The fact that he left shits me less than the people who say we "let him go".

Compo should never have come into it. The subjective nature of the compo is the major issue. If every club is on an even playing field salary cap wise, then the cap space created by losing a player to free agency should then be enough compensation. you now have X thousands of dollars in your cap. You now have that money to throw at other players, whether that is to retain current players or recruit from outside the club. The AFL have created a garbage system where some clubs get high compensation for a crocked player (collingwood/daisy) and others get SFA for a player that plays career best footy (Carlton/Waite) Just another example of incompetent administration and a competition completely skewed by unfair manipulation.

A player who kicked 300 career goals and was deemed worthy of 2 year contract by his new club should objectively trigger a 3rd round compo pick

Waite left because of our Club and Madhouse would not commit to a reasonable deal.

Waite has made comments that he would have stayed at Carlton had he had some commitment for 2 years and game time.

The fact that he is a better player at Norf is purely due playing in a much better team. And his discipline also improved due to less frustration of doing the hard work to burn off your opponent just to have your teammate kick it over your head or directly to your opponent or at your feet etc...

Waite still bleeds blue, probably more so than some of the posters on this site, so I hope he does well and comes back to the blues once he hangs up the boots.

That's all well and good but what is a reasonable deal for a plus 30 year old who was constantly injured on terrific contracts?

He was well looked after by Carlton for many years. His last contract with us was for three years on good coin, after already being injury prone. The club was right to expect him to give a bit back.

It seems Jarrads pain threshold is a bit better at the Kangas. Funny what having to earn respect does to some people.

feeling a bit depressed about the ex blues this week.
Whilst there was some mild justice in that Hampson didn't star, to see Grigg get a BOG (or close to it), Robbo get a BOG and Hendo get a team of the week for full back, added to the usual recent success of Betts and Waite is a little flattening.

At least Thomas was great this week...

This Waite compo thing is such a build up over nothing. The rules on the AFL website which were announced at the beginning of free agency clearly state compensation will be based on 2 criteria ONLY - Age (Waite was 30+when he left) & terms of NEW contract (he is on around 200k per year at north and it was only a 2 year deal). No one should have ever expected compensation. There is not one criteria for compensation which acknowledges player ability or past achievements.

As I recall, it wasn't the money but the length of the contract which was an issue for us. I think we wouldn't budge on 2 years, while North offered 3 years.

what I have been told is Waite is practically on the same wage as a second year player. He went to norf for security that we wouldn't offer. And at the time we were well within our rights to only offer 1 year + trigger for 2nd. Let's not pretend Waite was playing at this standard in 2014. In fact he spent some of 2014 in the VFL.

Credit to Norf for getting his mind & body right but at the time Waite was lazy and injury prone and over 30. Facing a rebuild - he's not the type we should've given a guaranteed 2 years too.

Not Waite's attitude though which was a big part of his problem at Carlton.
