Geez Juddy must have wished he had retired and was sitting in the commentary box rather than out on the paddock. Well done Clem Smith, young lad in his 2nd game showed more fight than 1/2 of the rest of the list combined. Thought everitt tried hard, Casboult straightened us up but, just as with Richmond last week we have no plan B. Sit a loose man behind the ball and hit us on the rebound and we have no idea. Wood tried hard but was massacred by Natinui. For a team with mostly taggers we have no defensive mids at all.

I don't blame Mick, I reckon the club needs to sign him for another 3 and tell him to build a team. What we have right now is a shambles and a coach trying to protect his job with stop gaps. We need to back Mick, give him security and tell him and SOS to fix the list and win games. It can be turned around but we need to have some balls. Geelong, Hawthorn, Collingwood all went through hard times building a list. Bomber Thompson and Clarkson all had people calling for their heads in the first couple of years but their clubs stuck fat.

We need to find leaders, even if they aren't the best players. We need blokes that will not accept mediocrity and will give others a spray if need be. I hate this whole 'not vocal but leads by example' bullshit. After 15 years commanding soldiers in the Australian Army I think I know a little bit about Leadership. Integrity and a good example are important elements of leadership but when the sh1t hits the fan somebody needs to stand up, say follow me lads and make stuff happen. It can be easy to blame others and say you have done your best but real leaders understand that the team is everything and that responsibility is shared. Results mean more than excuses. They used to say in the Army you only move as fast as the slowest member, on pack marches etc in units with poor leadership the slow guys dropped off the back of the pack and the young fit leaders finished first then waited at the finish line for their men to come in. In the best lead units the leaders finished last because they were at the back driving those slower members to catch up, they knew the job was only done when the last guy finished, not when they finished. It was one thing to be the fittest guy and give a good example, it was something else alltogether to drop back and drive those underperforming slugs forward with force of will because you knew the job was only done when the team was done, not when you were done! If it was a timed pass/fail thing you would see good leaders finish, get their pass and then turn around and sprint back out onto the route to drive the slower blokes to the line. After a while with good leadership everyone knows what is expected, nobody wants to be the slug that has to be driven by others, everyone lifts their game and does what is needed because fear of letting down the team is greater than fear of any physical consequence. With ANZAC day approaching many often wonder why men ran to certain death etc in charges. It wasn't because they were afraid of being court-martialled and shot it was because they were afraid of being the weak link that let their mates down, they didn't want to be the weak link in the chain.

Bit long, sorry for the waffle, very disappointed with last night was hoping for much better. I thought it was good for Mick to tell it straight in the presser. We are no longer a 'Big 4' club, we are a bottom 4 or 5 club and we need better leaders. I reckon we did the right thing getting rid of Garlett/Robnson and co and I think time will prove that but there will be hard times ahead!

Moving stuff 2nd.

I don't want to bag out some of our leaders/ leadership group but it's pretty obvious they are not moving hearts and minds and as a result failing to create the mindset required for group desire for success....I hope Anzac Day moves them.

Last year we draft Boekhurst (not playing) and Rainbow (HBF). We traded in Tutt, Dick, Jones, Whiley and Jacksh. I still have hopes for these, but with Foster and Fields, we brought in 7 mature players. Don't tell me the coach doesn't have a role in this.

Of the 46 on the list, 25 have come in under Malthouse's watch. At least 12 of these were mature agers or on their second club. This is not a club rebuilding, it is a club that is looking for success. Malthouse took over thinking we were close. He said so.

We have gone backwards under Malthouse. Massively. And people on here still blame Ratts.

On here, Ratts was responsible for drafting when he was coach but Malty is still trying to rid the club of his gameplan three years later. Laughable.

I was ropeable with our drafting for what it meant. We drafted/traded for now. Not for the future. I am not against smart trading (the Jacksh deal was a good one) but filthy on the drafting of Boekhurst. Nothing against him but you don't take a 21 year old kid who has played one season of WAFL footy with your first pick. Not unless he is the 'missing' piece of the puzzle such as Taylor at Geelong or Smith at Hawthorn.

And to crown it, he can't even get a game!

We haven't stockpiled picks or used them wisely. Not for a long time. If ever.

I wouldn't be so dirty if I knew Malthouse would do the right thing and plan for a future. Punt on Menzel, Buckley, Cripps, Graham, Whiley, Jacksch etc and play them all every week. Drop the taggers and tell the players to get the ball for a change. That won't happen. He will coach for a contract and blame the club for the performances.

Every man for himself.

Good post fmurphy30.
I'm still filthy on the Boekhorst selection at pick #19 - it was all about the "now" and not the future. Furthermore it wasn't like he is the missing piece of the puzzle as you stated.
Was Jones and Tutt ever going to help us become a top 4 side? NO - so why did we recruit them?

Gibbs had 10 tackles. He may not be the leader people want him to be, but to say he doesn't try is just rubbish.

I had to go out at the start of the second quarter and was shocked to see the score in the third quarter.

So stopped halfway through the second again.

Any chance we might might be running out of legs?

I get that, but he is now at a point in his career where he can take care of the KPIs, and then look to bring others into the game either with his possessions or with his voice and body work.

He needs to help carry more of the load so others will kick on. It's not a team of 22 front runners, it's a team laced with boys learning how to become men within the context of a football field.

The board can't afford to be seen to be bottoming out.
Financially it's crumbling
Membership and pulling power is evaporating
Club can't afford in its mind to go to the members with the plan...
We need to start again..
They're the same people that brought us to this here place.
So we're in for mixed messages...

Check out the Dons thread Cimm, I've posted some of the game time percentages; they're a bit lax at the moment.

Gibbs isn't 100%, and others are putting in soft shifts considering they are playing below AFL percentages for their roles. Others are running out the game manfully.

Everitt played about 94% for example; Simmo was similar.

I guess it must be hard to bring others into the game when the guy with a shoulder injury has obviously had his arms wrapped around an Eagle in possession of the ball for most of the night. How great would it be if Gibbs was our biggest concern?

Gibbs would be a better captain than murph. Last time Murphy did anything of note was against port in round 22 , 2013.. That's what we expect, he can't handle the heat. Shouldn't have been made captain yet who else could we have had.?

That doesn't stop him from opening his mouth.

I don't have quarter-by-quarter stats on minutes played, but WCE definitely rotated through the interchange more than us in the second half.

The jones trade pisses me off a lot too. Why did we actively seek out one of the worst forwards in the comp??
This in turn caused us to give up our 3rd rounder, which I'm certain we could have used of Boekhurst. As no other team would be stupid enough to waste a first or second rounder on a 21y/o former volleyball we who has played 1 season on proper footy. Instead we used our first round pick, because he was our missing piece. Don't get me wrong I think BB has some good qualities and I hope he succeeds, but first round was bull. Plus im sure you noticed I really think Jones is a terrible player. Serenity now.

We've put up with the old guard of the board for a long time, now at least they're saying the right things but then action speaks louder than words. We have a lot of work to do
As were crap on a management level...

What do we make of our esteemed Captain Marc Murphy? When the chips are down your leaders are the ones who set the standard. What standard of performance/effort / leadership is Murphy showing right now?

The last time Murphy had swagger and authority on the football field is 2011. Great to see him taking charge when were on the ropes, those short 15 metre passes backwards are why I watch footy

Every department has issues I’m not disputing that or arguing that point what I do know is that micky is in charge of the playing group and is responsible for the results
If you think that the board has drawn up the insipid game plan for us you are sadly mistaken
I don't think think they tell mick to play the boundary, the bomb, 4/5 taggers or pick the side
If you believe that micky didn’t have a major say in our drafting and recruiting you would again be wrong
Last year we used the excuse of the majority of the list having off season surgery but this year we are supposed to be fitter, do you see it, I don’t, again mickys friend
If you don’t think that inspiring your players is a coach’s responsibility, then I don’t think that you have been involved in any sporting club at any level anywhere in the world but let me assure you that's exactly what he is there for
and he is accountable and responsible for the players and their on field performances an no one else

this is his third year and has made an abundance of personnel changes and major decisions so he has had plenty of time to show some type, any type of improvement but we haven't seen it
FGS he even made the excuse that these players are new and haven't played together (WTF)
one excuse after another
!@#$ off mick
