Having your second and third round games already locked in regardless of your first round result made it even more pointless.

In previous years there was at least some incentive to try and remain in the competition to avoid playing at some 3rd rate venue on the other side of the country.

Nice to finally see the team in action again, although the intensity was a fair way off, particularly in the Port Adelaide game

Pros:
The big boys. Hammer and Kreuzer both really impressed. I liked Casboult as well. Presented well. Can't see us playing more than one of the Hammer/Kreuzer/Casboult/Rowe types in our forward line at any one time. Ball rebounds out way too quickly.
Murphy, Yarran, Garlett and Hendo showed that they are wonderful players.
Liked what I saw from Lucas and Collins and McLean.
Also liked little cameos from Dale, Carter and Buckley. Even enjoyed seeing McCarthy run around, despite his kicking into the man on the mark. He looks to be super, super athletic.

Cons:
Despite the pre-season buzz, Gibbs was a little disappointing in midfield.
I love JR, but he looked really, really rusty today. Not a terrific sign that he's ready to regain 2010 form.
Army's not a great kick, but he seemed to turn it over every time he got it. Presumably we're experimenting, but I hope we're not entertaining playing him as a defensive sweeper at stoppages (as he seemed to today). You want your class users of the ball with it in space.
Some of the bad defensive turnovers/decisions. Gave away a number of really cheap goals. Could very easily have won both games without this and the intervention of umpiring (that you often get at interstate venues). Watson did some pretty stupid things today.
Bootsma looked overawed (unlike a couple of the other youngsters).
Dwayne Russell.

We seem to to be a bit schizophrenic at the moment. Toughened up on the training track but miles behind in terms of match readiness. The last month or so we seemed to have slackened off after a really heavy start, it's no wonder we didn't play too well. How does it all prepare us for the season proper? :?

Wow. Did you happen to take a look at the team sheets for the games ? How can you make any judgement on our performance given the players missing ? Just a chance to see some of the young guys is all, and there were very promising signs from some of them.

We were still the favourites. It does seem to follow our low pressure approach to the intra club match. I still think they are doing things differently this pre-season. Or would you prefer it if I just had a go at Bower instead? :?

Pretty much.

I don't think anyone in the match committee had any real intention of putting us in contention for the win either.

I was pretty interested to see which of the younger/newer brigade wanted to put their hands up for it & I think it was a decent first up hit out.

If we are still playing like that in 4 weeks time I will not be impressed though...

Main thing i wanted out of yesterday was a hit out for the boys and no injuries.... the result didnt matter

I will be more interested in watch the boys play Bulldogs this week in a proper game format

We normally finish games off well so these silly 30 minute total games dont suit us... we will have a better idea of how we are going this Sunday Vs Bulldogs

Great to see the young kids strut their stuff.

Great to see the big men in form.

I hope Bower & Armfield get more chances on the preseason to make their case, because I don't think either of them had a great day.

I thought Collins & McClean made positive statements.

You always like to see the kids do well, but that's not what you want to take away from these matches.

The important thing was that we had Hampson & Lucas showing that they are ready to take up bigger roles this year.
Buckley, Bootsma and Dale being best on ground wouldn't have pleased Ratten as much as seeing the above named boys doing what they'd been showing all pre-season.

Happy with McLean and Curnow also and a little bit of confidence and support may just go a long way with McLean.
Whether we like it or not, he's still the best at our club at working with the ruck-men and getting first use of the ball.

The only thing that pisses me off is that talking vagina on the 9am SEN show feeling it's in everyone's interests to hear him say "they'd already polished the premiership cup and they can't even win a game against port adelaide... don't tell me they weren't trying to win"...

Someone deserves a falcon punch.

It's really my fault though for tuning in at the wrong time.

We have a couple of real ball butcherers in this side and it should be in team rules that they are not to be delivering the ball in the back half as evidence yesterday showed they haven't improved

I know the FTA guys aren't fantastic but thank God we have only a few games where we are forced to listen to Der-wayne.

Halfway through the Port game I just muted the TV, put the sound back on at the start of the Crows game then very quickly flicked the mute button again.

Tried SEN but that was no better... "great name Buckley" - I then expected to hear about his premiership-laden father but had to put up with "he'll do well to follow his [premiership-free Filth-coaching] namesake" :garthp:

Have said it for years....Paul Bower = Bambi.....dear in head lights.

Really has no idea, crap myself every time he has the ball.

Should have kept Carlos and got rid of Bower, at least you were entertained and were guaranteed 100% commitment.

The Setanta we passed on to draft Rowe?

Bower's decision making isn't as bad as Setanta's.

Love how everyone gets their knives out after a practice match.

The same Rowe who has yet to even play a game for us?

Weak argument.

Half strength at best.
Half committed at best.

Good to see some new players running around.

I did not understand a thing they were saying on SEN.

They kept on rattling on, so the ball was in one place and the other, without me knowing what happened.

So Poor........

I did notice the Buckley thing. The Carlton Buckley was a more famous name than the scummy one.

Observations ...

Bower continues to enhance his reputation as a very bad decision maker.
Hampson is going to be an improver now he can actually see the ball.
Henderson will play CHB all year unless injured.
McLean played well ... hope he gets more game time over the NAB cup.
Lucas ... big Tick.
