Yep. Depth is starting to happen and that's the secret to success.

Good discussion.
Interesting that there is such a wide range of views of our best 22.
And for the first time in a long time, I felt like I was leaving good players out rather than struggling to find good players to include.
Will be fun to watch bolts & co work it all out over the season (hopefully sooner rather than later).

Yep, the variation in suggested line-ups surely means that concerns regarding depth and discomfort around the ability of "bottom 6" selections is diminishing?

Early days obviously, but I presume this also means that MC's selection for the best 22 can now be tailored a little more on a horses-for-courses basis, depending on the composition of opposition strengths and weakness, something that has been previously unachievable.

Not too conservative.

Jones is an interesting one.
last year he and the rest of the players who played down back and there were about fifteen of them never had a chance to consolidate a defensive structure because I don't think we had one full game with the ideal back six together for the entire year. They were playing pinball down there. During all that, Jones managed to get a few bags kicked on him as well as stop some of the big boys from kicking too many and in the process was one of the highest defensive half contested marks in the comp. I am not sure we can leave him out based on last year. They all had pretty ordinary years, including Marchbanks and Weitering who should both improve if we can avoid a big turnover of players in the back six.
The other issue that Jones and the others had was that we were getting belted through the middle of the ground most weeks as teams ran us ragged, attacking in lines from half back. When the mids are giving their forwards silver service or are spreading the defence by running through the F50 straight at the goals while their forwards make space for them, the backs have to decide whether or not to leave their man and just attack the ball player. That inevitably leads to an easy over the top goal or a mistake. I can't remember a time when we were so easily scored against from close in. One game I think we had seven or eight goals kicked against us from inside the ten yard square.
I think Jones is still our best option and will judge him after he has had a chance to play in a stable back six. If he can't cut it then, fine but I think it's too early to cut him for Weitering just yet.

I also wonder if there was also a problem with the coaching/set ups/game plan. Because the problems in defence were apparent very early in the season, even before the 1st choice defenders started to go down with injuries. Hopefully the return of Amos to that area of responsibility will help.

Come on dannyboy.

We have turned full circle since SOS came on board.

Pickett comes back not in great condition.

Funny how we don't tolerate anything but ful commitment to the 17th Flag.

Disrespectful Pickett has a piece of his own medicine thrown back at him.

Now, its time to wake up and shape up or head to The Druggies: they're after pace and no standards.

That’s 9 players who didn’t play a game last year. At least 6 of them are walk up starts. Some weeks all 9 will probably play.

Murphy (13)
Weitering (14)
Marchbank (12)
Lang (11)
Pickett (7)
Cuningham (5)
Kreuzer (12)
Kennedy (12)
Garlett (11)
Plowman (13)

10 more players who had heavily interrupted seasons (Admittedly a couple were due to form but mostly injury). You would expect at the very least, half of that group would be selected if everyone was fit, and probably up to 8 of them.

If we can stay relatively injury free this season, it’s likely that some weeks we’ll have half a team of different players to last year. Sometimes more. We also have 36 players on our list aged 25 or younger. 10 players over 25. When you combine players coming back from injuries, players coming through draft and trade, and natural improvement and growth from young talent, it’s not hard to see us improving a lot next year.

I think a lot players who got regular games last season are going to see a lot of VFL action. Guys like Polson, Garlett, SOS, Levi etc won’t be gifted games like they were at times last season

and that is the way it should be, and we are finally at that place thanks to SOS and co, where players will be rewarded for effort.

Sustained effort in the twos get you a game

continous bad performances in the ones, get you a game in the reserve.

for too long its been a case of we havent had enough good players to demand that

Great post jale. Numbers tell a story about 2018

Injury plays a huge part in pressure for spots.
New players add further depth and fill holes.

Fingers crossed we have pressure for spots all year

I reckon that is band on the money.
I’d like to have Cuningham in but there’s no one to drop. I’d prob start Simpson back and one of the tall defenders to the bench

I reckon Thomas is likely to be better than stocker (and probably LOB) at least in 2019. I agree we want to get games into the young kids but wouldn't rate them as best 22 yet.

The more I hear Thomas is not in our long term plan, the more I realise he's needed in the short term.
2019 is about winning games. We are no longer a kindergarten.
He looks to be over his past injuries.

As much as I would like to play the kids, it shouldn't be a priority.

There's soooo many kids to develop.
I think to win we need our bigger bodies playing in 2019.

Thomas is finally free of injury, fit and eager in his last year.
He has AFL standard football nous and skill to go with it, the kids don't.

Bang!
And he isn't the only one.
We don't need as many and that's why Kerridge and co left but we still need some. Look at the GWS plan with their strategic trading.

Definitely Thomas in. His leadership and experience will be more valuable than ever this year, and he’s playing his best footy since he’s been at the club.

Also, Fasolo has far more runs on the board as a small forward than anyone on our list. He will play if fit.

Don’t think we should be playing both of Walsh and Stocker straight away when we already have Dow, O’Brien, SPS, Fisher, Setterfield finding still finding their feet. Get some bigger bodies around them. I reckon we should stagger the debuts of Walsh and Stocker unless their preseason form is so good they pick themselves

Thomas out for me, makes too many bad decisions with ball in hand. Not much of an impact considering he was playing the easiest role in modern football a lot of the time.
No way known should he be best 22, not even best 25. They need leaders at Northern and that's where he should spend his time now, use only in emergency.
