Its almost 3 weeks since that article appeared and still no news. We have almost half of our list coming out of contract this year yet only one re-signing so far-Robbo. Anyone heard anything?

What's the hurry? Would rather wait until end of season. Plenty of time for contracts to get done. Hopefully Macca feels the same.

There's only a couple of those who the club would probably want to move early on, the rest can wait until season's end.

Looking like a massive off season for the recruiting staff. We will have to accept that some of our 'deadwood' players will go on to other clubs and probably play well. But by crickey, we need a good freshen up as far as the current playing list is concerned.

Just on the GWS boys, it should be noted that no one left the gold coast side last year. Pretty safe assumption that the same would apply to the GWS mob this year.

Gold coast on the other hand, may be a little riper for the picking.

Be mindful that too much trading from other clubs creates more 'dead wood' as a byproduct. How long can they keep fooling us into thinking they are 'required' players? :?

If we don't make top four I predict 8-10 changes to the list. We may trade dead wood for deadwood..but new deadwood at least has potential to be a player in a new environment than stale deadwood.

Yep, it then comes back to the coaching staff to get the most out of the new 'deadwood'. Players like Kerr may end up at another club doing reasonably well. The old change of environment scenario.

The big question we are asking at the moment is how conducive is our current environment for getting the best out of our players?

Club loyalty not much of a factor these days? Tell me, how many superstars have actually left their club when they could be getting double the money at gc or Gws? From the top 20-30 players in the league, Ablett is the only one. You think murphy wouldn't be getting well over a mil if he went to Gws?

It's not just loyalty to your club, but staying in a familiar place where you are settled and happy, playing with your mates that many have played with since they were 18, staying close to family etc.

Spot on jake.

Money is rarely an issue and if you're in a winning environment, its even less so.

Geelong managed to keep its list together over 5 years of winning. Mumford is really the one they lost due to money.

But apart from Ablett, Scully, Davis, Ward, Brown and Bock, what else have the Romans done.

I think we do reasonably OK... Laidler would be a good example and possibly Henda too,

Those guys fell into our lap, I just feel we don't have the capacity to polish the rough diamonds at the moment. Whatever the reason may be.

Yes, but I was talking about the list cloggers that you have to recruit just to make up the numbers. That's what has been happening, fourth round draft picks and rookies having to do imitations of second and third round selections because we have over-traded the latter.

It is no wonder that our list looks a bit lopsided. No one does like-for-like (In terms of degree of worth) trades anymore. We may as well keep what we have and only go for free agents and kids.

JR, Scotland and T-Bird are the only ones on that list eligible for Free Agency and GWS can only take 1 uncontracted player
Kreuzer, Gibbs, Yarran and Warnock are the priorities.

In what way did Laidler fall into our lap?

We identified him 2 years previous and tried to recruit him the year before. Hardly fell into our lap.

Moreso in the context of him already having the capacity to fit straight into the team not so much how he was acquired.

Well, he was from a team that was hard to get into and that was having salary cap pressure put on them. Did we orchestrate that part?

Let's be honest - every time you see Jeremy Laidler play well you can thank Darren Milburn...

Laidler was such a gimme that few knew who he was - "we're trading for a rookie elevation?". People on here were moaning about how "we won't want to have wasted another mid-range pick" on him..maybe even one of the usual suspects in this thread
