I was initially deluded and thought we had the talent but when I analysed it more closely clearly we don't.

Look at this list of regular/semi regular players and tell me if any of these players wold get a REGULAR game in a top 8 side:
Mclean, Joseph, Ellard, Armfield, Garlett, Jamo, Diugan, Hampson, Warnock, Kreuzer, Touhy, Collins, Lucas, Bower, Russell, Thornton
None of these guys would get a regular game at Eagles, Pies, Swans, Crows

Note I am not including first and second year players e.g.. Bootsma, Watson, Mitchell, McCarthy, Dale, Casboult etc....

The facts are that we have minimal depth and whilst we have a few A-list players we fall away very quickly.

Our player development over the past 5 yrs has been deplorable and hence we are in the position we are faced wit now

And we just missed the prelims last year with pretty much the same list.

Ratten must be a genius!

Gee one hears shite.
This is the same side that last year played with great enthusiam, behind their coach and missed a prlim by 3pts after being smashed by injury

What's changed talent-wise? After a few decent years coaching Ratten's lost the plot and with it probably his job. If he coached for the side and not his job he might've done a bit better. Board hasn't helped having that peessure on him.

thats all getting back to your first line.....

He was never a good coach.

Whats changed???

Footballers bodies and playing technique

Whats not changed???

Rattens coaching to adapt to the trends.

Look im sure if he stays next year he will be bulking them all up whe everyone else will be doing something else.

Face it .. he isnt the trendsetter.. hes a Xerox machine

Forever chasing what everyone else is doing...

Ratten has taken the club from poor to good in four years with a good strike rate.
Is he the man to take the playing group from good to great? He has nine games to prove it. Barker must take some responsibility with that unacceptable non functioning forward line.

Talent wise we probably have one of the better lists in AFL if everyone is up and going playing a good brand of footy and in good form.

Nine weeks to prove it.

He's taken this club from poor to shithouse. If you can call the past 2 months good, you are deluded .....................or born in 2002.

Missing finals only once since his tenure from wooden spooner is a fair effort. If you dont see it that way, then possibly a trip to your local circus where you can fit in.

Quite funny people using the finals as a measure of success for Ratts, yet in another thread Malthouse isn't good enough as he's only won 1 GF from 3 at Collingwood.

Grand Finals vs 1 Finals win.

your last sentence as well as average depth - not a talent issue. silly to say that guys like kreuzer, garlett, jamison, lucas, warnock etc dont have talent. most the guys you listed almost got us into the top 4 less than 12 months ago. clearly its development.

Really .... 4 wins in 1999. Check your historical facts.

2000 - 7 wins
2001 - 11 wins
2002 - GF
2003 - GF

GF means at least 2 wins in finals, if I remember he won interstate too.

We are expecting the growth to come from with in

Ratts words after the trade and draft periods last year

It was simple get waite fit and the forward line would fire Betts Garlett Walker all got 150 last year add another 30 or 40 from Waite and 20 odd fro Hampson and we would be unstopable

Get Jamo fit and he Hendo Yarren Duigan Laidler would be a super back line

Get Curnow fit and he can provide what we need to help Judd

Add to that Russell getting back to his best and Bower is benching 140kg and flying

So we come out of the trade period with a mature sged forward who really hadnt shown anything at the Swans and not exactly tearing up SA
We draft a very skinny son of a gun who is years away and a skinny long kicking kid who will good in 3 or 4 years

Didnt do anything to address out lack of in and under extractors
Didnt do anything to address that bloody big hole left by Fev 4 years ago

Didnt even think what would happen if we got hit by injuries of players lacked form

The gap between the good on our list and the developing is miles to wide and there is nothing in the middle

ah, that old chestnut.

malthouse didnt takeover a list with 3 no. 1s, a no.2, a no. 6, a no. 9 & chris judd. he started from ground zero and by his 4th year had his very ordinary list playing in consecutive grand finals. ratten has burned 5 @#$%&! years and won us 1 @#$%&! final. can you see the problem SCARPS???

It's not only about talent as everyone on an AFL list has talent, it's identifying players strengths and focusing on them and then getting the best out of them.

Players that know what to do and work hard for each other.

We are playing as individuals, and have no clue what to do or where to run.

Teams that win finals work hard, and are not normally ones that have superstar players.

We have all the top draft picks in the world but this means nothing, as we are crushing their natural flair.

Circumstances are different.

Malthouse walked in a club with Buckley, Licuria, Burns, Tarrant, Crosisca, Brown, Shauble, Rocca brothers, Mal Michael, Shane Watson and Butheras already on the list. He walked into a club with a spine.

Other than Fevola, Stevens, Russell, Waite & Murphy..there was really no one else.

And if I see the opposition run through our press into their open forward 50 and kick more goals with zero pressure as they do every game since essendung, I will write more drivel on TC sayting Ratts has no clue.
