Who do you think Buttifant might make a positive change to?

Doubtful he could have that much impact in one pre-season.

I doubt it also, but Buttifant did put players in their place.

You always hope that for some that were forced to exceed their own expectations, realized that............"Hey, this isn't too bad. Didn't know I could do that"

We do have a few on our list that floated through training in recent years............not any more.

Example? Yarran, Lucas and Bootsma. Only three but a big three.

All should be first 22 players on the abilities they have.
Some of their (particularly Lucas and Yarran's) efforts at VFL level in the last two years were disgraceful. Nothing short of disgraceful.

Thanks Harker.

If Lucas and Yarran (don't know that much about Bootsma) put in what top flight AFL footballers could be expected to, they would be elite. No doubt about it, irrespective of Synbad's rants.

Lucas in particular showed glimpses last year, so just maybe this year. Otherwise at the end of the year we will get nothing for a boy we all know (except Synners) should have been a good footballer.

Lucas's running patterns are of a high quality (See McLean) and he can run all day.
He was our best one-touch player (Thomas and Menzel may be better)
Just doesn't push himself hard enough. Had endured a couple of injury prone years but he's better than his 2013 output.

Yarran also doesn't push hard enough. Not everyone is going to be a Curnow in this department but if he had 50% of the mental strength Curnow has..............wow.

Bootsma has been looking somewhat more committed this year to date.
Can only hope that fatherhood may click open some buttons for him. I'd love to see him lose i on the field, even once. Reckon it may do him a world of good.

..interesting about Lucas.. ..have heard that he 'coasts' at training and at times in vfl through reports on here, but his running patterns and capacity always seemed very high.. ..so if he can [and has] improved upon what he already has displayed, then Lucas could be a very good player.. ..i agree, i've had high hopes on Lucas,, and i think he can be a very good player for us..

Just needs to show show a little more aggression and intensity. Polishing his kicking skills wouldn't go astray either.

Diamond in the rough.

Yeah, Lucas reminds me somewhat of Nick Stevens. To agree with the sentiment here, if he works as hard as Stevo, he'll be a gem

If Lucas could be half as effective as Nick Stevens this year then we'd be onto something. Has a way to go yet to even get to that level though.

if he could kick as well as Stevens - that would be a big step forward

^^^

..he [lucas] actually has a very good kick on him, at times.. ..but he lacks consistency with the skill.. ....he reminds me a lot of yarran in this regard, both can execute a perfect pass or slot a hard goal in one passage of play, and then stuff up a pass under no pressure or miss a simple goal in the next passage of play.. ..yarran really should be better at this by now, a higher level of overall kicking skill, more time on the list/games experience as well.. ..lucas is behind in terms of development, but we'll be wanting to see him improve on consistency, which i believe he can do.. ..he does cover a lot of ground when he does play, that may effect his kicking as it seems to do to those that run and run and run [i.e simmo]..

..lucas is one that i fell will fit into MM's style.. ..he runs all day, and pairs running capacity with smart running patterns, he knows where to run and when to run.. ..will spread into space all game long.. ..he is also versatile, yes he is an outside runner but he's also a good overhead mark and has natural HF craft..

..his tackling is an issue - did we focus on tackling over pre-season?, cos it was said we minimalised the focus last year and it showed thru the season across the team i felt..
