1 draft pick's name is already in the whiteboard.
Sounds like Macca...

I'd put money on that our No 1 pick will not be playing the small forward role in the FP.

There's debate as to who will fill the small forward role. We had a chance to recruit a mature ager but we traded him to Adelaide as part of the McGovern trade.
We could play a midfielder there, such as Murphy. Having recruited Gibbons who is as competitive as The Curnows may just be the player we needed for the small forward role. He's a beauty.

A question I just thought of. We have space to sign 3 players (Gibbons, Cottrell and one other). One of those spots is due to Docherty doing his knee again. What happens if he’s right to play at the back end of the season? Do we have to delist one of the 3? Or can the be put on some kind of inactive let?

Something to consider.

Below is list of our Almighty 1995 Premiership Team. (23 wins out of 25 games)
Looking at each Carlton player from the 1995 team, how many of our current list would be equivalent?

Eg Kouta and Cripps,
Earl and Charlie

What do you reckon?

Carlton
B: 14 Michael Sexton 1 Stephen Silvagni 39 Ang Christou
HB: 33 Matthew Hogg 35 Peter Dean 5 Andrew McKay
C: 13 Milham Hanna 7 Brett Ratten 43 Anthony Koutoufides
HF: 23 Dean Rice 11 Earl Spalding 6 Matt Clape
F: 2 Greg Williams 4 Stephen Kernahan (c) 19 Brad Pearce
Foll: 44 Justin Madden 21 Craig Bradley 20 Fraser Brown
Int: 16 Scott Camporeale 32 Adrian Whitehead 22 Glenn Manton
Coach: David Parkin

Brings a tear to my eye....best year to ever be a fan. Although the team between 79-82 had me as proud as ever to be a Carlton supporter.

The bottom six is the key to this, not the top 6.
Sexton, Whitehead. Manton, Rice, Hogg, Clape?

Hmm tough call this, but for mine take Sexton out of the bottom 6 and replace with Pearce.

Bit harsh on Pearce given he kicked over 50 goals. Maybe just make it bottom two: Manton and Whitehead?

There has to be a bottom six!
Everybody talks about the bottom six.

I thought about Pearce but he is in my bottom seven or eight....
