What they deserve and what they're chasing (potentially in lieu of team success) aren't one in the same; nor what we were initially discussing.

Your initial contention was that we should chase free agents who display consistently good work ethic.

I said that displaying consistently good work ethic is probably at odds with the character displayed in chasing more money for individual gain.

You countered by saying that the consistently decent players "deserved" the big bucks.

I'm saying that what they deserve, and what they'd receive to come to Carlton aren't one in the same. It's more than likely their original club are willing to pay them what they deserve. Dale Thomas has consistently good work ethic and deserves X amount, we're probably paying him X+Y for example.

Guaranteed either Gibbs or Murphy will be gone end of the year.
Prob Gibbs, although his long term contract would scare off a few clubs.
Imagine getting rid of both ? Could that happen ?
Id also look at trading Walks if we can get a 2nd rounder.
Id keep Yazz, Kreuzer and Hendo.

Is this backed by sources

No, just what I see as logic.

Gibbs and Murphy are the only two who will get us anything decent in terms of trades (1st round picks or young guns).
Walks would do well in a team pushing for a flag. A Dal Santo type deal will be good for both parties.

2015 - We ll finish bottom 3-4 this year. That's two picks inside top 21 at least. Add 1st round pick for Gibbs/Murphy + hopefully early/mid 2nd Rounder for Walks, and that would make 4 picks in top 30ish.

2016 - Finish Bottom 3-4 + trading Gibbs/Murphy = again 3 picks inside top 20ish.

That'd made a total of 7 picks inside the top 30 over two seasons.
Hello Rebuild.. SOS and his merry men would be rubbing his hands at that prospect.

Wont be letting go Hendo as he's our best KPP.
Wont be letting go Kreuz as when fit, he's by far our best Ruck.
Yazz is still young enough to still be here when we re decent again.
Cripps looks a beauty, but early days.
Clem looks like he'll be damaging when he turns his bulk into solid muscle.
Not sold on BB and Whiley.
Would keep Judd and Simmo one more year as they re attitudes will help development of the kids.

Lol. Early 2nd rounder for Walker? Comparisons with Dal Santo? ROFLMAO.

Check out Dal Santo's career and compare it with Walker's. As much as I love him, he comes nowhere near Dal with output over the past decade.

Dal Santo has played midfield his entire career, or pretty much 90% of it. Walker is comparable on raw talent alone but, like so many players on our list, has not had a consistent run in a defining position on the field.

Ludicrous.

The original club may not be paying said player what he deserves due to its TPP and the quality of its list.

Maybe - which then allows for 17 other clubs to also offer what they see fit. Stupid free market economics.

Anyway, back to your original point - I reckon far more goodwill is gained and fan engagement retained by trading Murphy and or Gibbs than trading in <insert gun player here>, and probably allows more freedom/flexibility in achieving our original goals of turning the list over.

Not if we're offering to pay their salaries in our TPP as a means of meeting our minimum requirements and also getting a better return for them, by luring clubs in the hunt for a flag into the market they wouldn't otherwise be able to enter as their TPP is almost at the max.

The sum of all parts is a win I feel.

lose Murphy + paying his salary = better draft pick/competition for his services, not retaining a hack like Warnock to meet TPP
lose Murphy + not paying his salary = slightly lower draft pick/less competition, probably keeping Warnock another year unless we end up going out and getting a free agent we don't need when we're bottoming out.

Dogs paying large amount of Griffen's contract this year is a prime example.

Worth noting as well we only have Yarran as a flight risk free agent next year. Not as if we need to have a huge warchest saved up as we did 2 years ago.

Being a bit kind to Ellard there Duke, actually I saw a show on Foxtel the other night where scientists grew a new human ear on the back of a rat. Thing was walking around the cage with an ear growing out of it. The only use I can see for a few of the blokes on that list is potentially so we could use their backs to grow new feet for Kreuzer/Giles etc

Just call Shane Charters and destroy the paperwork.
