There is a lot of discussion now that our season is effectively over on the list for 2013.

Along with the coach I believe that this is the MOST vital issue to address.

IMO we have some real talent on our list. We have some match winners and some class.

My issue is the depth and injuries have really shown us up in the area. However, I also believe we aren't far off and as such this years trade period will be absolutely crucial.

This is what I would be looking at:

1. Put the three ruckman on the market and hope to get a really great offer on one. e.g. Hampson to GC for Caddy or Warnock to GWS for Greene?
2. Really cut our list of average players in the system for a while. Bower, Russell, Thornton, White, Kerr, Heyne, Carter etc.
3. Free agency is now in. Can we get a big bodied mid to help us NOW!
4. Trades. We don't have much apart from the ruckman as detailed above or an early pick. Can we get some good young talent to add?
5. Should be a strong draft. 3-4 good kids added to the list. Please do not go with the speculative third rounder again. I like Rowe and Duigan but why did we not use a late or rookie pick? Poor IMO.
6. Mature aged. Now becoming more vital. Is there a Barlow, Magner, Zorko out there? Im sure there is.

This October/November could well determine a top 4 spot in 2013.

*Above was my original post to start this topic in July 2012. Not much has changed??? :?

Hardly any revelations that warrant a "told you so" in there psych.
Where's the killer blow?

We know we're going to go in hard. We knew that 4 months ago which is a good starting point. Let's hope we've already laid the necessary ground work.

Will be interesting as to who are named in the first list cull. I'd suggest Davies, Joseph, Dale, Collins, Mitchell and possibly Duigan may be very nervous right now.

Harks, it's not I told you so it's more of nothing much has changed.

My biggest criticism is the lack of turnover of players over the past few years. We have recruited poorly BUT we haven't made tough decisions on players that should of been made over the past few years.

but u want s okeefe to stay???

O'Keefe should stay. The games for the NB's at the end of this year he was averaging over 20 possessions. The injury issue this year was not tissue related but an infection following out of season surgery. With at least 8 changes we can afford to include Curnow, Bell and O'Keefe on the list. That still gives us 5 picks in the draft.

I would also rookie Buckley and McCarthy to create more space.

Players who have been on the rookie list for a couple of years so need to be either delisted or included on the primary list, can the contract be for 1 year only? eg Bell, Curnow O'Keefe

Bell was promised promotion last year or else we were going to lose him to Essendon*, so he's onto the primary.

Curnow has earned his dues. He goes onto the primary.

O'Keeffe is the real tricky one. He was tracking so well in the pre-season and MM liked him but what to do now?

Be very interesting to see what happens with Curnow.

MM doesn't generally use taggers and has stated clearly that he has gone down this path as with the list he has it's the best chance we have of winning.

If we get some real midfield depth into the club will he stay because as ball winner his ball use is deplorable. Also, to keep him he will need to be upgraded.

I'm with you there Synners. Tough, running, smart on ballers is what we need.

Not much... has a body that promises the world but a very slow football brain... that's why he gets caught htb so often

In saying that, I still think there's a diamond in the rough with this guy

I think we have the right man at the helm to leave us in better shape and make some hard calls.
If we could get thomas, adams, selwood and shuey then we will be better next year.
We also must Rookie Kane Lambert and try and get Mitch Hallahan
I think we will be big players in the trade period.
Interesting times ahead.

A spot on the list should be viewed as gold. Unfortunately the players have watched the spot price devalue of late.

I'd throw Garlett into the trade if possible list and see what is offered up. One of my favourites but is terribly disappointing in the red hot games.

Draft 2-3 gaelic football players from Ireland.
Most of them turn out to be ok AFL players.

Bring in Jesaulenko, Harmes, Johnston, Buckley, Williams, Pearce and Bradley (in their prime) by cyberborg mutation of DNA.

Delist trade etc Waite, Armfield, Hampson and others.

If there is room in the salary cap - mutate Rod Ashman too.

3AW reported that Buckley, McCarthy and Mitchell will not be offered new contracts.
I can understand McCarthy and Mitchell as they have been given 3 years but a bit surprised about Buckley.

Yep. Like to see Henderson up forward next year. Maybe Watson will play there as well and Rowe will given more opportunities. I hope as a defender.

Can Waite, Henderson & the resting ruckman be a genuine option next season?

Jamison/White at FB, McInnes/Bootsma as third tall and possibly Rowe/Watson at CHB.

I think we need to try and get a Jaksch or Bruce to fill CHB or even Tippett.

The rest needs to be spent on mids.

The reality with what we have it will take 2-3 years minimum to really rebuild this list.

Our recruiting and decision making has send our club backwards. On sen this morn they are saying what agood list they have and the next generation of swans are very good. IF they (our REC dep) dont get this draft wright we are going to be stuffed again.

Given Micks comments about our lack of midfield options do we really think Buckley & Lucas will be around next season?

Weren't even in consideration by years end.

How many changes will there be to the list and how many "tough, running, smart on ballers" will there be available? I can't imagine the gods of the midfield and the Blues aligning 8+ times.

Mick himself acknowledged the chances of topping up our lust to the required level of kids won't happen in one offseason.
