Found it amusing at the game how the Lions supporters were celebrating much like it was the real thing. Then I remembered that if I thought they looked ridiculous, then our lot must have looked the same, if not worse when we won it both times last decade. Though with the success they've had in the last 12 years, surely they can't have forgotten what it really feels like.

Onto our game.

Our forwardline was non-existent. Hampson is not a forward. Never has been, never will be. Couldn't catch a cold. Been in the system for years now and season 2013 is as big a year for him than any other. Make or break.

Have said all along that our forward line will be our undoing in finals. Tonight was a Mickey Mouse final but it's a taste of what's to come if things don't change up forward.

totes agree, more than happy for him to ease into the season and peak for the end, as age wearies him so will the length of the season, and if we have to sacrifice his use a bit during the year so we have the best of him for september, so be it imo

Good showing by Brisbane - too good for us on the night - if they have a good run with injury they'll play finals.

Lots of room for improvement for our midfield engine who will come good - worried about our lack of ability to shut down the key forward types (Petrie Walker Brown et al...).

We desperately need Waite to stand up.

Not sure about Walker, Lucas and Jamo.

I like Walkz

but geeeeez he is a very selfish footballer and needs to begin to do the team things.

Its a trait in alot of our players

and Lucas .. the early pick that cant kick...he loops the ball like a tennis player with huge top spin ... and without the accuracy

What the hell is that???

Most times the whistle blew the players stopped and looked confused and had to wait for the umpire to know whose free it was.

It's not helped much by supposed hard men like Jonathan Brown who shamelessly played for and won two free kicks in about 5 minutes.

After giving away that free kick to White, they showed a close up of Merrett who was saying - either to a teammate or one of the umps - "I have no idea what's a free any more". Strangely enough the replay showed him clearly clobber White in the face, but the Ump had paid it for in the back.

The umpiring was atrocious when Carlton was still in the game at the beginning of the 3rd quarter- Tuohy's key weakness is giving away pointless free kicks. One to Jonathan Brown for the slightest of arm brazes on Brown's shoulder. The willingness of umpires to give free kicks for this type of stuff means people like Tuohy have to be even more careful.

Then Jonathan Brown got another one when he was sliding to the ground- Henderson slid beside him and not on top - but that was also paid as "in the back". Poor decision again and no use of common sense from the umpires. Two quick goals at the beginning of 3rd quarter and I thought the game was gone at that point. Brown had "led them".

Still, Voss mocking Carlton prior to the game by saying it would be great to play "a top 4 side" clearly indicates there is a lot of ammunition out there aimed at Carlton. We are seen as being a big scalp without producing anything worthwhile at all in over 10 years.Where is the evidence that Carlton will even finish in the finals? I don't see it. Will be lucky to scrape in 5th to 8th. Top 4 ..dreaming.

If anything, Brisbane will finish higher on the ladder than Carlton this year- where is all the media love-in for them?

The forward line is atrocious. We need Laidler to provide that steel in defence. And hopefully we get good years out of Gibbs, Bell, Nick Graham, Menzel and Yarran. I am hoping they have good years. Otherwise I see another depressing year ahead to add to all the other depressing years from seasons past.

Would you consider putting Walker in defence and freeing up Yarran for the forward line/midfield? Or is it too late to play with structures?

Yarran is wasted at times in the back half as they drag him right back out of the half back line. I think he is the key "team-lifter", but playing on the last line of defence isn't going to do it.

I like Lucas... as he runs and carries. One of the few who can do it. Would like to see him closer to goal though - as he is a good shot at goal. Last year against Richmond he won the match basically in that last quarter.

kind of like dane beams does over at collingwood

we have too many show ponies with terrible work ethic

We were given a complete armchair ride by the umps last night. They'll realise this and adjust for the home and away season.

Glad i went out last night and missed the game . 1 goal in half a game of footy is ordinary at any time .
Went home at half time by the looks of it

The Mark of Cain were awesome last night
What a great Aussie band

Anyway obviously didnt see the game but some supporters on here have no idea

We simply arnt good enough
Too many guys cant kick the ball
reading the posts we turned the ball over too easily
where have I heard that before
Too many flash in the pan footballers who dont do the team things
I just hope MM drops these blokes and doesnt treat them like kids gloves like our previous coach

And for what its worth Murphy too me is not a great choice as captain

I really would like to have seen Duigan or even Henderson as captain

From watching on TV it appeared that the Lions worked a lot harder than us so I'm not overly worried about the result.
Still the same old problems however with a lack of a key forward and getting beaten in the clearances.
I know it was Judd's first game but he wasn't moving all that well.

Been saying for ages, put Yarran on a wing. What are his strengths

- run and carry
- speed
- elusiveness
- elite kick

Last night he was dragged back to the last line of defence and those strengths were lost

Worse, his weaknesses of losing contact with his opponent was exposed. Goals resulted.

That was funny. The ump kept pointing the wrong direction to make it worse.

Kane Lucas.... Another Wayne Hughes special gone wrong.

A high draft pick who is very selfish, cant kick and hardly ever makes proper decisions... And he's been in the AFL system for 3 years!! And to top if off he's a Squib Master.

Will be givin a chance to prove himelf to MM, but Mick will tire of Lucas's constant sqibbing and selfishness, and he ll use him as trade bait at the end of the year.

Still unsure on Yarran this pre-season, he can look to be care less at most times, but I know his best is a couple of steps above.

One thing for sure is we won't be playing a forward line of White, Walker, Casboult, Hampson too often without Jeffie and Eddie both playing.

I think Mick was testing how that structure would go and wasn't too fussed that Brisbane was simply putting numbers back to clean up the spoils.

Simmo was either seriously stuffed in the last quarter or has a horrid game by foot. His kicking out of the backline in the last quarter lacked effort.
