Interesting comments from Alan Richardson

ST KILDA won't take any shortcuts in its rebuild, with coach Alan Richardson confirming the cellar-dwelling Saints are unlikely to consider recruiting free agents for at least "a couple of years".

The Saints, who against North Melbourne on Saturday slumped to their 11th consecutive loss, are committed to a long-term regeneration of their list via the draft, Richardson said on The Sunday Footy Show.

"Philosophically, we won't look at free agency for a couple of years; we'll be going to the draft," he said.

"We think that the model that we've decided to go down is the right way and that is to get in young players, to be patient, to make sure that we get games into these young players.

Did Mick think things through when he decided to go down the free agent path?

We bemoan the lack of talent but MM gave up an earlyish pick via his recruitment of Thomas - preventing us from bringing extra young talent in! WTF was he thinking with the Thomas recruitment?

We were told these list management blunders would stop once Ratten was gone!

Too early to say whether thomas was a mistake. Give him a proper preseason first. ALSO Thomas was brought in for other reasons as well. He shows leadership, and aggression something that our introverts , including our captain need.

The old leadership one...Melbourne got Daniel Cross....I bet he brings a lot of leadership and sets a good example on the training track.

Don't think he cost a lot though.

A club serious about rebuilding doesn't recruit Thomas... and doesn't sign Gibbs for 5 years

Different season... some off field personnel changes... same shit club

Retaining gibbs is fine - very consistent, durable and plays at a reasonably high level.

Thomas was a mistake IF we were looking to rebuild - virtually 2 years out with ankle injuries, no guarantees that he can recover back to is previous peaks (or how long that might take). Way too risky a selection for what he offers/expected age when we finish rebuild - made worse by costing the betts compensation pick.

IF we were looking to contend, then the thomas selection is fine - however given our record, that then draws into question the performance of the coach...

I like Mick as a coach but the way he treats people is disgraceful. Should pull his head in and show some respect. I cringe listening to him in press conferences. Not a good representative of the club IMO.

He's just a grumpy old man.

I'm quickly loosing what little respect I had remaining for him.

They might get 31 people watching instead of the regular 17.

oh good, so we'll definitely be getting Lingy then?

i notice the way they've worded in the HUN implies Timmy Lane got on his soapbox and ranted about MM's treatment of his little girl..
but no. As I mentioned elsewhere, it was not him, but after a caller complained about the presser, Caro wondered aloud how he'd have liked his Christy spoken to like that, and then directly asked Tim how he felt.
So.....quelle surprise..beat up.

The media loves to create its own news. Due to the bad season they think MM is a prime target. I heard the post match presser and MM is not unreasonable - the questions were silly. Secondly teams dont want cameras in the rooms at half time. Its all about creating controversy.

Roos traded pick 23 for Bernie Vince. Matt Crouch won a rising star nomination.

I guess Vince's leadership is better than Cross'.

Alan Richardson will win a million flags because he is calm and collected.

Mick is always a target and in fairness he has brought a lot of it on himself by the way has treated a lot of people over a long period of time.

Vince is actually delivering - I don't think he came to Melbourne with any concerns about his fitness. ;)

Alan Richardson may not win any flags but he's smart enough not to go down the free agent path at this point. What was MM thinking? Each week "we don't have enough young talent" yet he blew the chance to help rebuild the list. You know, there are a lot of good players you can recruit with picks in the late teens/20s - give our recruiters a chance. ;)
