Tony De Bolfo's latest article on Carltonfc.com.au explores the story of the Curtis brothers, and Harry who went on to play over 100 games for the Pies:

http://www.carltonfc.com.au/news/newsar ... ault.aspx#

Blueseum version (with links to games, players, years etc):

http://www.blueseum.org/tiki-read_artic ... icleId=155

It begs the question;

Which other players were at the Blues but left to join other Clubs and became stars (or very good players) in the process?

From the Blueseum

Craig Davis went ok at the Pies.

The best AFL player ever from Sweden perhaps? I thought Kris Massie played some great footy for the Crows after being traded out. Chris Bond was serviceable after he left the Blues as was Troy Bond who ended up playing in a Premiership side with the Crows. Peter Rohde played some great footy at Melbourne after being released from the Blues. Russell Ohlsen and Ray Byrne spring to mind as more than handy footballers who made the dreadful error of crossing from Princes Park to Victoria Park, but both played excellent footy for the black and white.

Kris Massie is one who springs to mind. Never really found his niche at Carlton, but found his place and consistency at Adelaide.

Great minds, Doc. I started writing my post when there were no replies, and went off to make a coffee and then posted, only to find you'd gazumped me.

Brendan Fevola played a few for the Lions, while he was still running around.

Although Greg Williams technically did not play for us at the time we did knock him back and he ended up being pretty handy. Andrew Leoncelli spend some time at Carlton as well and I am not sure whether he made our list but he was a handy player at the Dees.

Good calls - and yes, Leoncelli was on our list having been drafted in the PSD.

Over 140 games with Melbourne.

Gordon Casey (from Speed) spent '67 & '68 with us for 1(?) senior game. Then went to Footascray. Played well over a 100 with the doggies and represented Victoria as well.

He played as a forward in our 2's, and considering the calibre of players ahead of him at the time it was a very hard side to ''crack''.
We didn't try him as a defender, which is where he made his name at the doggies.

I hope we're not adding Grigg to this list in a few years....

Nah...not unless there's a Carlton to Coburg thread...incidentally, the whole side nearly played at Coburg in 1953.

the obvious one is Greg Williams - but he did return

Jason Baldwin and Scott Russel played with Carlton U/16's squad in the mid to late 80's and played at Fitzroy and the Pies - Russell may have been the family moving to SA and possibly with Baldwin a change of boundaries??? I have a team photo in a CArlton year book showing them

Craig Davis became a very useful forward for Collingwood after we let him go on medical conditions

Ray Byrne was a good servant also for the Pies and Cats

Crosswell had a stellar career with teh Kangas including BOG in 1975 GF???

Peter Francis for Marchesani was a dumb swap

Aaron Hamill - not sure if this fits into thsi subject as he walked out on us (also Troy Bond, but Hicky was a great pick-up as a result of Bond leaving)

Other players who palyed a few games or none in some cases were:

Chris Bond
Kevin Dyson
Andrew Leoncelli
Richie Vandenberg
Daniel Hargraves
Peter Bradbury
PAul Dimattina
Andrew Lovett
Anthony McDonald
Denis Pagan
Gordon Casey
Peter Chisnall
Ken Greenwood

Pastor Doug Nicholls - trainers wouldnt rub him down because he was aboriginal - he left and went to the 'Roys (not the clubs proudest moment_)

Players who went OK at other clubs are their release

David Honybun
Tim Fleming
Danny Noonan
Gavin Exell
Peter Doyle

I read an article that was about an Essenon player we rejected - I cannot think of which one it was, but an Essendon* champion such as Hugh Mitchell, Clarke or possibly Hutchinson etc trained with the Blues and we rejecetd him. He lived inAscot Vale or Moonee Ponds and then made a career at with the Bombers and i think alsp played in the 1949 flag. He was a mad Horrie Clover fan growing up

Was Hamill really a "star" at St Kilda after he left us? Or was he a big name recruit being talked up about "onfield presence" while doing realistically very little to justify his enormous pay packet?

The latter. I think of the Hamill move to the Saints as a benefit now with hindsight, providing us salary cap relief, he did SFA at the saints.

I have to agree with this. Though he did far more with us than the Aints and probably helped free a few dollars up in our cap. If we could find another Hamill however, we would be doing fairly well. Lost a great deal of repect for him once he moved on. I know its all about business and money, but I'm certain he wasn't on a pensioners salary with us at the time. Greedy snot. :banghead:

Small point of order, Collingwoods Scott Russell is not the same one your talking about. The closest the Collingwood FC Scott Russell came to being a blue was he played for the Sturt Blues in SA but was a local. Not doubting there was a Scott Russell in the 16s but definately not the same.

James Cook had a servicable career after we let him go.
