Huge respect to North if so.

North had the machines at Etihad at one stage, Not sure if they still have them.

Really surprises me on North's part. This is a club, fighting to survive, and looking to get within a bull's roar of even calling themselves financially-stable.

Good on them for doing so, but one would think a club as desperate as the Roos would have looked into it.

North had the machines at Etihad at one stage, Not sure if they still have them.

They claims their conscience is the reason they don't have pokies, yet they want Norf supporters to bet online with Roobet.

Quote:
“We are extremely happy to enter this exciting three year agreement with Betezy, the owner and operator of roobet.com.au. It has created a significant commercial outcome for the club and will provide a place for all our fans to go when they want to place a sports or racing bet,” said Club Chief Executive Eugene Arocca.

Betezy Managing Director Vince McDonald said, “It is a win-win situation with club supporters and members receiving the best prices available in Australia. The Club will benefit through each clients turnover whether they win or lose.”

Norf would have pokies if they had the dosh to purchase the machines.

I Love Pokies, all upside for me. I've never played the things and have absolutely no interest in them at all. BUT!! Via taxes and club ownership I indirectly derive benefits from them. I pay nothing but I get benefits!! Aside from the apparent rampant societal degradation that they cause and the criminal underclass that seems to emerge seeking to cover for losses, I'd have one on every street corner. As they say, a fool and his $$$!!!!

Whilst remaining concerned re the proposed gambling reforms, it was pleasing today to see Demetriou directly slap down Clubs Australia and the feral and deceitful mainstream media for wrongly attaching the AFL to their anti-reform campaign and indirectly slap down Fat Ed for his moronic comments.
Hopefully the AFL on behalf of the clubs can come to an arrangement with the Govt which sees united support for pokie reform.

Loved this snippet in the HUN article: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/more-n ... 6146100911

Quote:
Senator Xenophon took special aim at Pies president Eddie McGuire who spoke on Friday about his concerns that clubs would be hit hard by changes.

He said Mr McGuire wrote in the Herald Sun last year that smart cards for all betting could reduce problem gambling.

"How can you go from wanting to help problem gamblers to have more control over how much they can lose, to now allowing them to continue to lose $1500 or more per hour without any safeguards?" he said.

Anti-pokies campaigner Tim Costello has also slammed Mr McGuire and said the AFL should support the policy that would help problem gamblers

Supercilious, egotistical flog is McGuire

The increase in income from TV rights more than makes up for any reduction in pokie revenues.

No one is saying not to have pokies - just to set reasonable limits on the bets of those that might otherwise gamble everything away.

But that isn't good enough of course for the money hungry.

I hope so too. But I think you need to read between the lines on this one.

It is clear as daylight that the AFL is implacably opposed to the gambling reforms and are working their hardest in the background to scuttle them. But unlike the NRL, Demetriou is just not dumb enough to have the AFL name linked to a public campaign against reforms intend to protect problem gamblers.

He is not upset because the NRL and Clubs Australia are very publicly opposing the reforms. He is upset because the NRL are trashing their brand in the process, and he doesn't want Clubs Australia and the media involving the AFL in that if he can achieve the same result lobbying in the background and doing shady backroom deals.

Richard Goyder says AFL needs to tackle pokies issue that sees problem gamblers losing money
Tom Minear, Herald Sun

AFL supremo Richard Goyder says there is a “real problem” with AFL clubs profiting off problem gamblers who put their money into poker machines.

The league chairman, who has said he “hates” pokies, told the National Press Club that the “custodians of the game” needed to tackle the reliance of clubs on pokies, as well as the league’s close relationships with betting companies.

It'd end up a balls up.

Five AFL clubs awarded new 20-year licenses to operate pokies

Five Victorian AFL clubs are set to continue taking millions of dollars from pokies after the state government announced the recipients of new 20-year licenses for gaming machines, despite four rival Victorian clubs recently committing to sell their pokies.

Carlton, Hawthorn, Essendon*, Richmond and St Kilda have been handed 20 year licenses - beginning in 2022 and running to 2042 - to continue operating pokies at venues around Melbourne following an application process that began in October 2017.

So do I so I never play them.
What's the issue?
I worked in a casino for a few years and the entire time I was there I never saw one single person being dragged in to the gaming rooms. I did see several employees suggesting to punters they get a payout while they were well in front, however and I also saw several instances and was involved in some of them where punters were invited to leave the premises because their judgement appeared impaired by the demon drink.
There exists a mechanism whereby people who believe they have an issue may request a ban on entry to gambling premises. The security staff are then furnished with their photos and they are not allowed to enter, even if they want to. They have to request the ban be overturned.

I don't see anybody trying to close down racetracks because there are inveterate gamblers on course. Nor do I see any calls to ban TABs even though we know there are people who spend all day and half the night sitting at the bar drinking and betting and getting less and less able to think rationally as the time passes.

When we all stop benefitting from the taxes the government raises from the licences and profits we can put our hands on our hearts and say we are without stain.
