Good side. McLean in new role could go to Martin.

Curnow seemed to cover a fair bit of ground and was in everything today. Will be tough call to leave him out for Brock who was also moving well.

Will be interesting also if they do play a forward line like the one you suggest and if they play Walker further up the ground and include him in the rotations. Your suggested forward line has Tbird playing in a position that last season was used to rotate Judd, Murphy, Gibbs and Robo through.

I look forward to watching it all unfold.

I agree with your last comment club, one position in the forwardline was for a resting midfielder. I can't see that changing for this season unless they do rotate Walker through there more often.

I like the look of:

FB: Tuohy Jamison Laidler
HB: Yarran Henderson Lucas
CC: Gibbs Curnow Murphy
HF: Betts Rowe Simpson
FF: Walker Waite Garlett

RR: Kreuzer McLean Judd

Int: Hampson Carrazzo Scotland Robinson

I'm not concerned with nominating the sub, as I firmly believe if the club are serious about a rotation policy, that they will use the sub as part of that and give players 2/3rds of a game off.

That side looks good on paper, but if Rowe doesn't show form then he's out and I'd be looking for one of Thornton, Bower or Duigan to come in as we re-jig our structure (the respective moves are Thornton up forward, Bower to defence with Henderson forward and Duigan to defence with Lucas & Tuohy into a more attacking roles for those playing at home).

B Duigan Jamison Tuohy
HB Laidler Henderson Yarran
C Robinson Simpson Scotland
HF Garlett Waite Gibbs
F Walker Kreuzer Betts

Rucks Hampson Judd
Rover Murphy
Interchange Thornton Carrazzo Lucas
Substitute Curnow

My depth aspect after that is limited to players like Armfield, Joseph, Ellard, Russell, Warnock, Collins and McLean. Paul Bower? Enjoy the red jumper and Matthew Watson? Develop opponent awareness if you are destined to be a defender.

Me thinks Rexy that you and I are on the same wavelength. Thornton versus Collins only!

Could be Curnow or McLean. Form will dictate. I got the impression the coaches were trying him as a run with mid for players like Boyd, Swan, Hayes, Bartel etc.

Guys such as Collins, Touhy, Russell, Ellard, Rowe, Davies, Armfield, wiill also be in the mix.

Assuming Warnock won't be ready. Also may review after I see Rowe through the pre-season. Can't pick him until I see him.

Jim who would you see Rowe coming in for assuming he were to be selected?

Duigan - Jamo - Laidler
Yarran - Hendo - Touhy
Simpson - McLean - Lucas
Walker - Waite - Gibbs
Betts - Hampson - Garlett

Kreuzer - Murphy - Judd

Robinson, Carrazzo, Thornton, Scotland (sub depends on match-ups and conditions).

Not sure yet? It could be AJ with Touhy going back there or it could simply be for Touhy. Slot Rowe into the key position, leave Thornton at CHF, move Waite to Walker's spot with the latter in the midfield. Waite and Walker would rotate midfield and half forward.

For now though that's just thinking out loud.

Jim, Last year we rotated Judd, Murphy, Gibbs and Robo through the HFF line and got great results from it. We also got good results from playing Walker deep forward as a KPP (of sorts). Playing Tbird, Rowe, Waite and K/Hampson in the forward line at once would be a massive change. I think its too much of a departure from the things that work well for us. That being the fast forward line and the press.
I think such a tall marking forward line would compromise our defence and doubt the coaches would go for it.

Still a month to go to Round 1, so anything can happen, but at this stage I'll predict -

Tuohy Jamo Laidler
Yarran Hendo Scotland
Simmo Judd Lucas
Carrots Waite Garlett
Betts Hammer Tex

Kreuzer Gibbs Murphy

Inter: Robbo, T-Bird, AJ/Armfield/JR, Brock/Curnow/Ellard.

* I'm assuming at this stage that Jamo, Waite & Tuohy will be ready for Round 1 but that Warnock & Duigan will not. We're going to have a very tough time replacing Jamo & Waite in our structure if they aren't available...
* If Waite doesn't come up, then Tex or T-Bird will have to play CHF and Collins comes in to play FP or off the bench;
* If Jamo doesn't come up....I think we're in trouble. Like it or not, the next best key defensive options are Bower & T-Bird (White is just not up to it, IMO, and it's too soon for Watson & McCarthy). I'd like to keep T-Bird as part of our forward rotation, so it becomes really important that Bower runs into some form over the next few weeks;
* I think there's at least half a dozen players (AJ, Armfield, JR, Brock, Curnow, Ellard + Collins + Bower) fighting it out for the last 2 spots in the side (3 spots if Tuohy's groin injury is more serious than appeared). Bootsma and Davies are longer shots, but could be in the mix too. The performance of our 'lower tier' types is going to be vital to our top 4 chances in 2012, so I was mildly disappointed that none of the players from this group had games on Sunday that demanded "pick me"...It'll be interesting to monitor the form/fitness of these players over the next few weeks;
* I can't see Rowe or Levi getting a game while Kreuzer & Hammer stay on the park.

We are playing Walker more in the midfield this year as the coach said. We know Waite is as much a midfielder, running HF as much as key position. That the beauty of his versatility. Not a bad thing to add to those rotations. Contested marking is back in vogue, not that it really ever left.

On the other hand, you have a good point and having Waite play KP forward for the reasons above really adds to the mobility of our forward line. Makes it so much easier to rest the ruckman in the FP without losing anything regards to pace and mobility or contested marking.

So, putting all that together, your point might well be better than mine, especially as it's tough to rest the ruckmen on the bench these days. I may have to concede to that one.

Thanks Jim. I was curious since I was having a real problem seeing where Rowe would fit. I was thinking that T-bird may be the unlucky one, Waite goes to CHF and Rowe to FF. I don't think we would generally want to increase the number of talls and we have to accommodate 2 rucks. I would be reluctant to drop Thornton though as I think his marking/kicking and experience is very valuable. Mmmmmm - a difficult one alright.
