Missed your analysis first time round BV - great read and excellent points about their tactical ethos and stoppage strategies. One point I would make however is that all forms of beating the zone involve beating them on the transition.

Quick movement of the ball leaves them unable to make it across to break up the play, i.e. stretching the defence as they move to match. A turnover leaves them stretched for obvious reasons, and finally drawing a few players out of the structure with a run into a dangerous area also has them in no-mans-land, which is the goal when trying to beat a zone defence.

That and smash them in the clearances and play the game in our half and have them worry about beating our zone.
Winning clearances and our press have been top notch in the first two games this year. If we continue that form we should take care of the magpies.

We shouldn't take them lightly though. They have their good moments . It could be a bit of a danger game for us.

Jamison & Duigan for Russell & Armfield... only if MC trust their fitness and not knee jerk selection(s)

FIGJAM has tweaked the Malthouse game plan and has the Pois playing more through the middle. Maybe they're still trying to come to terms with the new style but they do seem more vulnerable from what I've seen this year.

I recon we can exploit this and have a comfortable win Friday night... 27 points

How fast are their forwards?
Would we have Jamo Bower and Hendo down back or would that be too much?
Cloke, Dawes.... who is their third tall ? Paine?

'........And Laidler. My worry is when they break our press we will need speed to minimise the damage as they break forward. Loading up with tall not so quick defenders will give us an advantage in the air but the speed to get back and/or go with them on the occasions they get through will be lacking.

Need to get the mix right and not try to squeeze blokes in for the sake of it.

Based on likely teams/availability can anyone be bothered to do the ins and outs for both teams since last time we met?

Thought I'd have half a crack myself:

Us:

Out: Joseph, Duigan, Watson, Walker, Warnock, Twomey, Ellard
In: Waite, Jamison, Carazzo, Hampson, Lucas, Armfield, Touhy

assumes Jamison in, Russell out this week.

Filth:

Out: Davis, Tarrant, Wellingham(?), Krakouer, L Brown, Rounds, Johnson(?)
In: Beams, Dawes, Paine, Sinclair, Clarke, Seedsman, Shaw

Johnson and/or Wellingham may both play.

Fair to say we are much stronger, they are considerably weaker. Amazing number of changes to two top 4 teams.

I wouldn't bring both Jamison and Duigan in - probably only make one change Jamison for Russell - and only if Jamison is 100% ready to go.

Its our fitness and speed that allows us to run over teams in the second half - I wouldnt be exchanging Duigan for Armfield at this stage.

Yeah, not sure about Armfield

Russell is definitely on the outer. We should of traded him to GWS for a decent 1st round pick. JR is unfortunately not in our best 18 anymore

great comparison :)

Well regardless, we put it up to them without our full forward / full back last time. Jamo should be back. I dont think the pies are looking this great at all. Losing Leigh Brown, Leon and Krakeour have been huge loses for the pies. Leigh Brown was their x factor. He could bang a couple goals and be pretty handy in the ruck. Now jolly has to do it all with dawes rucking as the alternative ruckman. Plus with buckley coaching, their game plan is a little bit off. If richmond kicked straight it would of been a lot closer.

Blues better win this, it will be the weakest collingwood team we have faced in last two years.

It will be the strongest Carlton team they have faced in the last 10 years.

If Jamo gets selected it will be the first time in 2 years that Jamo Kruez and Waite have been on the paddock together

Not sure why people still think GC and GWS were just handing out 1st round picks for any player unwanted by their club.

Would have been lucky to get a 3rd round pick from GWS for Russell. In fact, our best shot would have been if they'd taken him as an uncontracted player our compo pick may have been 3rd round.

I doubt they're desperate enough to play Wellingham. I believe he wasn't fit enough to play VFL last week so its a big gamble.
Wood is more of a chance. He has good VFL form and the Dawes experiment has fallen flat so far.

Us. In Jamo. Out JR
Them. In Wood and Maxwell. Out Tarrant, Paine?

Beams is the little turd that always pops up against us and Swan is carrying too many cakes around his mid-riff.

Thats hilarious - Malthouse deliberately had them going wide because the didnt have the skill nor strength to compete with Geelong who were far better ball users - I dont see how their skills have suddenly improved under Buckley to now enable them a more direct route at goal. to make matters worse for them Tarrant being out leaves them exposed on the the left (our attacking right) when trying to make a quick break out of defense. Harry O and Shaw are their right side options whilst Tarrant was the left for short kickouts and play ons.

Good luck to buckley but he never achieved the success as a player that recuiting coup was supposed to bring - cant wait to see him fail spectacularly as a coach.

The Malthouse vs. Buckley factor will be interesting this year. Whereas Mick was good at unifying a team (with reaching the 2002/03 Grand Finals with crap lists being prime examples), Buckley has always been seen as an individual who sees himself above others. My impression is that he's more likely to be a divisive figure; contrary to that required of a coach.

The key to success for recent Collingwood teams has been their devotion to team disciplines, but I don't see quite the same level of commitment to that ethos at the moment.

Maybe it's a slow build-up for a long season, but Buckley doesn't strike me as an inspirational leader. Even when Buckley was captain of their two losing Grand Final sides, it was Malthouse who dominated the leadership of the side.

Thought it was interesting hearing Buckley say on Pendelbury only signing a short contract last year something along the lines of:

"He wanted to use the year to prove he was the best player at our club"

Not the thing for the coach to be saying in my opinion, and possibly revealing of the way Buckley always viewed his own footy....?

I tip us to win by 25.

We have looked more impressive in the first 2 rounds, and they don't seem their fanatical pressurising selves of 2010 and most of last year.

If we don't win, whether fair or not, the blowtorch will be on Ratts.
