Well we finished 8th last year and didn't beat a side above 12th after round 11. His prediction isn't completely baseless.

North ahead of us? Freo, and North, with their injuries.
Assume he has the Cats in the top 4, the team we had 9 extra shots on goal against yesterday until we decided to stop walking

North and Freo beat us last year, the cats finished 3rd.

North beat us because that sneaky forward pocket had a night out, pure and simple.
North are no good, I saw them play some laughable football last year
They rely too much on their ageing stars
And you've overlooked the fact they and Freo are crippled with injury
Mate if we're as bad as you think, then what do you think w shoudl do?
Sack the coach and trade judd, let's face it he won't be there when we wina flag?
By ypur rationale TheGame, we shpuld finish ahead of St.K, and didn't we beat Geelong in 2009 and 2010?

CARLTON

LAST YEAR: 8th THIS YEAR: 9th

WHAT'S BETTER: Carlton's rivals have been watching the Blues' pre-season program with interest, and all have remarked upon the greater attention being paid to defensive qualities, driven by new assistant coach Gavin Brown, fresh out of a club which in that regard knows no peer. There were considerable gains out of 2010 which, logically, should be improved upon further, the rise of Jordan Russell and Robbie Warnock, a new-look forward set-up in which not only goalsneaks like Eddie Betts and Jeff Garlett play big roles, but keys like Lachie Henderson, Jarrad Waite and a remade Andrew Walker can play bigger parts still. And Matthew Kreuzer's return from serious injury can't come quickly enough, the big man capable of playing in the ruck, forward, or as a dangerous on-baller.

WHAT'S WORSE: It's an old story, the reliance upon skipper Chris Judd, but it's one seemingly no closer to conclusion, the now dual Brownlow medallist winning the Blues' best and fairest each of the three years he's been there, with daylight second. As steady as they've been, it really is time for Marc Murphy and Bryce Gibbs to find a higher gear, because without it, Carlton simply still doesn't have enough armoury, and beyond that trio, perhaps not quite enough midfield silk.

WHO'LL HOG THE HEADLINES: Brett Ratten. Can't think of too many latter-day coaches who've worn as much flak as this bloke (and wrongly in my view) for coaching his team to two successive finals appearances. But there remains a significant push both outside and inside the club who believe the Blues should have climbed further than they have, and already enough signs over summer that the issue will continue to bubble. Winning a final appears to be the minimum mark Ratten will be allowed if he is to remain in the gig beyond this season.

Fantasty Football: Carlton

Don't be deceived, it's about the best 22.

Back to the article, he's essentially predicting that the top 8 will be the same names except us. We're the slider. Sure Rohan, that's a balanced view when you have Sydney, Geelong, Freo & Hawthorn in the mix.

I think we have the talent to finish top 4 but this year will be more competitive for a spot in the 8 so we can't afford any fadeouts this year.

It's not out of the realms of possiblity, especially if we get off to a very bad start and Ratten gets the sack.

You're right anything could happen
Duigan must freeze in the big time, Bower mightn't be able to hold the number two forward every second week, Yarran might get exposed for not being defensively minded enough, Gibbs might get out-run and out-toughened on-ball and have to go back to defense, Warnock might play more like he did in the Adelaide praccie game than he did in the last few games last year, Hammer might not come on as hoped, Waite might not take the next step up, and Tex might not quite make it as a forward
But reality is most of these question marks won't go so pear shaped
And let's face it, we have a really settled side coming together now, with depth all over the ground (something we haven't had for yonks), and a far more defensive mindset, though in saying that I am not sure we have mastered the press just yet, s=from my observations at pre season games
In saying that Geelong didn't kick the ton yesterday
I just think we are a lot tighter now defensively, and we have good variation up forward which is important because in today's game you need multiple avenues to goal to score against the press, football is becoming like soccer in that you need to pierece through zones and presses, and the likes of Betts, Yarran and Garlett are exceptional at this
Games will be lower scoring, tighter contests, with goals coming at a premium, rely on one goal kicker at your peril
Waite, Henderson, Garlett, Betts, Walker, any one of these could bag 3-4 goals on their day now
Question marks on pace of Laidler and Duigan, but countering that we finally have a defensive group coming together and with better kicks coming out of defense
Also the rucks are coming along just nicely
I reckon we are coming along nicely, but granted anything could happen and there are still question marks

The footy lift-out in the West Australian surveyed all their footy writers and "experts" and all 8 or 9 had us finishing 7thi - 9th. It seems to be the standard perception.

Let's prove them wrong

Hawthorn won a Grand Final then missed the 8.
Anything could happen.

The talkboxes on SEN are predicting the Dees to make a prelim

They need to fill newspaper space. Its not like he'll be betting on these predictions at the TAB - he just has to fill the middle page.

Let's worry about beating the Tigers and go from there.

I don't have an issue with it.

He's repeating many of my own fears. Particularly in relation to Judd, Murph and Gibbs.

Last year not one journo had us making the 8 most had us 10-12-
Although we faded to the end we should have finished at least 6th

so if he has us at 9 - Safe to say we will be comfortably in the 8

There's a little bit of herd mentality from journalists when it comes to both players and teams. Most seem to be expecting North to jump up. Not quite sure why. They played some good footy at times last year, and have nice young players. We played more good footy last year, and have better young players.

A lot were also talking up Melbourne, but I wonder if they're starting to have second thoughts, given their pre-season form. (Which would also apply to North Melbourne.)
