As I mentioned in an earlier post, the coach has his footprint all over this. My take is he is challenging a few of the more established players and Waite ought to be one of those. Malthouse's style appears to be very different from last year's coach. Supporters have asked for more *%#@ in our players (read The Dominator, Harmes, Wow Jones type) and Malthouse just might be the man who can nurture that.

1) I was very happy to see leadership group trimmed to 5 players - more accountable; more responsive; more effective
2) I would be disappointed if they pick joint-captains, but think that v unlikely
3) I think it is obvious that Waite & Duigan will not be captain. Happy with any of the other 3
4) My preference is Murphy because the upside is greater. I doubt Carrazzo or Simpson can go to another level but they will maintain their 100% effort irrespective of whether they are captain. However, I reckon Murphy has the potential to go up a notch as captain and, if he does so, will be able to drag more of the others with him.

So many times we've lost games of footy and i've heard supporters complain about the 'pretty boys' who care more about their hair than the pride of the guernsy. Supporters have been very critical of players not bleeding for the club, not being passionate for the club, not having that mongrel aspect to their game and being ruthless competitors. Jarrad Waite is one bloke who is clearly passionate about the club. I remember after Vin's passing in 2003 how important it was for Jarrad to represent the club on the field the following week and i remember seeing how significant it was for Jarrad to pass his fathers game tally for the club.
Personally, i'm thrilled that a player as passionate about the footy club as Jarrad is, will be a part of our leadership group in 2013!

Perhaps we'll see a little more effort in preseason next year. We had a shocking preparation this year.

Suggests that Duigan may have more of a role at senior level next year than I thought he would.

Great move involving Waite in the leadership group.
He is our X factor.
When he plays he plays well and is our focal point in forward line.
He is a lead up forward and also handles pack and one out situations, what more can you ask for?
Despite what some might say to me he is a KP, 194cm and mobile has held down our forward line when he isn't injured, which has been his biggest challenge.
He is the only one that throws his weight around and does it well despite some reports of brain fades (if it suits compare Judds suspension record with Waites).
He also brings the smalls into the game and eases pressure from other tall’s as he’s usually is taken by the best defender.
With the youngsters coming through and hopefully injury free this will assist him in the load he has been carrying and this will curtail some of his misplaced frustration and aggression but hopefully not diminish it as we need it from our leaders.
As we have seen in the last few rounds with the assistance of Casboult to relieve some pressure as a lone KP he will relish the freedom and also thrive on field as this will relive some of the work load that a bigger bodied forward will assume the responsibilities of.
This in turn will ease some pressure on his body and hopefully will be able to string some games together for us.
When he was younger his confidence wasn’t where it should have been but now with this new position I hope he has grown and will elevate him to the player we all hoped he would become.

I agree with a lot of this, but not sure what it's got to do with leadership.

Agree, struggle to see how Duigs gets a regular game this year, based on 2012 anyway when he struggled for form and fell out of our best 22.

But, guys like Prenda, Wiggo and Fish have been in our past leadership groups and often it is about their example off the field that gets them into these positions. Duigs is a great citizen and I'm sure MM has picked up on this point more than anything.

Malthouse appointed Nick Maxwell captain of Collingwood so it's no surprise to see the likes of Duigan in the leadership group.
