You're right Tommi, but the pressure was intense and the nerves would have being going nuts, I think we'll see an improvement in skills next week.
Nobody could criticise them for their attack on the ball or the man, I hope bolts shows that game to the men.

You've done us proud blue girls

I'd rather watch two teams going at it full bore, mistakes and all, than two teams playing safe, bruise free footy. Last night was a major win not just for Carlton but for the future of our game.

It was a perfect storm last night.
Great weather, traditional rivals, suburban ground, free entry and historic occasion but I think it will continue to grow.
The trick for the AFL is to get the pricing right. Free entry means a big loss when you consider ground rental, security, attendants, cleaning etc.
Make it too pricey and you keep people away.
It should be looked at like a Big Bash equivalent.
make it fun and a carnival like atmosphere, family event. Promote the stars.

Vescio is a star, I can see plenty of no 3 jumpers being worn around Melbourne this year for her.

As an aside, how well coached was Carlton as opposed to Collingwood. We just looked better organised, swpet the ball out of defense easily and created space in the forward line.
Collingwood played and looked like a bush league team in comparison. They obviously reecruited rough nuts to play physical. Except for their captain and a few others.

I dropped my mum and 15yo daughter off around 7pm. They struggled to find a seat. Both the 72 yo and 15 yo loved it.

I'm not sure where you all deem that the game was not exceptional- I've seen a lot of Women's/Youth Girls Football over the past 10 years and I can tell you that the game was exceptional.

Right oh......

let me start by saying this...i felt the urge to be
silly and use the phrase..."let's not beat around

i then threw in the average standard remark as
let's say collateral damage...!

now having said that...let me say this...my beef
is primarily with the AFL...the AFL and the penis...
i say AFL and the penis because they're two
things i hate being shoved down my throat...!

it's even worse when you've first been shown an
ice-cream that turns out to be a penis...!

that's right...the AFL are not only trying to shove
something down my throat...they're showing me a
salted caramel Magnum*...and then replacing it
somewhere along the line £#@&ing Dynamo style
with a PENIS...!

look i somehow feel I'm drifting a little...!

the thing is...when i hear a female sing make music
act write paint...i appreciate it for what it is...i never
say oh that's good for a girl...it's just plain bloody
good...!

so i have trouble using the words good for a girl...
and yet this is what we're being expected to feel...
sure sport is different i hear you say...but that's it
too...!

i know those girls gave their all and then some
last night...but I'm sorry if i can't buy it...I've been
spoilt for the last 53 years with the top level
of the sport we love...the best quality that can be

now it's all this...!

someone used the words "perfect storm" earlier...
that's right...it was...everything was right on the

let's not forget we're...(us CFC supporters)...more
than likely feeling the best about this today...we won...
first game...inaugural blah blah blah...!

you guys know how i feel about foundations...the
quicker it goes up the banger down it falls...see
my Pokémon rant pertaining to said phenomena...!

there's a whole separate problem i have with allotted
tv time to other female sports...I'd watch the Netball
before the football...at least it's the best possible
standard...!

again let me reiterate...it's not the girls fault they are
doing their best...I'm not going to the ladies 100m Olympic
Final and expecting an all inclusive WR time beating
the men's time too...!

I'm not a complete idiot...!

the thing is...even after realising it's a penis
being shoved down our throats...the AFL
will still be trying to pretend it's not...!

as for the girls...they had a R.H.G. ...!

What I'm trying to say is.....

i truly believe women...men...male...female...all
the same to me...total equality in my head...and
in my personal world all the women are infinitely
greater than us men...!

it's never...or will it ever be a gender issue...!

i just enjoy sport more than penis...!

this is one of the most articulate posts from you I have ever read
i agree with the thrust (pardon the pun) of what you are saying
an exclusive affluent class of people sitting on an unaccountable board (in this case, the AFL Board) ramming political agendas down my throat
that's the issue that digs at me - but again this political agenda is masquerading the real, motive being money -because it is only money that drives this and motivates the afl- the afl are bankrolling all the costs of this 1st year and carlton are putting up zero $

on the PP issue - the game last night shows that carlton love PP - just like the scum v blues at PP this time last year

for those who think im sexist - well I have been watching netball for over 10 years and think its absolutely intense and brilliant to watch particularly diamonds v silver ferns

My daughter's BFF is 14 and is an absolute gun!! I'm talking Vescio-like :smoking: .

She could hold her own out there right now, so if anyone thinks this standard is as good as it gets, think again, the next gen will definitely take it up a notch or two.

I reckon these women will be the highest paid female athletes in the country in a few years.

The game was enjoyable and I agree the standard will only get better.
Now that girls see they can go further with afl more will take it up/ switch sports and more demand will mean more opportunity, training, coaching and so on.

Found myself getting right behind the girls, cursing shit umpiring decisions, heart skipping a beat when we looked vulnerable, screaming my throat horse after every goal.

Pull on that beautiful, proud MONOGRAM and it's game @#$%&! on

For me it's a bit of a throwback to when players played almost purely for the love of the game and the fans (me) loved their passion for the game and contest.

Money will eventually dilute that though I presume...

Well no......

i was very happy for an Australian Olympic Gold...
that was a tad different...!

i LOVE women's golf...i can watch a lot of it because
the standard is terrific...but as it turns out i like
men's golf more and can watch twice as much
as the ladies...!

I'd rather watch TAC cup games with a women's
hour "wrap" up on Sunday nights...!

Summed it up perfectly, was talking to someone today about it and couldn't get passed the fact that if we had have lost and only kicked a goal we'd all be saying "it's only the women's game", obviously I needed more penis references.
Sad that other women's sports don't get the recognition because the press are sucking on the AFLs teet

Funny that...I hate netball as a game (at any level) and I'm sure people think I'm sexist because of it.

I watched a few live games of the BBLW this past season and thoroughly enjoyed doing so. Some fine skills on display there.

As for the AFLW, some skills have been very good, and many lacking abysmally. Will improve over time no doubt.

And of course, it's totally up to me if I watch it or not.

Why does it have to be a political decision, girls have been playing footy for years, we currently have a women's VFL comp, why can't that translate into an AFLW comp, just seems like a logical progression to me, the girls that played last night and today are the best in their chosen sport and deserve to be lauded for that and supported no different to the men that play football, we logically understand that the standard is not as high as AFL, it will improve as they get games under their belts, look at Darcy Vescio, everyone's wrapping her up after last night and tell me that she doesn't look at home on a footy field, Lauren Arnell set the tone at the first bounce and went hard and looks like what a captain is supposed to look like.

Why can't we just enjoy it for what it was, a bloody tough game of footy and support another Carlton side.

I hope that it can grow to a full comp in its own right in a few years

The standard is poor but the effort and commitment is exceptional. Loved the endeavour and most importantly, I loved the passion they had for the concept and the jumper. The top 3 or 4 players in each team are very good but the standard drops away significantly after that. Give it time though. The game will grow and the standard will improve with increased participation. Personally I loved watching it. Reminded me of suburban footy. Not high priced elite athletes but girls who know what its like to play the game for the love of it. Have no doubt, many AFL mens players wish the could still do the same.

Vescio is a star. Balanced, good hands off the deck and in the air. Bri Davey was exceptional as well. I loved the passion of Maddie Keryk. Her tackle stats would have been a Carlton record IMO. Also l enjoyed the interview with Jakobson. Her long standing love for the club was heartwarming.

I think it's great. And I know we all have to preface our thoughts with that.

What I've found nauseating is the commentary from areas of the media, other sports people, commentators etc about how inspiring this is for young girls.

This implication that somehow without the AFL females everywhere would be inanimate blobs stuck at home thinking 'if I only had something to do'... Devoid of dreams, inspiration or hope.

Never fear, we the AFL will help you with that.

OK im taking it to extremes.

But many of these players were already elite sports women in other fields. I'm thrilled that they get to play a sport they love. But this is not a trailblazing thing...Basketball, Cricket, soccer and numerous other (traditionally male dominated) sports have done great things. What the AFL do have is media dominance and established branding. They've used it well.

OK, the standard is pretty low. But I've watched Carlton post 2000 so I'm not that discerning. If I cared about quality alone I wouldn't follow west ham, and I sure wouldn't watch the A-League.

I think its fine but can we just pull back a little on the 'AFL give women hope' angle...?

Not sure why the negativity about the AFLW on here.

Sure, the standard was nowhere near that of the AFL, but so what? I love going to VFL games, and it's nothing to do with the standard being close to AFL, but it's the enjoyment of watching a contest and the social aspect of meeting friends at a game. I don't go to AFL games anymore because the cost is too high and I don't like the crowds, whereas attending an AFLW or VFL game (last night excepted) is a more intimate experience. Additionally, the commitment of the players is not dissimilar to the top league.

The good news is nobody has to watch AFLW, so if the standard's not your cup of tea, then don't watch or go.

As for people complaining about this supposedly only being a money-making exersize for the AFL, so what? If a person has their own business, they're doing it to make money. If someone works for a company, they are there to help that organisation make money.

That's their job: promote and expand the game. In order to subsidise the AFLW and have the AFL competition in general, they have to make money. Nowhere have I seen any communications from the AFL that the women's competition is the same standard as the men's, and nowhere have I seen any legislation that people have to watch the AFLW.

For me the AFLW is an opportunity for sportspeople like Darcy Vescio to gain a profile and to play in a more professional environment than what's previously been available.

So, if you don't like the standard of the AFLW, and you don't like it being promoted, then don't watch and there'll be no risk of any phallus or similar being shoved down your throat or anywhere else.
