Lance Whitnall made a career out of those same traits. But when he did it, he was a "smart player". :screwy:

Yeah, I've been wrapped for him to be a needed, valuable, consistent and appreciated player after enduring the previous years. I can't decide whether I'd have him or Scotland to kick for goal if my life depended on it.

Rucks should dominate....Hawks are on the way back and I expect it to be tight game, no Bower on Franklin leaves us exposed.

Gibbs v Hodge
Carrazzo v Mitchell..although I still expect Mitchell to get 20+ possies...
Armfield on Rioli

Henderson, Wiggins and Robbo are plodders if they are going to be the ins, although Waite is a big loss
we will really miss the mobility of Lucas even more IMHO. He has given us that extra runner you need in the modern game and
has proved Hughes selection policies correct.

Blues by 5 points in a physical encounter....expect Brown, Lewis, Sewell etc to go hard at our skilled mids....

Why would Wiggins replace Houla?

They play completely different roles.

i like gibbs on hodge.
carrazzo on mitchell.
could also be reversed.

agree that henderson comes in for waite & robinson as well.
like most others, i really like wiggins but i think there are plenty in line ahead of him, depending on fitness: mclean, hadley & grigg all ahead of him. probably anderson too. i would even be tempted to bring in hammer, if he's up and about to rotate off the bench. if none of these are available, i'd think about wiggins.

Thornton should sit on him all game and run run off, utiilising any / all of the available runners in the team who do it far better anyway.

In the few games i've seen live he zones to far off his man - likes to stay 15-20 metres in front of him and push back - Roughy is to clever for that and towels us up everytime we play them

I would prefer Jamo on Roughy because Buddy likes to push up the wing and I dont think Jamo is suited for that role he plays better deeper in defence

Thornton will be a liability this week if we dont get back and support him - particulary if White is out injured as well

Funny we have a plethora of 190cm plus defenders and none seem to be fit

Mclean Hadley and Grigg are all lead up forwards? That would be the only role to bring Wiggo in for - direct replacement for Waite - None of the three you have mentioned let alone Anderson FFS come close in terms of contested marking of marking ability in general and none of them have a heart like him.

First quarter will be very important methinks. Their confidence must be very fragile after the last 5 weeks, and such a poor showing last week. If we get off to a flyer their heads will drop.

Ironically, the last time we beat the Hawks, we did not have Fevola in the team!

But Waite did and he kicked 5 goals if I recall correctly.

Hoops - Hodge
AJ - Rioli
Jamo(?) - Buddy (would love Bower to be fit)
Mitchell - ?

I'm hopeless at this match up thing.

Play anywhere near our best and we win comfortably.

Army to Rioli.

I want to see if Rioli is as quick as they reckon he is, coz Army is blistering!

absolutely right mate
lets show rioli what pace is
how about Austin in instead of Anderson
and if we are looking for a tall super athlete - bring back the HAMMER!!! :D

well match ups aside we should beat these guys straight up
our midfeild should smash theirs
put too much pressure on for clean delivery into hawks forward line
jordan russel has amazed me this year he will solidify that backline
jamo on rough
white / bower / austin / hendo on franklin
aj on mitchell
carrots on hodge
army on rioli
robbo in for lucas
hendo in for waite
im a huge fan of the Hammer!
i reckon he could be a great powerful forward
his speed is amazing for a 200cm monster of a man
there is no way the hawks are gonna be able to stop:
Judd, Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Scotland
Murphys had hard tag this year - i reckon he is gonna tear round 8 apart!

Sorry MarkNo3, I wasn't suggesting that they come in as direct replacement for Waite.
I was looking at it from more holistic perspective. "These 3 are out. Now, how do we make our team the best it can be, given the players available?"

To be clear:
Out: Waite, Houlihan, Lucas

In:
- Henderson for Waite.
- McLean/Hadley to strengthen us in close (Hawks have Mitchell, Sewel, Borgoyne & Hodge all capable of premium work in close).
- Grigg/Robinson to provide run & grunt through the middle or forward - Grigg more half-back to half forward; Robinson more from the middle/forward, depending on where Ratts thinks we need them. And, of course, depending on injury.

None of these ins are direct replacements. Hendo is similar to Waite only in that they are both KP who can play forward or back. We don't have a direct replacement for Houlihan. Wiggins, for example, can take a good mark and has great attack on the ball. But he cannot shut down a gun rebounding half back, he is not a reliable shot for goal and his skills in general are nowhere near Houlihan's level. Hendo is a better option leading up, Setanta busts the packs, Kruez can float in and out, with the Band of Brothers running riot at ground level. The others I mentioned add more to strings to our bow and strengthen the team more than WIggins, IMO... if they are fit.

I don't particularly think Joey would be more useful than Wiggo, only if they want run out of the backline (although obviously Joey cannot kick like Lucas....)

A terrible week for us to have Bower, Walker and White out. Though having said that, I couldn't see White playing on Roughy or Buddy in any case. Ideally we'd have Jamo on Roughy and Bower/Walker on Buddy. I don't really want to see Thornton on either of them, he can play third man up. I'm guessing they will put Hendo down back, or maybe bring in Austin. Really, we don't have many choices. Could JR possibly play on Buddy? Probably not, and we'd be sacrificing too much run.

Ratts will earn his money this week.

assuming its waite, houlihan, lucas and white out, I'd think it would be henderson, robinson, wiggins and davies/kerr

For myself I'd love to see the changes being henderson, hampson, robinson and one of wiggins/davies/kerr coming in

kreuzer to play ruck rover+hampson/jacobs taking the main ruck duties. Hampson+kreuzer to continually drift forward. Henderson on franklin + jamo on roughhead

I watched the Port game again last night :smoking: FWIW White finished the game, he did get up a little sore in his shoulder in the same passage of play when Waite got reported. That was in the middle of the third quarter and White stayed on the ground and played the rest of the game out.
