Great news re-signing Hampson. It gives us options (especially if injuries occur).

BUT - can we play Warnock, Kruezer and Hampson all in the one side? Bummers tried it and it didnt work. Not sure if it will for us either.

But still great news signing him up...

I just dug up an email a stupid Richmond supporter colleague sent me during the year after I potted him about Shaun Grigg... It reads:

"You can smile some more watching Shaun Hampson running around in yellow and black next year."

I held back on my response until today.

I think there's an opportunity here, but depends on if we go trading for a KPF.

Warnock has shown he is number one ruck, and Kreuzer invaluable in the middle as a Ruck/Rover combination.

Hampson has huge hands, and if he can work on clunking grabs with his 201cm frame, he could rip teams apart.

Still, if I had the pick of the up and coming forwards (Butcher aside), I'd take Tyrone Vickery. I have a feeling he is going to be awesome.

I agree - Tyrone Vickery will be a beauty!

And yes it will be interesting to see if the Blues still target a KPF. If they do then I cant see us playing them, plus Hammer plus a resting Kruezer up forward.

Ofcourse we can. Hampson - FF, Kruezer - CHF & Robbie - Ruck
They just need to learn to play forward.

If you play Hammer forward ... then we would have Hammer, Waite, Walker, Betts, Garlett and another tall forward (to be recruited). Too many tall forwards? ... Does that mean Setanta is on the outer .. gone?

Hampson for THREE more years is fantastic. It takes a bit of pressure off the need to recruit a young, raw ruck prospect this year. This means we can focus more on the essential inside mid and tall marking forward roles.

I feel the need to say though, that the "but can we play all three" posts are sounding a bit negative in a thread that should be more celebratory.
Perhaps these people could offer up a suggestion on HOW we can play all three instead of moping about in the land of IF.

It's immensely exciting that he has re-signed and indicates to me the direction he believes the club is heading. He could have quite easily gone for the moula at GWS.

Bring on #17!!

Consider that he is only 24 heading into the 2012 season, and you have reason to be excited for the next three years.

Alot of the the top sides are going with 3 talls forward. In our case it'd be Kreuzer, Waite and Thornton working with Walker/Gibbs, Betts and Garlett.

Hampson is purely a ruckman, and a very good one at that, who struggles as a forward Though. Drops too many and frustrates alot because of it. No good having him there when we have Kreuzer, who can catch them. Waite and Thornton are alot better prospects in the FF/CHF positions.

As for the other ruck position in the sdie, it's either Warnock or Hampson, not both.

Disagree. WCE rest their rucks in the forward line AND on the bench. We could have a three wat rotation going with Warnock and Hampson in the ruck, Hampson and kreuzer in the forward line and all of them on the bench at some stage. The key to a tall forward line is mobility. If you have tall fast forwards, they can mark over their shorter opponents or can still make a contest of it on the ground.

That mark reminded me of Kouta. Not the actual mark, but the way he tucked it under one arm on the way down and landed on his feet.

Take a few of those and you'll do me as a leading forward.

Turns 24 in March, has only played footy for 8 seasons - 5 of them with Carlton for a Total of 44 games so definitely still learning his craft. This year was going to be his breakout and he looked awesome until injured. Still plenty of upside with this guy and is at the right age rip it open in 2012.

The amigos always talk about his speed as well - Yarran reckons that Hammer is as fast as anyone at the club - I don't think that we have had the flexibility or confidence in Kreuzer and Warnock to be able to exploit Hammer's speed. Lets try to turn him into a 'Buddy' type of leading forward. (I'd take an 85% of Buddy)

Hopefully sometime in the next 3 years he learns how to use that huge frame of his, learns how to mark and learns how to kick.....
He hasn't sold me yet. After all he's only played two good games in his career...

You can't turn someone into even an 85% Buddy!!! Buddy is blessed with natural football talent and a lot of it.. Hampson is blessed with natural athletisism and no natural football talent.

For the sake of the club I really hope he makes it but he will never ever be even close to Buddy....

Congratulations to Hammer and the Club.

There was a piece of play I recall (think it was early in 2010 at Etihad - cant remember who against) where Kruezer took the ball out of the ruck (wing position) and handballed to a running Hampson who drove the ball deep into attack - it showcased both Kreuzer's ball getting ability and Hampson's awesome speed - it will be a great combination over the next few years. :smoking:
