Won't even bother guessing as to a whole 22, but we should feel confident of this grouping and then along with whoever performs best for MM's wishes and needs.
Laidler Jamison ..............
Yarran Henderson...........
Gibbs McLean Simpson
Walker Waite ................
Betts ........... ..............
Kreuzer Judd Murphy
Carrazzo Robinson
That makes for only 15 of the 22 and as much as I'd love to automatically drop in Garlett, Scotland, Tuohy, Bell and several others, I really think that there's still a lot to work through before we can confidently announce anything closely resembling the best starting side.
We know that Malthouse has a particular liking for Watson and Lucas, but they'll still need to tick off several boxes before getting approval from Mick.
I also have just a feeling that MM is really going to like O'Keeffe.
Bricks and Mortar: that's one way I like to look at your building block formula...then backfill....and that's because there's a salary cap and we can't have superstars in every position but we can have them on each line as you;ve shown.
Carrazzo is ahead of McLean, whichener way you spin in...lets not debate it, except to say that Carrazzo was a given before McLean took another gasp. Carrazzo came back from a long time our and still looked better than McLean imo. But I get the drift of your post. I like it.
Bricks and Mortar.
Interesting to me is that I don't think there's a team in the comp that wouldn't have Garlett in their 1st 22, and I think they would also believe they could improve him, even Ratten.
I would like you to consider 16/22 with Garlett in.
I can't see MM dropping Scotland if Scotland can keep the same form of his last 5 years, and he is our 2012 B & F, so there's 17/22...
there's an argument to make that Tuohy Casboult even Watson.......Hammer , Warnock...would fill those positions easily and I reckon Duigan will make amends and return to his 2011 form. Arizona might be what he needs.
It is all about the coach and the players' fitness, because imo there is 25-30 players next year who could play a role for MM, I mean CFC, towin us a flag. I did last year too...but we lost games because we didn't defend the other way. Isn't that what MM is renowned for?
Re. Garlett: One of my favourite players that had distractions this year and may have just been a tradable commodity.
So glad we didn't cave to the offers made for him, but with talk of us having interest in Reimers, it may suggest that we may just consider for some small goal-kicking back-up.
Tuohy: Did get confused with his role this year as he found it a little difficult to curb his attacking prowess even when asked to just defend.
He'll need to put the blinkers on and follow MM's explicit wants or he may just find himself moved out of the team. Still think he'll eventually find himself forward of centre.
Casboult/Mitchell/Rowe: Only one spot to fill from these three guys. Best dressed gets the job.
Hammer/Warnock...and even Kreuzer: It may just take some juggling to get the best of all worlds here. I doubt even Mick knows just which way to go just yet.
Armfield should just about be an automatic inclusion now. Close but no cigar just yet.
Scotland: He'll most likely be there but another year older, will miss some early games and who can really say for sure after that?
Curnow & Bell: Just depends on their pre-season now.
I agree with your numbers of 25-30 players vying strongly for first 22 spots and I'd venture to say it could go to about 35 players having good reason to put their hand up for a spot.
We have players McCarthy, O'Keeffe & Bootsma ready to step up and still have the likes of Ellard, Duigan, McInnes, Joseph and White all having reasons to stake their claims.
We also have picks #11 and at least #36 that may just be thereabouts also.
Early days and who knows what will pan out over the course of the next few months but if nothing else, we know that MM wants players to play specific roles so it's just a matter of the fit now.
EDIT: Reckon that MM wants Lucas as a starting player. Gibbs is project no. 1 with Lucas not far behind.
