Not quite Rexy
There is good sledging and bad sledging.
Some of it can be quite humerous but then some people take it to far and in this instance it appears that way.

Maybe they were sledging him for ducking all the time but he thought they meant something else.

The irony of Carlisle, a bloke that escaped a club in the grips of the game's worst ever drug scandal, only to put video of himself doing drugs up on youtube just before he started work with an unsuspecting new employer, and consequently had to sit out a year of service for that new employer, on their paypacket......having a sledge at anybody else on a footy field is mind blowing.

https://youtu.be/SwHl1eOaQ9w

How about playing a straight bat and getting a kick before you start sledging Carlisle!

Ironically Carlisle had his best game so far this year against us.
18 disposals.
No prises for guessing who was his direct opponent was for the better part of the game

ST KILDA'S players have acknowledged their highly personal sledging of Marc Murphy crossed the line on Saturday, with Jarryn Geary attempting to contact the Carlton captain in the fallout from an ugly clash at Etihad Stadium.

The Saints on Monday met to discuss what the club described as "two to three back-and-forth incidents" that were thrust into the spotlight by Murphy's furious response to stricken defender Jake Carlisle in the third quarter.

The player-led meeting did not involve the coaching staff and it is understood CEO Matt Finnis was comfortable to close the issue internally on Monday afternoon.

OK…I hate Carlisle & I hate St Kilda & their fans.

But if the sledging isn’t to do with things like race, or kids, or a health condition, then I say sledge & be sledged. It’s a tough, uncompromising, hypercompetitive nasty sport, & men have been doing this for years in footy. Personally I’m just disappointed it’s become a big deal because other clubs won’t ease up using it against Murphy now.

I don’t want to hear complaints out of Carlton or its fans over stuff like this. I’d prefer we just became assholes ourselves. Another poster said he was happy to see Murphy have a go at Carlisle while he was down. Absolutely. (As long as he didn’t actually spit, which I highly doubt).

We need a guy like Anthony Franchina or Stephen Baker or that little c**t from Freo who always gets up Geelong’s noses.

I was rapt we had David Rhys Jones speak to the group before the Collingwood game – more of that please Blues. We’re too nice & we’ve been saying that for years on here.

We are a bit too nice. The only bloke in the side that you get the feeling might be a little anti-social in the right kind of way is ASOS and he has only just arrived. Can you imagine the scenes if somebody had said something like that about Jimmy Buckley's Mrs or Wayne Johnstone's Mrs or Peter Dean's Mrs or Greg Williams Mrs..........they would have had to build an octagon on the half way line!

I think if the player would be embarrassed to repeat what he had said in a public forum then he probably shouldn't be saying it. I would also extend your examples to include family, I think they should be left out of any sledging. I would be surprised after the attention its received, if its open slather with similar types of sledges on Murphy as you're suggesting.

Mostly I agree with you, except that I don't think that we're that nice anymore, as Callum Mills would attest. Don't know, and don't care what the sledge was about, provided it wasn't racial or about sexual orientation.

AFL teams are very close in terms of talent, so the psychological edge is important. Part of the mental discipline is not responding to a mindless sledge, as that gives a 'win' to the opposing team. As in the schoolyard, if you bite back, it only encourages more of the same behaviour.
