Judd?

fact cimm - deal with facts, please.

Fair call. I dont really think of players as hires, but at his best, Judd was the best. Anyone else?

Nup.

So yeah, Pratty talked about only hiring the best, but no-one could possibly suggest he actually did it. Unless you think Swann is better than Cooke. Hughes is better than Wells/Hine. Ratts is better than premiership coaches.

Maybe one day though.

Nobody else.

Just thought he deserved a mention.

Justin Cordy came with a good CV but I'm not sure he's a world beater.

It can be hard to get the best because they often don't want to leave.

Who's the best coach in the comp? Scott, Lyon, Clarkson?

I'm a Lyon fan (sorry Bg) because he made (and almost won) two GFs with a side that had no right to be there. But I don't think he was in anyone's thoughts last year when we were baulking at giving Ratts a contract .

If our philosophy is to be " get the best" and we've decided that say Roos is the best then maybe we should be in a holding pattern if he is fact avail in 2014.

But that's presents a whole basket of new problems.

It's complicated.

Why can't this !@#$%& club do things properly for a change???

umm... Ratten was untried.

Matthew Primus, James Hird, Michael Voss, Scott Watters, Brendan McCarthy.

What's your point? It's easy to put up names on both sides of the arguement.

A dozen posts back you were pumping up Brenton Sanderson coming in and achieving immediately.
Then you're bagging the idea of an untried coach....

I have 30 years of membership behind me. I have attended 12 grand finals and seen us win seven. I go every week. It's fair to say the Blues have been a huge part of my life, but if Malthouse replaces Ratten, I will fair dinkum chuck it in.

You have to admit MadBlue, it is going to be tough. This is Malthouse we are talking about. The enemy ! Since he entered the footy scene as player.

Openly laughed at us a few times over the years.

Almost got the job done for Collingwood on grandfinal day. The guy has been a smug pr1k for years and now he wants us to forgive him, give him 5 mil and let him hang out at Carlton until he retires.

It is going to be hard to take for many.

My sunset years are a long. long way away, Synbad and, as it happens, I have twins who can make up their own minds about what they want to do.
And yes, MadBlue, that IS my attitude, and I don't give a stuff about you

I know I'm maybe not in the majority, but I seriously couldn't care less about any individual in any of this.

Malthouse isn't collingwood, and he wasn't richmond or West Coast or footscray. He's malthouse. He's either the best option for us right now, or he isn't.

Parkin was hawthorn, barassi was melbourne. The jumper is everything.

Seriously, put Milne in a carlton jumper and we'd love him. if eddie was carlton we'd love him. sheedy. hird. We'd love them all.

Let's be honest here... when Jack was on top of his game, we effen loved him, and he was a repulsive, arrogant, slug of a man. But he was OURS.

People can do what they like. But I'd rather an ex-collingwood/west coach/footscray coach who knows what he's doing, than an ex-carlton player who doesn't.

Seeing Malthouse in a carlton top won't pain me. Seeing carlton putting second-tier talents in top jobs, and seeing us seemingly doomed to mid-table status, does.

Like Billy Hughes once said I have been a member of every political party except for the Country Party - he said even he had to draw the line somewhere.

Surely Barrassi was the enemy before he became a Blue

Parkin was the enemy before he saw the light & joined us

What about Judd?

As a player, coach or general employee your allegiance must be to the club who pays you. Once there's a new paymaster allegiances change -as they must.

We are in an era of professional sport - the days of suburban based rivalries is almost behind us. Young supporters couldn't give a rats ar$e about 1970's & 80's rivalries - it's before they were born. They want to see their team succeed & their club to recruit the best.

Young supporters are told of Carl vs Coll rivalry - but they've never lived it as the 2 clubs have barely been successful at the same time for the last 15 years.

I've been envious regarding all the good coaches that haven't coached Carlton to a premiership and you must admit that Malthouse is a sharp individual. It's some players that I wouldn't want at the club, no matter how good they are. I see the 'culture' as coming more from the players than the coach.

I don't care how people choose to support their club. I've got plenty of interests outside of AFL and it's really the only sport that I give a crap about. However, apart from a experiencing a massive case of culture shock that's not directly linked to football alone (Wayne Carey at the Blues, puke!), I don't understand the idea that tough love is too big a price to pay. A kick in the guts is better than years of mediocrity, metaphorically speaking.

You're right, I'm fairly convinced it's going to be a mess.

Because I have zero faith in the people in the boardroom at Carlton, and I'm pretty sure they'll stuff this up.

But when you think that everything needs to be done better, where the hell do you start? I'm pretty sure the board isn't actively seeking to replace itself with a stronger, more functional group.

Sticks and the board and Swann created a mess. Appointing a very inexperienced coach and surrounding him with very inexperienced assistants during his formative years, then hurridly trying to fix it... Ratten was almost set up to fail, or at least not achieve his best. Totally the fault of the people who put him there. They ****ed up, royally.

Will any of them take responsibility though? Or just sheepishly look devastated as they get rid of the coach they set up to fail?

As much as I think Ratten doesn't have the goods, the club doomed him from the start IMO.
