Good on you cimm,
hope you all have a blast in Melbourne.

You could sing the club song an awful lot of times on the flight home.

Does anyone actually think midfielders like Pendlebury & Murphy get a designated opponent for the duration of the game? :?

They definitely get a matchup at stoppages, but from there that traditional stuff breaks down as players are taught to read and react so that they can get into best position to help make a play for their team.

Anything else is a waste of their likely output over the game.

I see we are now Round 1 Richmond and they are Round 1 us... From media perspective. Ok, we have to be able to handle the pressure that improvement and higher expectations bring. Bring it on!

The keys for us: Concentration, attacking and defensive intensity, good disposal (esp goal kicking) across all lines for four quarters.... = Carlton win.

1. Mids: They currently don't have any taggers in the team. Perhaps they bring in Johnson and wellingham to try keep Judd and Murphy in check... On our side, we use our greater midfield depth to keep the pressure on the whole time. Put carrazzo and/or Robinson on pendlebury.

2. Ruck: Use Kruezer and Hampson to run Jolly ragged. We should win this battle comfortably, given Kruezer's work rate. Important that Hampson continues to work hard.

3. Defense: Jamo/Hendo/Bower man up tightly on Cloke/Dawes with others dropping back to help out. Cloke is strong but we know, like us and Fev, where they're going to kick it most of the time. Gibbs and Yarran to run it out and distribute, and also to pop up in the forward line to kick the occasional goal. They will probably try a defensive forward on one of them... Doubt that can hold both of them and we should use the one they do tag to create the set up we want. If Gibbs goes forward (see below), use Bower/laidler to run it out.

4. Forwards: Kick long to hammer, hit Waite/betts on a lead and kick over the top to Jeffa/betts. Defensive forward on shaw (Remember they swung Gibbs forward last qtr against bris ) I would have Gibbs on Shaw, Robinson on Harry, stop his annoying gallops out of the backline!

We will learn a lot more about where we are at and where the Pies are at....

Good thing my miniature souvenir Carlton footy has the words on it. The kids can practice on the flight over.

Now is the best opportunity Carlton have had in a long time to draw a line in the sand and stake their claim.

Collingwood are yet to hit top gear, so why not take the chocolates away from them while they're struggling a bit?

This will be a tough game. Carlton DO have what it takes this year. Let's hope the players understand what's required. Lapses of concentration will be our biggest enemy.

Where are everyone sitting for this game? I got tickets in M5, near the cheersquad i think.
Our best chance in years to beat them, fine day and about 26 deg forecast so no excuses. The extra 2 days break hopefully will help too.

I agree Eddie - our best chance in a long time to beat this filthy lot.

I just hope the players are as fired up for this one as I am.

Finals aside, this is the biggest game we have played in many years.

Tarrant out and Maxwell in, guess that's a win-win for us then.

Winning games like this one also go a long wait to cementing top four or even top two.

I'd bring in Jamo. If he's recovered fully from his back injury put him in at the expense of JR.

Only inaccurate kicking at goal can stop us winnning this. This will come down to being mentally up to actually taking the win when it is offered.

I think we'll do it.

Blues by 16pts.

I'm tipping Russell and Armfield to go. And Jamison and Duigan to come back in.

Bower to stay in the side as a reward for good form.
Gibbs to move up the ground and play midfield/forward.

Is there a rule of thumb or guide as to which end will be Carlton cheersquad end each round?

Apparently the home side cheers squad sits at the Punt road end. Somone told me that yesterday.

Pretty sure Collingwood always sit in the Ponsford stand so i'd say it's a safe bet we'll be at punt rd end.

Missed your analysis first time round BV - great read and excellent points about their tactical ethos and stoppage strategies. One point I would make however is that all forms of beating the zone involve beating them on the transition.

Quick movement of the ball leaves them unable to make it across to break up the play, i.e. stretching the defence as they move to match. A turnover leaves them stretched for obvious reasons, and finally drawing a few players out of the structure with a run into a dangerous area also has them in no-mans-land, which is the goal when trying to beat a zone defence.

The ferals are definitely worried. They are already preparing excuses relating to new game plans and blooding of youngsters.

The home side sits at the Punt road end as this is close to the Lindsay Hassett room, which the social club (captains club) of the home team has use of. I'm 99% sure when it's Collingwood's home game they will be at the punt road end.
