Brett Ratten: OK, before we get started on selection I would like to welcome little 12 year old Timmy who won a Junior Supporters competition and instead of taking the prize of attending the rest of games for the 2012 season decided he would like to sit in on this meeting.

Gavin Brown: Hello Timmy, who is your favourite player?

Little Timmy: Kane Lucas

Paul Williams: Why Kane Lucas?

Little Timmy: Because he is fast and dodges well...

Brett Ratten: Well Timmy I am afraid that we are omitting Kane this week.

Little Timmy: What does omitting mean?

John Barker: It means he will not be playing for us this week.

Little Timmy: Why not?

John Barker: Well it is hard to explain but he is not making the most of his time on the ground with us...

Little Timmy: But doesn’t Kane kick plenty of goals for a midfielder, can play plenty of positions on the field and a good kick?

Alan Richardson: Yes he does but his other responsibilities as a midfielder are falling short.

Little Timmy: So why don’t you play him as the Sub? Or are we playing Yarran there again? That worked well last time..

Brett Ratten: Sorry Timmy but Kane Lucas will not playing this week.

************ sound of crying **********

Brett Ratten: Ah don’t cry Timmy, Kane Lucas will get back into the team soon.

Mark Riley: Great, we made the kid cry.

Little Timmy: It’s OK.

Brett Ratten: OK, as well as Lucas going out I am also omitting Andy Collins. Hendo and Waite will also miss with injury.

Paul Williams: Who are we bringing in?

Brett Ratten: Yarran and Matthew Watson.

Little Timmy: WHAT, NO DYLAN BUCKLEY???????

Brett Ratten: No, Bucks will play for the Northern Blues this week.

Little Timmy: So you are seriously selecting someone like Joseph instead of Buckley?

Brett Ratten: I think you are a bit young to understand the complexity of player selection Timmy.

Little Timmy: I might be young but it is not hard to work out that Buckley, a young top draft pick who is currently in good form and injury free has a far greater upside to Joseph, a bloke with clearly limited skills who can only cut it when avoiding the back 50 or kicking it at all costs. If he didn't take his shirt off so often, you'd hardly notice him.

Brett Ratten: Well Timmy……………..

Little Timmy: I’M NOT FINISHED!!!!

Brett Ratten: Oh sorry…. Go ahead

Little Timmy: You dropped Collins which is fair enough but why don’t you bring in Dale as another midfield rotation?

John Barker: I’ve got this one……. you see Little Timmy, we don't believe we've got enough midfielders who can play a role and run with one of their star midfielders...

Little Timmy: What so the thought never occurred to you to play someone capable of getting their own ball and gain an advantage?

John Barker: No

Brett Ratten: Well Timmy……………..

Little Timmy: I’M NOT FINISHED!!!!

Brett Ratten: Oh sorry…. Go ahead

Little Timmy: Why the hell do you persist with playing Gibbs in defence, stop treating him like a child and put him in the middle...

Chris Judd: But I play in the middle.

Little Timmy: Who are you?

Chris Judd: I am Chris Judd, environmental ambassador and captain of the Blues...

Little Timmy: Sorry Juddy, but it’s been so long since you did anything remotely inspirational on the footy field that I forgot you existed.

Chris Judd: I don’t like your tone little boy and I strongly suggest you learn some respect.

Little Timmy: And I strongly suggest that you stop calling for the ball from wide positions and that you kick the ball more than 20 metres and stop handballing into open space to the advantage of the opposition from a blind spot. Just do something positive for once. If it was me, I'd rest you this week and set our midfield up around McLean. What have we got to lose?

Brett Ratten: OK Little Timmy I think that will be enough for now....

Little Timmy: OK but before I go I would just like to say I am 12 and I don’t understand what you are doing and I fear you do not either.

That's good.

But your material is better. Has Ratts made an entry in his diary this week?

The only thing that is scary is if we get outcoached and out strategised by the Port Adelaide Coaching panel.

What's scary is that people actually think Dale and/or Buckley can come in to an AFL midfield rotation and keyboard warriors are suggesting Brett Ratten doesn't know football and Chris Judd is past it. All complete bullshit from people who don't understand football. i.e - most of the ferals on BigFooty.

Agree. I don't find these threads funny. Carlton supporters are very Richmond like. I sit in the Gold premium seats at home games and he abuse hurled at our own players is just incredible.

The abuse hurled last week at Jeff Garlett was absolutely atrocious by some "I am Carlton" scarf wearing peanut in N14.

Ouch.

Didn't realise you were the only one allowed to question Judd. My portrayal of Ratts is purely disengaged from my thoughts on him as a coach. Assuming you're questioning Buckley or Dale's match fitness/physical development that would hinder them from joining a midfield rotation, I would think getting them through as a sub gradually over time, probably doesn't detract from our current midfield rotation any more or less than playing guys like Joseph who do pure negating roles and have no interest in finding the ball themselves...

Thanks just the same

1. Don't think I've ever questioned Chris Judd's footballing ability.
2. Every player has a role. You shouldn't care if a player doesn't get the footy.
3. As good as Bootsma has been - he's receiving a lot of on-field coaching from the likes of Heath Scotland. I'm not convinced we can carry another kid who needs that direction on-field, nor is ready for the rigors of AFL football.

Nor have I. His current form I'd raise an eyebrow at. You have however gone against the grain and questioned his leadership and role in how ordinary the midfield set up is.

I do when we seem to have a lot more role players in the 22 each week than most sides. In the past month its highlighted, not only when these players haven't performed these tasks, but too much energy is spent in trying to hide these players. If Joseph gets 5 kicks and so does his opponent, fantastic. Problem is - if his opponent has a night out - where do you play him? Not a forward, can't play on a small forward, doesn't win his own ball or use it well enough when he does.

Stuck either keeping him there, or concede ground by subbing him off early ala St Kilda game. Curnow is a bit the same sometimes.

Play them as the sub. Discounting the possibility of an early injury, we're talking 20-30 minutes game time.

When you post something to the internet - whether it's yours or not - it implies (at least to me) that you agree with it. I've questioned Chris Judd in his capacity as midfield strategist...surely it wasn't that difficult to understand?

What is stupid is that you think everyone is tarred with the same brush yet you have no idea of the reasoning behind comments. That can be the problem with forums such as this, every thing seems to be black and white dependant upon your outlook.

I thought this and the other Rhino thread (a day in the life of BR) were fairly light hearted piss takes.

I didn't find them disrespectful and certainly not in the same category as some of the abuse you hear at games.

Keep going for laughs Rhino.!

"All complete bullshit from people who don't understand football"

I think everyone on the site has some understanding of football. What annoys me is people having a go at others for having an opinion. They are generally the ones that make insulting comments with no facts to back them up.

People get angry about criticism of Ratten yet seasoned coaches in Walls, Malthouse, Mathews and Roos make the same comments and its okay.

As for the topic. The Rhino wrote a satirical piece that was a fun read. Nice to see someone write something a bit different. I remember writing one a few years ago about pre season in a similar vain and it going in the HS. Yet people criticised it.

IMO take it for what it is people and move on.

PS The Rhino, I thought is was funny.

These guys haven't said Brett Ratten can't coach. I'm fine with criticism of Ratts - but to go as far as suggest he doesn't know anything about footy or isn't a good coach is pure folly.
