bondiblue .. Where would you play Bower?

I haven't got it in for him ... I just think he is a bad decision maker ... and I rate other players ahead of him.

I hope Bower has a sensational year. I'd be over the moon. I just can't see a spot for him.

Nothing like stirring the pot!... :smoking: :smoking:

Possible Back Flankers: Yarran, Laidler, Duigan, Russell, Scotland, Davies, White, Thornton, Bower.

Initially I would pick Bower last in this lot. I admit ... Laidler and Duigan may not be what we hope ... but lets see.

I think other teams have worked out Bower. They know he will run no matter what ... and they keep catching him. I don't think his skills under pressure are good enough. Hopefully I am wrong.

Absolutely agree about Watson ... Carlton must persist ... if he makes a few mistakes so be it. In the long run it will pay off big time.

I really dig your posts BR but not this lot.

IMO you are attacking the man.

Laidler and Duigan are going to be fantastic. I'm a big Duigan fan.
These players you mention...."Yarran, Laidler, Duigan, Russell, Scotland, Davies, White, Thornton" ahead of Bower because Bower keeps on getting caught? Because other teams have worked him out? Mate, you're making things up.
We haven't worked out Bower, neither have you. So how the hell are the opposition going to work him out? He rarely gets caught...I know he looks like he is going to get caught....but he doesn't. That's the point!

I've sen 19yo Bower against Barry Hall and I've seen Thornton against Hall too. Bower was the winner TBird was ragdolled, and Bower was only 19yo.

I think you're over rating White. He is one lucky man to have inaccurate kicking against him create the image you are adopting. White can't do what Bower does; hasn't even shown glimpses of similar capability. Don't get me wrong I have nothing against White, but if you force us to compare...well I will...and so will many others.

Bower is a better mark and a more attacking marking, spoiling and running tall than all those you mention. Those you mention don't bring to the table what Bower vrings; yes those qualities you so easily have dismissed.

Give me examples of Bower getting caught. I mean dead set stopped in his tracks. Free against. Rare mate....surprisingly for all os us...it's rare! He is what you call uncanny or unconventional...spontaneous... Bower style...crazy horse Gary Cowton had some of Bower's traits, but in terms of a footballer from an early age Bower leaves Cowton for dead because Cowton only cane good after he hit 27yo.

Let go of your bias, and don't worry about looking for eg's of him getting caught...you may find 1 or 2...but in this game of AFL everybody gets caught...yes even JUDD...but those few times are negligible, it's normal...that's why you shouldn't be hanging Bower...just because he doesn't move like Motley or Bradley...if so, you're knocking style not results.

Just trying to help you out with the battle within BR.....I reckon it's a case of 'perception is reality' as is the case with all (but thnkfully not many) the Bower detractors ever since we got him on board.

Just remember Bower and Kennedy were interested targets for the WCE in the Judd trade, and we did not want to give up either....for good reason too. I'm spewing we lost JK, but on the flipside we at least held a very tall fast attacking HBF who we have thrown to the wolves in an attempt to patch up a role at CHB we have no one else to play there...that's not Bower's fault.

Oh yeah, have you see Russell and Bower compete against each other? I have...no competition: Bower eats him up. Perhaps that impresses you....I'm a huge Russell fan too.

bondiblue, you make some good points but you're getting a touch personal there.

FWIW, I think Bower has a much needed ability to take the opposition on and pressure them with his push forwards (something that Thornton has always lacked) but in saying that his inconsistency in finding a target and kicking to low percentage options can cause problems on the scoreboard for us following turnovers.
Bower is still young and has time on his side to improve his deficiencies and is easily still in my first 22.

Quotes on TC following the Fremantle Carlton match on Aug 28th.

Drewgirl:

Embarrasingly bad defensively last night.

Big Kahuna Boot:

..the problem i have him with [aside from those shocking handballs] is that when he goes for a run.. ..he doesn't actually look up to see if it's a viable option, he just runs.. ..and then half the time he has to double back..

Quotes on TC following the Geelong Carlton match on Aug 20th.

Juzzy:

Very disappointing since his return to be honest, easily out bodied and rarely contesting in forward 50. Last year was breaking even with Reiwoldt and beating buddy what happened?

Kouta:

Our strongest player in the bench press, but lacks the core strength to hold his ground against key forwards.

Injuries haven't helped.

Beat Cloke two years ago and ran off him, yet looked all at sea against him three weeks ago.

And from July:

DownUnderChick:

I'd be happy if he can learn to handball well that it reaches the player he is handballing too.

DoublebluMots2:

agreed.. he handpasses like he still in under 14's. hits the underside of the ball rather punching the end of the footy with power.

I guess I am not the only one that sees these thing.

As I said ... I hope he turns it on this year ... but I prefer Watson at CHB and Jamison at FB. With the number of other backmen I just can't see a spot for him.

We are a better and more flexible team with Bower in it than out. He will have the better of his opponent in 95% of the time particularly if he ends up on the 2nd best forward. He has had the better of Buddy a few times and that is no mean feat. Sure the bigger body like Cloke is a handful for him but he is not alone there.

Regards Cazzesman

Some have jumped off Bower way too quickly. If he has an ordinary season this year then fair enough but last year he had injuries and never really got going. Watch the Geel game from round 5? in 2010 and tell me this guy is not extremely valuable to our team. Even battling quad issues, he played a ripper.

In 2009, he was excellent and during the pre season I have seen glimpses of a great player. I admit that he needs to play on a flank and needs to create etc but at the moment no one else is putting their hand up to play chb so he gets the nod. Watson will take over but Bower is a better option at the minute.

Bower does his best work when he is the one taking the initiative to start an attack from defense. This year we have Yarran. Duigen, Ladiler etc to finish it = a lot of pressure of Bower this year.

Out of those opinions BR, only one agrees with you, the rest either say exactly what I said earlier, which is something he's been working on, and a few mention his poor handballing. Unfortunately, he's not alone there and slowly but surely they're all dropping that flick-pass hybrid that regularly falls short.

The other thing about Bower is that he looks like an alien out there. He is not a fluent, pure footballer. His hand balling is ok now it just looks awkward but it gets the job done.

On another note, I am getting worried about this first game. Their midfield is very impressive.

VS

Deledio Judd
Foley Murphy
Cotchin Gibbs
Martin Simpson
Tuck Carrazzo
Jackson Scotland
Grigg Robinson

Their forward line is much improved with Vickery showing solid form at ff, add Reiwoldt, Post (who was their best last week), Morton who always seems to kick a few against us and they are looking like a much better team than last year. You can even throw in Miller, who is nothing special but with a new club and a first game, anything can happen.

Their defense isn't great but we can't say our is either especially with Jamo missing. The have handy players floating around too. Beware, we should win but this is a different Tigers team then what we are used to.

Just out of interest

B.Lake 195cm
H. Taylor 193cm

M.Scarlett 192cm
C.Bolton 189cm

M.Scarlett 192cm
N.Bock 194cm

D.Glass 192cm
M.Egan 195cm

D.Glass 192cm
J.Bowden 188cm

So can we end this furphy that you need to be a giant to play in a key defensive post.

Go back further in time and there haven't been many champion FB, CHB, CHF, FF's who were more than 196cm anyway.

Bowden? :o

Harry Taylor is definitely taller than 193, but the rest are thereabouts. The thing about height is that generally reach follows. Out of those names I would say Taylor & Glass have long arms for their size.

Then you've got Scarlett, Lake & Bock who position themselves well and know how to stand their ground in a 1-on-1.

If you've got one or the other (reach or positioning) in your arsenal you're fine, but if you don't then the bigger and more athletic you are, the better. Patty McCarthy ticks those boxes and has long arms. If he works on his positioning he will be an absolute nightmare for opposition forward coaches. Watto is tall and positions well so he's another that could be a nightmare with his kicking.

Bower is haphazard with his positioning, is damaging in possession but has good reach. He's thereabouts but needs to get back to his '09 form and build on it.

Heights all came directly from the AFL Season Guide.

Yes Bowden was an All-Australian.

Perhaps we can let Bower get back to his 09 form rather than trying to predict his demise then.

Right now we need him at CHB.
Last year, albeit injured we needed him at CHB.
We've needed him there because TBird wasn't an option, and Bower has always been ahead of White.

Ideally we could play him at HBF, and imo those players you mentioned as alternatives to Bower at HBF, are not as good as him as HBF.
He brings much more than them to the table.
We have to break lines in modern footy and must take on the game and this kid does; he's Magpiesque like that.

The great thing about this kid is we can play him on talls in the BP or shoties, and we can easily play him on a wing.
If need be he can player forward too...doesn't mkatter what he looks like.

The kids knows how to beat opponents. That's his weapon.

In a nutshell, I'd play him in my first 18 for as many minutes the fitness staff allow; and he's a fit bugger.
That's his position in my team: First 18 named on a HBF or BP in a 7 man defense.

He's the best we have on our list imo for a defensive role; that's the point.
I'm not saying he's AA, just the best we've got, and I wouldn't pick Laidler, Duigan, Russell, or Thornton before Bower in defense, unless they could release him on a wing, and Yarran and Armfield are different defensive players...much smaller.

IMO our list is very strong, and Bower is a cog in that wheel. A wheel we've been building for around for 5 years now.
We shouldn't dismiss the attributes our athletic talls can and do give us.

How can you rake over something that is neither right nor wrong as yet??? It is just an opinion like anyone else's...in any case I reckon the drop off in Bowers form last season was the interrupted season he had with injury...no excuses this season so I would expect him to step up....

We're just discussing views. He has his opinion, I wanted to discuss it with him and ultimately I disagree. Now we wait and see whose opinion is right so we can come back here and belt the other over the head with it!

Wait a second...

Surely this means they intend to play him in Round 1.

That puts Vickery (about 200cm), Reiwoldt (195) and Miller (194?) up there. I see a plan. They believe we lack key backs (and I tend to agree especially without Jamo).

How are we going to defend this trio?

I hate it when a (Richmond) plan comes together.

I am not sure whether you are serious or not?

Well, the last Richmond plan I remember coming together was when they planned for Neil Balme to belt every Carlton player who wandered past in 1973. So,yeah, that part was a joke.

However, whilst I agree Miller is not very good and Vickery is totally unproven; I still am unsure who we will play on them if the Tiges play them forward all at once.

I think it guarantees Watson will play (on Vickery).

Getting really worried about our back line for this game.

Jamison out, Now possibly Bower.

We have to cover Riewoldt, Morton, Possibly Miller and Vickery, Post etc.

I reckon they will stack up the forward line.

Morton always kills us.

There is no way this will be an easy win for us.

We have had too many injuries to key players for my liking.
