Hard to argue with any of that although nobody was writting this stuff after we beat Gellong and the Saints with the same group of players.

Form and confidence is everything. When we we get it back these stories will dry up largley.

The lack of any other forward option is a concern

Our biggest issue, I feel, can be summed up by an exchange between two commentators talking about England and their soccer team in the mid-90s. It was used in the classic anthem "Three Lions".

"We are not creative enough and we're not positive enough"

Luke Ball v Brock McLean
Gysberts v McLean

Fevola to WCE not Kennedy.

Paul Chapman v Michael Mansfield

Choices made 10 plus years apart but pretty much the same disastrious choices.

As has been pointed out recently, the Blues have 14 top-20 draft picks on their list. Somehow, such richness of choice hasn’t resulted in a well-equipped team. This is, in fact, a list still in need of considerable rebuilding.

I would think most clubs would have at least that many "top 20" picks on their list.

I need to update this with last years draft.

First Round picks (2000-2009):

Melbourne 14

Essendon* 13
Western Bulldogs 13
Hawthorn 13

North Melbourne 12

Carlton 11
Richmond 11

Port Adelaide 10
Brisbane Lions 10
Collingwood 10
St Kilda 10

West Coast Eagles 9
Adelaide 9

Geelong 8

Fremantle 7

Sydney Swans 5

Top Draft picks are not always gold are they?.....but Kreuzer IMO is a gem of the highest quality.

The most consistent player in our last horrible month has been Kade Simpson.....Pick No: 45.

Last paragraph is 100% right, but talk regarding our list and comparison with goalscorers at Hawthorn and St Kilda makes no sense. I would like some more key position prospects on our list and a massive lift in intensity. We seem to be where the Dogs were in 2007 where the balance of contested footy is way out of whack. Rectify that and suddenly the defense looks good, we have midfield depth and our forward line looks unpredictable with many options. In saying that we are still no better than 5th or 6th when playing well. Natural improvement should give us a shot at top 4 eventually, but then it comes down to a lot of other factors (coaching, development, depth, leadership) to see if we can take it a step further.

We need to keep drafting well and getting well chosen rookies to fill specific roles.

There are several areas we must improve:

1) Intensity - it is difficult to evaluate game plans etc when we are not giving our all & I don't think anyone believes we are giving everything on the field. (This may be a reflection of Ratten's inability to communicate effectively but better on field leadership would demand effort, if nothing else, even if everything else is falling down around them)

2) Game plan / Strategies

3) Skills - I don't believe this is a static phenomena where you're either 'highly skilled or not". It can be worked on. I reckon several of our better players' skills have gone backwards. World class musicians practise 6hrs a day - called 'wood-shedding' ie.they lock themselves away in the woodshed for hours and just practise their skills... and they are ALREADY the world's best. If we don't keep working on our skills, they fall away!

4) 1%ers

5) Attitude - do we care enough? do we believe our own press? are our hairstyles more important than our gamestyle? Are we mentally equipped to climb the ladder of success and stay there like the cats, lions etc... have done?

I reckon the players we have are much more capable than their recent performances suggest. Not sure the answer is Chris Tarrant etc...
