MARC Murphy will be confirmed as Carlton captain for a fourth season.

The Blues’ off-season “reset” under new coach Brendon Bolton hasn’t extended to the club’s on-field leader, with Murphy given the nod to continue.

Bolton said he was “really open-minded” about the captaincy when he took over in November, but was impressed by the midfielder’s leadership qualities over summer.

In my mind - not really a decision as much as a need to fill a gap in the Communications calendar. I personally think they were a week late and it could have been made on Family Day. Anyway...as it is it's a bit of a nothing story.

Bigger question is does Murph hold the captaincy until retirement? (contract expires in 2018 when he's 31). Will they bring in Leading Teams to assist with a very young group coming through? I am very much in favour of the latter. Carlton has never really brought in leadership assistance for the playing group...they only really did it for the then coach's benefit (Ratten). Would be interested to hear Trigg and Bolton's views.

Cripps (or Weits) isn't ready yet, simple as that.

Cripps vs. Docherty you would think.

I may be wrong but I just don't see Doc as a genuine candidate. Not trying to bag him, he is a good player and clearly a leader, but I would have thought Cripps is way ahead of him.

So for me it is either Cripps soon, or Murphy and maybe even a Gibbs for the next few years, in which if this is the case then that allows time for Weits to throw his hat into the ring, assuming he turns into a good player and leader.

But hey stranger things have happened - it could be Doc !

Cripps next yr or the yr after surely.
The club needs a strong leader and usually is one of your best players, apart from the nick maxwell types out there. Cripps is both.

Marc murphy is one of the worst captains in the game. You cant run around like a pretty boy and be soft. North have realised that and jack z is in next season. Will be his last l reckon. Cripps already looks a better leader on field with the other players.

Simmo as VC is funny because he should've been captain from the beginning

I have zero tolerance for anyone who calls Marc Murphy soft. Couldn't be further from the truth.

Couldn't agree more. Plays with injury and gets tagged with little help from his teammates. Hopefully that will change this season.

I think his leadership was stifled under Malthouse and he showed he can be a good leader in the second half of last season.

He was crunched many many times in 2015 - he & Bell shouldered a massive load with the disappearance of others.

And he got right up again.

Captain for sure.

Can only hope we can play him a bit more forward in future years - goal sneak written all over him.

Murphy is definitely not soft, but he doesn't dish it out or enforce physicality like hodge or selwood...

Yeah...I'm not so sure I want a 180cm elite ball winning midfielder 'dishing it out'.

Just so it's clear - when I voice my dislike for Murphy being captain, am I not trying to call him soft. I don't think he's soft. I just don't think he makes a good captain.

Even Docherty in an article for tomorrow's Herald Sun says Simpson is the 'heart and soul' of the club. This Murphy and Simpson thing is like Mitchell and Hodge - except Hawthorn realised they were wrong and weren't too proud to admit they were wrong and fix it.

I also hope he doesn't play for as many free kicks as he usually does.
