Yarran's problem isn't his ability, its his mentality.

It'll be somewhat devastating to see someone so "promising" go, but if he doesn't want to apply himself week in, week out, he's got to go.

If Footy Classified are right and Betts wants upward of half a million a year... he can go too. He's not worth it certainly not on this year's form. I love the bloke but you either sacrifice to be part of success or you don't have a spot, and Betts isn't in the top 10 at the club at the moment (which is an indictment on him).

There will be a lot of changes at the end of the year ,I have overrated our list ,and so have the CARLTON heirachy ,our recruiting has been a shambles .Who is at fault the previous coach ,recruiting guys ,we have stuffed up. Richmond and Essendon* have passed us with their lists
Who was our last rising star nomination ,can someone please tell me that wasnt a no. 1 pick
We cant blame Malthouse not yet anyway,lets see what happens Next Year .
Finally Yarran and Betts both need to have a good look at themselves ,I hope they play this week and show what they are really capable of

It's hardly surprising that those to have gone backwards are the ones who have had question marks over their commitment or intensity in the past.

We knew when we got Mick that he wasn't going to be the players' mate or accept "cruising", which undoubtedly a lot of our boys have been accustomed to, leaving us in the hole we're in now. I think we're now seeing which players are truly in it for the long haul, and those that want to take their bat and ball home.

We should demand that inbetween the money, attention and adoration, that every player on this list recognises the privilege of wearing this jumper and never leave the ground thinking they could've done more. This is what the top teams demand and this is why we're so far behind.

Hopefully Betts sees the light of day because he still has a bit to offer imo.

Yarran is good at one thing only. Running. But what he does when he finishes running is still a glaring weakness... his delivery is regularly not brilliant. He regularly gets caught. He regularly misses crucial shots for goal.

He also does not impact the game regularly enough. In respect to Garlett who regularly impacts in all areas of the game that Yarran doesn't, he is far behind. Rioli gets bashed for having 15 minutes of impact a game. Yarran is lucky to have 5 minutes of impact a week. Simply not good enough.

Betts has had a bad year, which is why he gets off because he's been great up until 2013. I hope if one goes, its Yarran over Betts.

I'd also argue we have the worst captain in the league. If the captain sets the benchmark of application regardless of ability, it says everything about why we are where we are.

On effort, Simpson, Walker and Tuohy would be more worthy captains in that order.

I don't know about Murph's effort, but certainly the benchmark he sets in intensity and presence is pretty lacking.

The sad thing about Yarran is that he has so much natural ability and talent but no 'killer instinct' or mental ability. To think there are so many guys playing quality AFL standard football who probably have half the talent but twice the drive.

You would have to think that if he doesn't have that now he never will !

Can't see him being at the Blues next year and he will only have himself to blame.

Hugely disappointed in Murph even though he is coming back from a serious facial injury. He looks soft, slow and at time not interested. He should never have been made captain in my opinion for many reasons and the icing on the cake for me was after a recent win he wasnt even singing the team song in the huddle and was totslly disinterested !

For me Henderson should be our next Captain !!!

I don't think it is Betts who has asked for that money but his agent as Eddie has said all along he wanst to stay at the Blues. Given he has been so good for us for so long I am willing to overlook one bad season interrupted by suspension and injury. Also it is possible the 600k is the offer from the Crows and just for the first year (front loading a contract to scare off any other parties interested) and the money then drops down to $300k per year over 3 years.

I think the fall out out of Yarran being played as a sub is still being felt as it doesn't appear that he is giving 100%. It appears that he has lost interest and is not doing the hard work we would have expected and is being demanded by the coach. We know he doesn't yet have the engine to play on ball but that is where he should be targetting instead he is playing as a receiver on the outside and not chasing hard enough when the oppostion has the ball.

Well looks like the penny dropped in 2012 that we need to draft mids

Completely agree that modern football is about mids

1 ruck
3 key forwards, and they don't all have to be tall
3 key defenders

The rest are all mids - some who can play HBF like Scotland, Walker, Gibbs, and some can play HFF/FP

Our recruiting has been deplorable. It took us too long to realize what the modern game is about and now teams like Port are going past us.

I could name 20 odd players who ought to go. You can't do that in one off season, do it will take years to flush out the list.

Our list has too many plodding, defensive, slow, unskilled taggers, and too many soft FPs. Very imbalanced

Club are out of their mind if they don't take the opportunity to let Betts go. We save $400k there which means can get 3 FAs assuming what Swann says about having room for 2 FAs is right. What's out there is another question though ...

Then trade Yarran and Warnock for picks, and go to the draft with a good hand and get mids, mids, and mids.


Hit the nail on the head.


Where's that leave us in regards to the three key forwards and three key defenders? Waite and Jamison are just about past it and Casboult and Rowe just aren't good enough. That leaves two at the most.

The introduction of MM was always going to 'ruffle a few feathers'. So I'm not surprised at all where we are currently at.

The equation was simple - those that conformed to 'his way' would survive and those that didnt would be moved on. I think this hard line approach was required.

2013 was always going to be a year that allowed MM to make his mind up on certain players. It would seem by the actions of some players that perhaps these decisions have already been made and players affected may already know of their fate.

One thing I'll say about Mick, and I'm not sure this is a good thing or bad thing, is he seems to be quite unforgiving

Watson fouled up badly in the NAB Cup and didn't get a look in til 15 or so weeks later

Yarran was lax in defense in nAB Cup and hasn't played there since

Duigan and Laidler clearly ran over Micks cat - they've been treated like the plague

He is an old stager Mick and if he sees repeated flaws he will draw a line through your ass

Hard to disagree so long as these are repeated balls ups by players. Certainly Watson stuffed up 3 times in as many minutes in the NAB Cup game, it was seriously concerning the errors he made, and Yazz too was just nowhere near his man in NAB Cup games playing down back

Mick arguably has drawn a line through 206 too for repeatedly doing SFA around the ground
